Volume XVIII, Issue 19 From the Director’s Desk “Imagination is the beginning of creation. You can imagine what you desire, you will be what you imagine and at last you create what you will.” George Bernard Shaw This is a fine quote that fits so well for every one of us. We all are naturally creative and have an imagination that enables us in various areas of learning. Similarly, dear Highlanders, each one of you is creative and you use your imagination to create a unique piece of art, poem, message, story and a lot more. As you use your imagination, you are developing various skills. You should not worry about making a mistake. You must assemble your thoughts and ideas even if they are not perfect. ‘Keep Trying’ is an important mantra to follow. Time and focus play an essential part in any creative expression. Have a goal – a purpose and have a lot of enthusiasm to reach your goal I would like to share a story, I read in a magazine. The story inspires me whenever I set out to do something. The story of the elephant and the stick In a little town of Kerala, there was a temple elephant that was very much the local hero often revered and always loved. Every day the elephant would be taken out for a stroll through the busy bazaar streets. As it walked along, the elephant would do as it pleased. It would reach with its trunk for a bunch of bananas hanging in front of a store, and before the helpless shopkeeper could react, the bananas would be inside the elephant’s mouth. It would sway its trunk into another store, and bring down a lot of carefully arranged flowers,or it would grab a coconut from the woman selling coconuts on the road and Oct. - Nov. 2016 crunch it in its mouth like a walnut. The mahout would try and stop the elephant from doing all this, but to no avail. The elephant would do as it pleased. The mahout even tried beating the elephant with his stick, but the elephant wouldn’t listen. The bananas and the coconuts were just too tempting to resist. And then one day, the clever mahout had an idea. As the elephant was leaving the temple gates for his evening walk, the mahout held his stick out for the elephant to hold with his trunk. The elephant obediently took the mahout’s stick and curled his trunk around it. Now as it walked through the busy bazaar street, the elephant longingly eyed the bananas but since it had the stick in his trunk, it let the bananas alone. To grab the bananas but since it had the stick in the trunk, it would have to drop the stick and that would mean offending the mahout. So the elephant held on to the stick and walked through the street, without disturbing anyone in the shops, the shopkeepers were delighted. Their admiration for the elephant grew, and they often handed over gifts to the mahout for the elephant If you think about it, we are all a bit like the elephant. As, we go through our lives we get distracted, by the temptations around us. Even though our mahouts- our parents, our teachers – tell us not to get distracted, we continue doing it all the time. We spend time watching television, sleeping the extra hour and chatting non-stop. What we really need is that stick to hold. That stick is usually a goal- a purpose- that excites us and keeps us on track. Once you have a goal or a major definitive purpose in life, you suddenly find yourself focused on doing it. All it takes to achieve that goal is perseverance. Like the elephant’s trunk, our minds wander too. We need something to keep it focused and that is the stick of motivation and diligence. So, my dear Highlanders, keep this in mind and go ahead and enjoy your creative abilities and do everything with passion and commitment. Keep up the enthusiasm and enjoy what you do. Ms. Sudha Goyal School Director Keeping Children Warm and Safe in Winters Winters are around the corner and winter excitement is in the air. With winter comes the dread of colds, flu and sickness. Here are some tips to help our children stay healthy this winter. Washing Hands - We need to ensure that our children do not miss school because of our negligence. Teaching children to wash their hands well, and often, helps them to remain healthy, especially in winters when one tends to get a little lazy. This includes before and after meals, after coughing or sneezing, after using the restroom, in school and at home. They can also use alcohol-based wipes or gels when a water source is not readily available, or if it is too cold. Keeping Warm-Making sure that children are dressed appropriately for the colder weather will help them remain active and enjoy winters. Jackets, gloves, and hats are all important clothing pieces to protect against the elements and keep the body in shape. Eating Well- Balanced meals are a must in winters. Children need vitamins and minerals so that their bodies have the energy to stay healthy. Dry fruits and nuts have nutrients, essential fats and heat that our bodies need in winters. Children are delicate and dry fruits helps them to build a good immune system to brave winters. Sleeping and resting- Sleep is one of the most important things that children can do to give their body a leg up against sickness this winter. All children should get at least 7 hours of restful sleep each night and more if they are younger. Be Active- Children are full of energy, keeping them active and fit will enhance their immune system. Due to winters, it may not be possible to indulge in outdoor activities more often, however, devising indoor fun activities and making children a part of it, can keep their minds and bodies active. Quarantine- If children still get sick after taking precautions, ensuring that they are quarantined is important for their school mate and friends. Do not allow your children to return to school until they are 24-hours free of fever or vomiting. Wipe all surfaces with disinfectant, as well as wash clothing and bedding in hot, soapy water. Remember, fitness and health is a way of life, let not the winter months make them otherwise. Let us keep our children happy, healthy and winter safe. And as Pietro Aretino said, “Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius.” Ms. Seema Bhati Primary School Principal The Early Years student’s involvement in a surfeit of activities was indeed riveting and mesmerizing all through the months of October and November. The children of the Initial Chapter with full zeal and enthusiasm witnessed the Dussehra Celebrations in the school ground on 10th October, 2016 as well as the special assembly conducted by the students of Kindergarten. In our endeavour to make the little ones aware that the festival centers on victory of good over the evil, the children were encouraged to pen down/ draw one bad habit that they wish to give up which were all later stringed together and burnt with the effigy of Ravana. Striving to be open-minded and learning to respect and value the traditions of other cultures, significance of the festival- Halloween was brought forth through a discussion and showing a video clipping to the children in the classrooms. The students celebrated the festival of lights, ‘Diwali’ by coming dressed in traditional attire. The corridors all bright and colourful, decorated with rangoli and diyas painstakingly and enthusiastically decorated by the little ones under the guidance of their teachers lent a beautiful festive look to the Initial Chapter. Growing up to be global citizens, the young ones also pledged their allegiance towards a bright but a cracker free Diwali. On 15th November, 2016, students of Kindergarten conducted a special assembly on Gurpurab. They very beautifully conveyed the importance of the said festival and spread the message of peace and harmony as preached by Sri Guru Gobind Sing Ji. The children of the Initial Chapter, full of sportsman spirit, celebrated the Sports Day on 9th November, 2016. The young ones, full of zeal and enthusiasm, participated in the fun and the flat races held indoors beating the climatic conditions and making the event a grand success. Childhood is about innocence and playfulness. It is about joy and freedom. Children’s Day was marked with fun and frolic for the little ones on 11th November, 2016. Dressed in their party best, children were made to feel special by their teachers. While they were welcomed with a live music at the reception, fun and frolic through a theme and a dance party organized through the day, saw the young ones enjoy themselves to the fullest. Taking away a little handiwork made specially with a lot of love and care by their Home Room Tutors as a token of love, made the day extra special for all of them. The children of the Initial Chapter also witnessed a special assembly on the school’s Founder Day on 21st November, 2016. The assembly saw the young ones sharing the key aspects of the schoolsignificance of the school logo, the organizational hierarchy. It made the children more knowledgeable about their own school. The same also helped in developing appreciation for school, its ethos and inculcate a sense of pride and belonging in their alma mater. As part of the campaign ‘One Nation Reading Together’ on 25th 2 November, 2016, to inculcate an early reading habit in the little ones, the Initial Highlanders were seen engaged throughout the day in constructive reading activities along with their Home Room Tutors in their respective classrooms and the library. The activities aimed at developing an aptitude for learning new things and building a strong foundation for academic excellence, honing self-discipline, longer attention span and better memory retention. English Week celebrated from 21st to 25th Nov’16, saw the children of Early Years participating enthusiastically and honing their language skills. They were seen giving oral presentations on different topics, singing various rhymes and songs, playing word games, were engaged in picture reading and story reading sessions. The young learners of Nursery, growing up to be confident communicators, have been busy showcasing their journey of learning to their parents through the Front Desk Programme. Poised and reflective, through their presentation the children gave their parents an opportunity to have a glimpse and insight into their world of learning at Scottish High. Covering both academics and co-curricular areas of development, the young ones kept everyone engrossed and enthralled with their performance. The Pre-Nursery students continue with their exploration of self under the Transdisciplinary ThemeWho we are. Showcasing their understanding about one’s identity, the young ones were seen collecting and collating data of the number of boys and girls in the class through a bar graph. Growing up to be confident communicators, their enthusiastic participation during role play sessions, is indeed endearing. Meanwhile, with the unit where the children learnt about transportation systems and one’s need for the same, just culminating, the children are now going to spend new few weeks probing into the relationship between people and animals, the role animals play in people’s lives and our responsibility towards their well-being under the Transdisciplinary Theme- Sharing the planet. Initiating the unit by bringing in a pet dog in the classroom generated excitement and curiosity amongst the little ones about their new learning. The young scholars of Nursery are becoming more and more expressive day by day. Exploration of varied culture and traditions, inculcating and imbibing values through different stories under the Transdisciplinary ThemeHow we express ourselves, are ways through which the children are being encouraged to make connection with their learning and reflect through their action. The unit is also giving vent to their imagination and creative thinking, quite visible during the enactment sessions and story renditions. The young Highlanders have now just begun with their new unit of inquiry under the Transdisciplinary Theme- How the world works, wherein they will explore about the Earth’s natural cycles and its impact on the activity of living things. The Kindergarten students, as they move forward with their learning, the next unit is designed to help them probe and delve into types of physical spaces and how people may use it differently under the Transdisciplinary Theme -Where we are in place and time. Moreover, they will be encouraged to explore the facilities available in different areas and how people can make appropriate use of it. Little Sanvi Sengupta of grade Kindergarten–D brought laurels to the school by coming first in the Bhagwad Gita Chanting Competition organized by the Chinmaya Gurudham, held on 4th December, 2016. Ms. Rupa Chauhan Initial School Principal 3 PYP “Learning is their journey. Let them navigate. Push them to explore. Watch them discover. Encourage their questions. Allow them to struggle. Support their thinking. Let them fly.” - Anonymous True to this, the young Highlanders are paving their path of learning by questioning, discerning, coming to new understanding and later applying their learning through the action taken. The last few weeks saw the Pre-Nursery students exploring and delving deeply into the Transdisciplinary Theme- How we organize ourselves. The unit equipped them with the knowledge about the types of transport, decisions involved in using a particular transportation in reaching a destination and how the transport systems have changed over a period of time in sync with the needs of the society. The young learners were given opportunities to muse over the importance of fuel conservation thereby reiterating the global phenomena of ‘Go Green.’ Exploring the school parking area, observing the different types of transport, interacting with the guest speakers are examples of a few engagements which helped in developing deep conceptual understanding in the children. The young learners of Nursery on the other hand were engaged in the unit under the Transdisciplinary Theme- Where we are in place and time. The unit made them knowledgeable about different types of journeys and the opportunities that one might experience due to the same. While sharing and listening to each other’s personal travel experiences, the children learnt about the changes in the weather, language, food, attire and alike that they might encounter when on a journey to another place. Many brainstorming sessions, research tasks related to personal journeys which involved interviewing the school nannies, security guards and the parents made the little learners eager to make new discoveries. Kindergarten students got an opportunity to extend and enjoy their creativity through a variety of ways under the Transdisciplinary Theme-How we express ourselves. Probing into different types of images- static and moving, looking around in the immediate environment to make a note of different images and trying to interpret them and brought forth their perspective. The same was also evident when they explored creating images using different art techniques like sand art, shadow puppets; designing a logo and later sharing its meaning with others. Having a close interaction with the guest speaker- a Bharatnatyam expert, gave them an idea how facial expressions and hand movements can be used to communicate a meaning, as well. Grade 1 Students explored the Transdisciplinary Theme ‘How we express ourselves. Through this unit students got an insight into how people express themselves using various means. Exploring verbal and nonverbal ways of communication made them realize the importance of communication, its means and forms. Watching a video on sign language made them understand that verbal communication is not the only mean of communication. They wrote letters and even marked emails to their parents drawing a deeper understanding of the similarities and differences between the two. There was a lot of excitement and exhilaration as the students of Grade 2 delved into the Transdisciplinary Theme How we express ourselves andconsidered special events they celebrate. Measuring tools were also displayed and students were asked to understand their usage. Visit to Physics lab and observing the tools used in Math lab made them knowledgeable about various measuring tools and enhanced their observational skills. Trying out both standard and informal ways of measurements made them comprehend the importance of accuracy involved in measurement. Under the Transdisciplinary Theme- How the world works, students of Grade 4 developed an understanding on the different forms of natural materials. An insight into the unit helped them to understand the conditions that cause reversible and irreversible changes. A visit to 4 the Chemistry Lab further enhanced their research skills on the same. Students explored the school premises and observed various materials obtained from nature. They were quick to comprehend the sources of the natural materials using various strategies. They also understood the concept that the things obtained naturally can also undergo changes. Their critical thinking skills were enhanced when they put forth their understanding of the usage, impact and retrieval of any one natural material on the environment through SWOT and concept wheel strategies. Grade 5 Students scaffolded the Transdisciplinary Theme ‘Where we are in place and time’. They analyzed the characteristics of civilizations and societies and the connections between past and present. By understanding how various civilizations have changed down the ages they were able to make connections between the past and present civilizations. They had an insight of the location, culture and living style of the chosen civilization and excitedly presented their formative assessment enhancing their communication skills. Students also understood the processes involved in collecting, analyzing and validating evidence of these civilizations. Environmental Initiatives At SHIS we understand, appreciate and value our green gold (environment). It is important that this precious gift is nurtured, preserved and reserved for the next generation. Celebrations with burning of crackers hold a fascination for both young and old alike. Children being the largest consumers of crackers, need to be educated about its harmful effects to their health and environment. Taking up this cause students of grade 5 decided to organize an anti-cracker Campaign. They made slogans and during the dispersal made the parents aware that burning crackers will further pollute the air of NCR and will also add to the noise pollution. The children took initiative to educate the masses about the challenges that we might face if we do not focus on being environmentally conscious. Students encouraged everyone to light up our houses with traditional diyas as the diyas don’t just illuminate the home, but they also add an aesthetic value to this festival. The best part of using diyas instead of the lights is that they save electricity. Saving electricity is definitely an eco-friendly activity. They also explained why ‘Deep Daan’ is considered auspicious and is friendly to the environment. Lightening of diyas will also help thousands of potters in villages and towns to earn a livelihood. The Highlanders also promoted the Use of eco-friendly decorations such as flower garlands and duppattas to decorate the homes instead of using plastic decorative items and ecofriendly colours for Rangoli that are made of natural ingredients such as flowers petals, rice, turmeric, etc.. Ms. Pooja Sharma Clan Elder MacArthur The ultimate victory in competition is derived from the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your best and that you have gotten the most out of what you had to give. Howard Cosell There are two types of competition, one leading to poor sportsmanship, the other to inspire performance and ethical play. The word ‘Competition’ literally means ‘to strive with, not strive against. At all levels — and in all endeavors — competition is a double-edged sword. It brings out the best and the worst in spectators and participants alike. We teach our children win-lose contests almost from birth. We compete to get into college and we compete for jobs. Competitive spiritis simply a reflection of the way we’ve chosen to relate to one another. Competition can inspire us to perform better while teaching valuable lessons about teamwork, goal setting, and staying cool under pressure — without trapping us in drama, ego bruising, and poor sportsmanship. Competition can seem purely black and white: There’s one winner, one loser, one competitor left celebrating, one left disappointed. The months of October and November saw the students of clan Macarthur flying high in the right spirit of competition and attaining the goals they set for themselves. There were various Inter Clan competitions such as English Spell Bee, MFL competition, G.K. quiz, Economics Symposium to name a few, where most of our students proved their mettle once again. With the foggy mornings, the cold breeze and the dipped temperature we witness the start of the winter season. Yes a much awaited relief from the sweltering summer sun, but at the same time we all need to be fully prepared to enjoy the cold weather to the fullest. A few precautions mentioned below will help us have the pleasure of the season to the fullest as well as keep us and our children safe – Thick layers a must – keep yourself and your children warm by wearing sweaters and jackets. Make sure that the neck, head, hands and feet of the little ones are covered well. Beware, Scarves and hood strings can be risky for smaller children so use of other alternatives is suggested. Keep yourself hydrated – As the days get colder, we notice our skins getting dryer. As the air gets dryer, the body feels the effects not only externally, but internally as well because our systems tend to become dehydrated. When we are dehydrated, we tend to feel sluggish because the bodies’ ability to flush out the toxins decreases and our body systems slow down. When temperature drops and wind increases, the air becomes drier, meaning our bodies aren’t getting as much moisture as in warmer 10 months. Hence we should increase our water consumption. Exercise as much as you can – it’s the best season to exercise. In-case it’s too cold to step outside for a walk or a jog, simple indoor exercises should be done. Avoid munching sweets/snacks - it’s the time when your appetite for eating increases. We should avoid eating fried food or snacks or gulping in sweets. The best is to take more of fresh fruits and salads. In-case you are using a room heater or a car heater do not step outdoors immediately. Switch off the heaters, let your body be at the normal room temperature and then step out. So let’s all be a little more cautious and enjoy the winter season to the fullest Ms. Rupa Chauhan MR ISO Student Contributions SAFARI AT JIM CORBETT At the dawn of day, the animals far away Beckoned us at Jim Corbett, to visit their rich habitat. DIVVYESH - V-E 11 Don’t be Selfish – Fire In a small village, a little boy lived with his father and mother. He was the only son. The parents of the little boy were very depressed due to his bad temper. The boy used to get angry very soon and taunt others with his words. His bad temper made him use words that hurt others. He scolded kids, neighbours and even his friends due to anger. His friends and neighbours avoided him, and his parents were really worried about him. His mother and father advised him many times to control his anger and develop kindness. Unfortunately, all their attempts failed. Finally, the boy’s father came up with an idea. One day, his father gave him a huge bag of nails. He asked his son to hammer one nail to the fence every time he became angry and lost his temper. The little boy found it amusing and accepted the task. Every time he lost his temper, he ran to the fence and hammered a nail. His anger drove him to hammer nails on the fence 30 times on the first day! After the next few days, the number of nails hammered on the fence was reduced to half. The little boy found it very difficult to hammer the nails and decided to control his temper. Gradually, the number of nails hammered to the fence was reduced and the day arrived when no nail was hammered! The boy did not lose his temper at all that day. For the next several days, he did not lose his temper, and so did not hammer any nail. Now, his father told him to remove the nails each time the boy controlled his anger. Several days passed and the boy was able to pull out most of the nails from the fence. However, there remained a few nails that he could not pull out. The boy told his father about it. The father appreciated him and asked him pointing to a hole, “What do you see there?” The boy replied, “a hole in the fence!” He told the boy, “The nails were your bad temper and they were hammered on people. You can remove the nails but the holes in the fence will remain. The fence will never look the same. It has scars all over. Some nails cannot even be pulled out. You can stab a man with a knife, and say sorry later, but the wound will remain there forever. Your bad temper and angry words were like that! Words are more painful than physical abuse! Use words for good purposes. Use them to grow relationships. Use them to show the love and kindness in your heart!” Resourced by Monica Jajoo Printed & Published on behalf of the School Director, The Scottish High International School (An ISO 29990:10 Standard for Learning Services Management) (Promoted by Ruptech Educational India Ltd.) Anitya’s Golf Tip of the Month Pause and hit for better rhythm Leading golf professionals Your rhythm and tempo play a very important role in quality and consistency of your ball striking, especially in a tournament. Junior golfers tend to swing too long and hit the ball too hard when they play—both factors contributing to inconsistent ball striking. As compared to a professional golfer, their rhythm gets too quick in trying to hit the ball too hard and they end up miss-hitting shots. Remember that your transition should be smoother and not hurried. You must ensure when you start the downswing, the club is absolutely still and the first motion of the club is towards the ball. The difference between a good player and a great one is the quality of the transition the change in direction of the golf club from backswing to downswing—and gives best results when it is smooth and not hurried or jerky. The below drill gives you good rhythm and helps in stabilizing the club, both at the top of the back swing as well as through the ball. Take your back swing to the top and stay still for a couple of seconds. This extended pause at the top is important as you can only hold the body and the club in a stable position. If you are out of balance, you will not be able to hold your position very well and the club, as well as the body, will be moving all the time. Once you have achieved this balance, swing the club through to a full finish making sure that there is one continuous swing through the ball. This drill is great for stabilizing golf swings in junior golfers and improving the consistency of their ball striking.
