“Imagination is the beginning of creation. You
can imagine what you desire, you will be what
you imagine and at last you create what you
will.” George Bernard Shaw
This is a fine quote that fits so well for every
one of us. We all are naturally creative and
have an imagination that enables us in various
areas of learning.
Similarly, dear Highlanders, each one of you is creative and you use your
imagination to create a unique piece of art, poem, message, story and
a lot more. As you use your imagination, you are developing various
skills. You should not worry about making a mistake. You must assemble
your thoughts and ideas even if they are not perfect. ‘Keep Trying’ is an
important mantra to follow.
Time and focus play an essential part in any creative expression. Have a
goal – a purpose and have a lot of enthusiasm to reach your goal
I would like to share a story, I read in a magazine. The story inspires me
whenever I set out to do something.
The story of the elephant and the stick
In a little town of Kerala, there was a temple elephant that was very
much the local hero often revered and always loved.
Every day the elephant would be taken out for a stroll through the busy
bazaar streets. As it walked along, the elephant would do as it pleased.
It would reach with its trunk for a bunch of bananas hanging in front of
a store, and before the helpless shopkeeper could react, the bananas
would be inside the elephant’s mouth. It would sway its trunk into
another store, and bring down a lot of carefully arranged flowers,or it
would grab a coconut from the woman selling coconuts on the road and

crunch it in its mouth like a walnut. The mahout would try and stop the
elephant from doing all this, but to no avail. The elephant would do as it
pleased. The mahout even tried beating the elephant with his stick, but
the elephant wouldn’t listen. The bananas and the coconuts were just
too tempting to resist.
And then one day, the clever mahout had an idea. As the elephant was
leaving the temple gates for his evening walk, the mahout held his stick
out for the elephant to hold with his trunk. The elephant obediently
took the mahout’s stick and curled his trunk around it. Now as it walked
through the busy bazaar street, the elephant longingly eyed the bananas
but since it had the stick in his trunk, it let the bananas alone. To grab
the bananas but since it had the stick in the trunk, it would have to drop
the stick and that would mean offending the mahout. So the elephant
held on to the stick and walked through the street, without disturbing
anyone in the shops, the shopkeepers were delighted. Their admiration
for the elephant grew, and they often handed over gifts to the mahout
for the elephant
If you think about it, we are all a bit like the elephant. As, we go through
our lives we get distracted, by the temptations around us. Even though
our mahouts- our parents, our teachers – tell us not to get distracted,
we continue doing it all the time. We spend time watching television,
sleeping the extra hour and chatting non-stop. What we really need is
that stick to hold. That stick is usually a goal- a purpose- that excites us
and keeps us on track.
Once you have a goal or a major definitive purpose in life, you suddenly
find yourself focused on doing it. All it takes to achieve that goal is
perseverance. Like the elephant’s trunk, our minds wander too. We
need something to keep it focused and that is the stick of motivation
and diligence.
So, my dear Highlanders, keep this in mind and go ahead and enjoy your
creative abilities and do everything with passion and commitment.

Keeping Children Warm and Safe in Winters
Winters are around the corner and winter excitement is in the air. With
winter comes the dread of colds, flu and sickness. Here are some tips to
help our children stay healthy this winter.
Washing Hands - We need to ensure that our children do not miss school
because of our negligence. Teaching children to wash their hands well,
and often, helps them to remain healthy, especially in winters when
one tends to get a little lazy. This includes before and after meals, after
coughing or sneezing, after using the restroom, in school and at home.
They can also use alcohol-based wipes or gels when a water source is
not readily available, or if it is too cold.
Keeping Warm-Making sure that children are dressed appropriately
for the colder weather will help them remain active and enjoy winters.
Jackets, gloves, and hats are all important clothing pieces to protect
against the elements and keep the body in shape.
Eating Well- Balanced meals are a must in winters. Children need
vitamins and minerals so that their bodies have the energy to stay
healthy. Dry fruits and nuts have nutrients, essential fats and heat that
our bodies need in winters. Children are delicate and dry fruits helps
them to build a good immune system to brave winters.
Sleeping and resting- Sleep is one of the most important things that
children can do to give their body a leg up against sickness this winter.
All children should get at least 7 hours of restful sleep each night and
more if they are younger.
Be Active- Children are full of energy, keeping them active and fit will
enhance their immune system. Due to winters, it may not be possible
to indulge in outdoor activities more often, however, devising indoor
fun activities and making children a part of it, can keep their minds and
bodies active.
Quarantine- If children still get sick after taking precautions, ensuring
that they are quarantined is important for their school mate and friends.
Do not allow your children to return to school until they are 24-hours
free of fever or vomiting. Wipe all surfaces with disinfectant, as well as
wash clothing and bedding in hot, soapy water.
Remember, fitness and health is a way of life, let not the winter months
make them otherwise. Let us keep our children happy, healthy and
winter safe. And as Pietro Aretino said, “Let us love winter, for it is the
spring of genius.”

The Early Years student’s involvement in a surfeit of activities was indeed riveting and mesmerizing all through the months of October and
November.
The children of the Initial Chapter with full zeal and enthusiasm
witnessed the Dussehra Celebrations in the school ground on 10th
October, 2016 as well as the special assembly conducted by the
students of Kindergarten. In our endeavour to make the little ones
aware that the festival centers on victory of good over the evil, the
children were encouraged to pen down/ draw one bad habit that
they wish to give up which were all later stringed together and burnt
with the effigy of Ravana.
Striving to be open-minded and learning to respect and value the traditions of other cultures, significance
of the festival- Halloween was brought forth through a discussion and showing a video clipping to the
children in the classrooms.
The students celebrated the festival of lights, ‘Diwali’ by coming
dressed in traditional attire. The corridors all bright and colourful,
decorated with rangoli and diyas painstakingly and enthusiastically
decorated by the little ones under the guidance of their teachers
lent a beautiful festive look to the Initial Chapter. Growing up to be
global citizens, the young ones also pledged their allegiance towards a bright but a cracker free Diwali.
On 15th November, 2016, students of Kindergarten conducted a special assembly on Gurpurab. They
very beautifully conveyed the importance of the said festival and spread the message of peace and
harmony as preached by Sri Guru Gobind Sing Ji.
The children of the Initial Chapter, full of sportsman spirit, celebrated the Sports Day on 9th November,
2016. The young ones, full of zeal and enthusiasm, participated in the fun and the flat races held indoors
beating the climatic conditions and making the event a grand success.
Childhood is about innocence and playfulness.
It is about joy and freedom. Children’s Day was
marked with fun and frolic for the little ones on
11th November, 2016. Dressed in their party best,
children were made to feel special by their teachers.
While they were welcomed with a live music at the
reception, fun and frolic through a theme and a
dance party organized through the day, saw the
young ones enjoy themselves to the fullest. Taking
away a little
handiwork made specially with a lot of love and care by their Home Room Tutors as a token of love,
made the day extra special for all of them.
The children of the Initial Chapter also witnessed a special assembly on the school’s Founder Day
on 21st November, 2016. The assembly saw the young ones sharing the key aspects of the schoolsignificance of the school logo,
the organizational hierarchy.
It made the children more
knowledgeable about their own school. The same also helped in
developing appreciation for school, its ethos and inculcate a sense of
pride and belonging in their alma mater.
As part of the campaign ‘One Nation Reading Together’ on 25th

November, 2016, to inculcate an early reading
habit in the little ones, the Initial Highlanders
were seen engaged throughout the day in
constructive reading activities along with
their Home Room Tutors in their respective
classrooms and the library. The activities aimed
at developing an aptitude for learning new
things and building a strong foundation for academic excellence, honing self-discipline, longer attention span and better memory retention.
English Week celebrated from 21st to 25th Nov’16, saw the children of Early Years participating enthusiastically and honing their language
skills. They were seen giving oral presentations on different topics, singing various rhymes and songs, playing word games, were engaged in
picture reading and story reading sessions.
The young learners of Nursery, growing up to
be confident communicators, have been busy
showcasing their journey of learning to their
parents through the Front Desk Programme.
Poised and reflective, through their presentation
the children gave their parents an opportunity
to have a glimpse and insight into their world of
learning at Scottish High. Covering both academics
and co-curricular areas of development, the young
ones kept everyone engrossed and enthralled
with their performance.
The Pre-Nursery students continue with their
exploration of self under the Transdisciplinary ThemeWho we are. Showcasing their understanding about
one’s identity, the young ones were seen collecting and
collating data of the number of boys and girls in the
class through a bar graph. Growing up to be confident
communicators, their enthusiastic participation
during role play sessions, is indeed endearing.
Meanwhile, with the unit where the children learnt
about transportation systems and one’s need for the
same, just culminating, the children are now going to spend new few weeks probing into the relationship between people and animals,
the role animals play in people’s lives and our responsibility towards their well-being under the Transdisciplinary Theme- Sharing the
planet. Initiating the unit by bringing in a pet dog in the
classroom generated excitement and curiosity amongst
the little ones about their new learning.
The young scholars of Nursery are becoming more and
more expressive day by day. Exploration of varied culture
and traditions, inculcating and imbibing values through
different stories under the Transdisciplinary ThemeHow we express ourselves, are ways through which
the children are being encouraged to make connection
with their learning and reflect through their action. The
unit is also giving vent to their imagination and creative
thinking, quite visible during the enactment sessions and story renditions. The young Highlanders have now just begun with their new unit
of inquiry under the Transdisciplinary Theme- How the world works, wherein they will explore
about the Earth’s natural cycles and its impact on the activity of living things.
The Kindergarten students, as they move forward with their learning, the next unit is designed to
help them probe and delve into types of physical spaces and how people may use it differently
under the Transdisciplinary Theme -Where we are in place and time. Moreover, they will be
encouraged to explore the facilities available in different areas and how people can make
appropriate use of it.

True to this, the young Highlanders are paving their path of learning by questioning, discerning, coming to new understanding and later
applying their learning through the action taken.
The last few weeks saw the Pre-Nursery students exploring
and delving deeply into the Transdisciplinary Theme- How
we organize ourselves. The unit equipped them with the
knowledge about the types of transport, decisions involved
in using a particular transportation in reaching a destination
and how the transport systems have changed over a period of
time in sync with the needs of the society. The young learners
were given opportunities to muse over the importance of fuel
conservation thereby reiterating the global phenomena of ‘Go
Green.’ Exploring the school parking area, observing the different types of transport, interacting with the guest speakers are examples of a
few engagements which helped in developing deep conceptual understanding in the children.
The young learners of Nursery on the other hand were engaged in the unit under the Transdisciplinary
Theme- Where we are in place and time. The unit made them knowledgeable about different types
of journeys and the opportunities that one might experience due to the same. While sharing and
listening to each other’s personal travel experiences, the children learnt about the changes in the
weather, language, food, attire and alike that they might encounter when on a journey to another
place. Many brainstorming sessions, research tasks related to personal journeys which involved
interviewing the school nannies, security guards and the parents made the little learners eager to
make new discoveries.
Kindergarten students got an opportunity to extend and enjoy their creativity through a variety
of ways under the Transdisciplinary Theme-How we express ourselves. Probing into different types of images- static and moving, looking
around in the immediate environment to make a note of different images and trying to interpret them and brought forth their perspective.
The same was also evident when they explored creating images using different art techniques like sand art, shadow puppets; designing a
logo and later sharing its meaning with others. Having a close interaction with the guest speaker- a Bharatnatyam expert, gave them an idea
how facial expressions and hand movements can be used to communicate a meaning, as well.
Grade 1 Students explored the Transdisciplinary Theme ‘How we express
ourselves. Through this unit students got an insight into how people express
themselves using various means. Exploring verbal and nonverbal ways of
communication made them realize the importance of communication, its
means and forms. Watching a video on sign language made them understand
that verbal communication is not the only mean of communication. They
wrote letters and even marked emails to their parents drawing a deeper
understanding of the similarities and differences between the two.
There was a lot of excitement and exhilaration as the students of Grade 2 delved into the Transdisciplinary Theme How we express ourselves
andconsidered special events they celebrate. They understood the significance of their family traditions
and rituals connected to the festivals. A timeline on the events celebrated in school was made to make
them aware of the special events celebrated in the school. Spreading their wings globally they also
inquired about various festivals around the world. Children celebrated Halloween with lot of zeal and fun
by coming dressed up in scary and super hero costumes. Students demonstrated their gratefulness to
God and parents by understanding the significance and traditions of Thanksgiving Day.
Grade 3 students looked into the Transdisciplinary Theme How we organize ourselves by understanding
the meaning of measurement by reading different stories which helped the students to understand
the importance of measurement. They explored the various system
of measurements people have made to ease their understanding of
the world around them. Measuring tools were also displayed and
students were asked to understand their usage. Visit to Physics lab and
observing the tools used in Math lab made them knowledgeable about
various measuring tools and enhanced their observational skills. Trying
out both standard and informal ways of measurements made them
comprehend the importance of accuracy involved in measurement.
Under the Transdisciplinary Theme- How the world works, students of
Grade 4 developed an understanding on the different forms of natural
materials. An insight into the unit helped them to understand the
conditions that cause reversible and irreversible changes. A visit to

the Chemistry Lab further enhanced their research skills on the same. Students explored the school premises and observed various materials
obtained from nature. They were quick to comprehend the sources of the natural materials
using various strategies. They also understood the concept that the things obtained naturally
can also undergo changes. Their critical thinking skills were enhanced when they put forth
their understanding of the usage, impact and retrieval of any one natural material on the
environment through SWOT and concept wheel strategies.
Grade 5 Students scaffolded the Transdisciplinary Theme ‘Where we are in place and time’.
They analyzed the characteristics of civilizations and societies and the connections between
past and present. By understanding how various civilizations have changed down the ages they
were able to make connections between the past and present civilizations. They had an insight
of the location, culture and living style of the chosen civilization and excitedly presented their
formative assessment enhancing their communication skills. Students also understood the
processes involved in collecting, analyzing and validating evidence of these civilizations.
Environmental Initiatives
At SHIS we understand, appreciate and value our green gold (environment). It is important that this
precious gift is nurtured, preserved and reserved for the next generation. Celebrations with burning
of crackers hold a fascination for both young and old alike. Children being the largest consumers
of crackers, need to be educated about its harmful effects to their health and environment. Taking
up this cause students of grade 5 decided to organize an anti-cracker Campaign.
They made slogans and during the dispersal made the parents aware that burning crackers will
further pollute the air of NCR and will also add to the noise pollution. The children took initiative
to educate the masses about the challenges that we might face if we do not focus on being
environmentally conscious.
Participation in Marathon for promoting a cause
Young Highlanders of Kinderact Club took part in a Marathon on 19th November. The run was organised by
Rotary Club for the cause: Live Healthy, Breathe Healthy. Many students received prizes and certificates for
participating in the run.
Outdoor Camps and Excursions
Camps are a part of our school curriculum. It is an opportunity for
children to develop social skills, independence, decision making skills
and relationship building skills. During camps, students are encouraged
to be open to learning, accepting, caring and understanding
Grade II, III and IV went to Astroport (Sariska) for their annual camp in
the month of November. Students enjoyed sky gazing and star mapping,
solar and planet observation. Star gazing through the telescope was an
extraordinary event for them. The nature walk, organic farms,dance,
staying in tents with their friends and early morning jungle safari in the canters was an amazing experience for them. Grade V went to Jim Corbet
Park.Students enjoyed the natural beauty. Visit to the Kosi river and early morning safari in the open jeeps was very exciting. They spotted the
tigers and many other animals in the natural habitat which was an interesting experience.

Celebrating Environmental Friendly Green Diwali by Saying No
to Fireworks and Promoting Indian Art and Heritage
To save our surroundings especially the air from getting polluted
andto promote, ‘Indian Art and Heritage’,Highlanders decided
toCelebrate Environmental Friendly Green Diwali this year.
Students of Grade XI IBDP conducted an awareness drive to
sensitise the school community right from cleaning thehomes
by using herbal cleansers, to decorating and lighting and
promoted the use of decorative items made of eco-friendly
material. Students prepared the boards and banners ‘Saying No
to Fireworks’to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali for this year, and
for the years to come.
In their initiative Highlanders sold the aromatic and decorative
candles made by them using paraffin and gel wax, hand painted
earthen Diyas,eco-friendly rangolicolours, handicrafts like lamps
and lanterns made of recycled paper. The students had used gel
and paraffin wax in attractive glass containers to make aromatic
candles which can be used later in their homes as bowls and
glasses and decorative pieces. They infused attractive colours
and best of the natural fragrances and essential oils derived from
plants and herbs.Highlanders also motivated others specially the
juniors to use paper crackers within the decibel limits to reduce
noise pollution.
Students encouraged everyone to light up our houses with
traditional diyas as the diyas don’t just illuminate the home, but
they also add an aesthetic value to this festival. The best part
of using diyas instead of the lights is that they save electricity.
Saving electricity is definitely an eco-friendly activity. They also
explained why ‘Deep Daan’ is considered auspicious and is
friendly to the environment. Lightening of diyas will also help
thousands of potters in villages and towns to earn a livelihood.
The Highlanders also promoted the Use of eco-friendly
decorations such as flower garlands and duppattas to decorate
the homes instead of using plastic decorative items and ecofriendly colours for Rangoli that are made of natural ingredients
such as flowers petals, rice, turmeric, etc.. Proceeds from sales
of the candles and other decorative items were used towards
supporting and helping the underprivileged children.

for young leaders by
the tGELF, an education and leadership initiative by The Nand and
JeetKhemka Foundation, witnessed a scintillating national finale
at the campus of Scottish High International School, Gurgaon on
Sunday, 27 November, 2016.
The campus of Scottish High International School, Gurgaon was
abuzz with the activities of about four hundred young leaders
from sixty-five schools of India, Bhutan and Bangladesh as the
school played host, for the fifthconsecutive year, to the Grand
National Finale of the yearlong activities conducted by tGELF.
The two day finale commenced on Saturday, 26 November, 2016
with the inauguration of the activities by Ms. Gauri Eashwaran,
CEO tGELF and Dr. Cdr. Kartikay Saini, Chairman, Scottish High
International School, Gurgaon in the commodious lyceum of the
host school. In his welcome speech Dr. Saini exhorted the young
leaders to inculcate the virtues of, ‘ Grit and Determination’, to
achieve any and everything they dreamt of.
The inauguration ceremony was followed by a number of
preliminary rounds of competitions and workshops for the young
leaders. The national finalists of Global Youth Leader Competition
comprising participants from twelve schools from India and
Bhutan were exposed to finer skills of Leadership through an
activity-oriented and knowledge and skill based workshop. The
Amphi-Theatre was a witness to the vibrant session of colours
‘Magic with Colours’ based on ‘SunehraKal’.
The highlight of the post lunch session were the highly energetic
expositions one through the art of drama and the other
through the expression of thoughts and reasoning. The amphitheatre of the school was witness to an electrifying session of
‘Street Blenders – a platform to judge the dramatic skills of the
young leaders. The theme for this years’ competition was ‘Sab
ChaltaHai’. The participating schools put forward a plethora of
themes from the world of rampant corruption to demonetization
to bribery to discrimination.
The highly explosive session of Sense, Reason and Intellect i.e.
the Debate competition featured debaters from all over the
country.
The morning of 27thMs. November’16 began with the most
gruelling and the most engrossing session wherein Youth Leaders
from twelve schools showcased the endeavours taken up by
them to transform the society in a positive and a constructive
way paving way for others to follow. The event was judged by
galaxy of eminent trainers and entrepreneurs from the world of
education and business.
Curtains were drawn on the two day extravaganza with an
enthralling session of dance and mime presented by the students
of Scholastica International, Bangladesh.

Rejuvenating Rendezvous
October in this part of the world is not a
typical Fall Season. On the contrary it is a time
for rejuvenation of spirits. A time to celebrate
and have fun and frolic.A time for rendezvous
with gaiety. Highlanders in the IB DP are not to be left behind.
Rather, they are the ones to take initiatives and set the tone for
the mood of exhilirations.

‘Shoot with a Canon’, well the session on photography with
experts Ms. Vinita and Ms. Shalini literally set the tone. It was
time to test and hone skills, skills of a keen eye, of rhythm, of
melody, of mesmerizing compering and an entire gamut of
creative performances. It was time for the Annual Founder’s Day
celebration and time for Inter-Clan competitions. IB DP Students
were surely not to be left behind. They set the floor on fire
with their stellar performances in the Street-Play; The Annual
Founder’s Day, Harjas Kaur won accolades for the school when
she was selected to be the Vice-Chairperson of ManavRachna
International MUN.
IBDP Highlanders spread the message of eco-friendly Diwali with
a stall selling handmade Diyas, Candles and Decorative items.
This venture was a small but significant step in rejuvenating
Indian Art work.
Rendezvous with world renowned fiction writer Lord Jeffery
Archer is going to be a memory etched in the hearts of young
Highlanders who thronged to get their own copy of his selected
works autographed by the legendary writer.
It wasn’t just fun and frolic in these months as the IBDP
Coordination team of Ms. Renuka Bhasin and Mr. Amitabh Garg
along with Ms. Nimisha Parihar and Ms. Swati Vats attended
Webinars on Section A, B and C of Standards and Practices to
help enhance the profile of students and enrich the TeachingLearning process at the school. Ms. Renuka Bhasin and Mr.
Amitabh Garg also attended a Webinar on Theory of Knowledge
Assessment Practices and Issues.
The Registrations of students for May Examination Series for the
year 2017 have been completed and simultaneously the zone
has been set for the students to set down to sincere academic
rigors. Internal Assessments are in full swing and students are
fine polishing their submissions to enhance their grades and
moving towards achieving exemplary grades and admissions to
prestigious niche Universities and colleges.

There would be challenges, obstacles and difficulties in life, the most
important thing is not to lose hope and alwaystry to do your best. With
a series of competition lined up in the month of October- November.
First up was English Spell bee Competition and team Boyd securedthe
third position. For seniors there was Web Page Designing Competition
where Clan Boyd stood second and Ryan K Sony, Arushi Singh of Grade
IX IG, Shagun Kulshreshtha of Grade XI represented the clan.
Next up was General Knowledge Quiz Raghav Gandhi-- VI B, Tarun Ravi
VII A, Akul Vaishnavi- VIII G (middle school) and Samarth Narang-IX
B,Sanjana Kumar -XI B,Anvita Sirohi-XI A (senior school) represented the
clan. The quick wits of Boyd outshone rest of the teams and stood first
in both the categories.
Economics Symposium team Boyd tried their best to present the topic
of “Breach of security in the Banking Industry”.
In E-Poster Making Competition held in November Raghav Gandhi-VI B, Rida Mumtaz VII G, Siya Arora-VIII G were at their creative and
procedural best and hence secured the first position.
Senior Street Play Competition team Boyd comprising of Utsav Dutt--XI
C, Aarshi Rana XI C, Arushi Singh- XI DP, Anvita Sirohi-- XI A, Madhav
Dewan- XI C,Kunal Ganti- IX B, Nirpesh Mahlawat-IX B, Anuveer- XI A, Ian
Baswana - IX B, Neeyati Janghala -XI A, Samarth Narang- IX B excelled in
their theatrical skills to move the audience and judges and got Second
position.
Clan Boyd also put up the front desk boards and foyer boards in the
month of November which were appreciated by all. I would like to thank
all the clan teachers for their help and assistance.
Clan Lamont simply kept adding feathers to its cap with sheer hard work
and dedication. Highlanders Vishal Gupta, Sashwat Rath and Mahika
Rathod brought laurels to the clan by winning the first position in the
ICT Web Page Designing Competition held for Grades- IX-XII. One-of-a
kind Economics Symposium was held on the topic ‘Brexit’ wherein the
students from Grades IX-XII dexterously illustrated the advantages and
disadvantages of the policy. It was truly a close tie between the teams as
all the teams performed well. Ultimately, Vishal Gupta, Abhay Aggarwal,
Saumya Aggarwal and Sun Jin representing Clan Lamont bagged the first
position. Abaan Azhar, Tanmay Yadav and Amogh Kumar enthusiastically
participated in the G.K Quiz held for Grade V-VIII and bagged the second
position in the same.
Lamontians have again made the Clan proud by performing to their
optimum best in all the events and competitions in this month. I wish
the very best for all the Lamontians and hope they continue in same
trajectory.

sportsmanship, the other to inspire performance and ethical play. The
word ‘Competition’ literally means ‘to strive with, not strive against. At
all levels — and in all endeavors — competition is a double-edged sword.
It brings out the best and the worst in spectators and participants alike.
We teach our children win-lose contests almost from birth. We compete
to get into college and we compete for jobs. Competitive spiritis
simply a reflection of the way we’ve chosen to relate to one another.
Competition can inspire us to perform better while teaching valuable
lessons about teamwork, goal setting, and staying cool under pressure
— without trapping us in drama, ego bruising, and poor sportsmanship.
Competition can seem purely black and white: There’s one winner, one
loser, one competitor left celebrating, one left disappointed.
The months of October and November saw the students of clan
Macarthur flying high in the right spirit of competition and attaining
the goals they set for themselves. There were various Inter Clan
competitions such as English Spell Bee, MFL competition, G.K. quiz,
Economics Symposium to name a few, where most of our students
proved their mettle once again.

competition. Andersonians have given their optimum best and have

Competition (Grades VI-VIII) and in the Street Play Competition (IX-XII).
They also showcased their talent in the MFL Declamation and e-Postermaking (Grades VI-VIII) and were adjudged the second position. I

Winter time – keep yourself safe!!
With the foggy mornings, the cold breeze and
the dipped temperature we witness the start
of the winter season. Yes a much awaited
relief from the sweltering summer sun, but
at the same time we all need to be fully prepared
to enjoy the cold weather to the fullest.
A few precautions mentioned below will help us have the
pleasure of the season to the fullest as well as keep us and our
children safe –
 Thick layers a must – keep yourself and your children warm
by wearing sweaters and jackets. Make sure that the neck,
head, hands and feet of the little ones are covered well. Beware,
Scarves and hood strings can be risky for smaller children so use
of other alternatives is suggested.
 Keep yourself hydrated – As the days get colder, we notice
our skins getting dryer. As the air gets dryer, the body feels the
effects not only externally, but internally as well because our
systems tend to become dehydrated. When we are dehydrated,
we tend to feel sluggish because the bodies’ ability to flush out
the toxins decreases and our body systems slow down. When
temperature drops and wind increases, the air becomes drier,
meaning our bodies aren’t getting as much moisture as in warmer

months. Hence we should increase our
water consumption.
 Exercise as much as you can – it’s the
best season to exercise. In-case it’s too cold
to step outside for a walk or a jog, simple
indoor exercises should be done.
 Avoid munching sweets/snacks - it’s
the time when your appetite for eating
increases. We should avoid eating fried
food or snacks or gulping in sweets. The
best is to take more of fresh fruits and
salads.
 In-case you are using a room heater
or a car heater do not step outdoors
immediately. Switch off the heaters, let
your body be at the normal room temperature and then step
out.
So let’s all be a little more cautious and enjoy the winter season
to the fullest

At the dawn of day,

to visit their rich habitat.
The able guide guided us,
without any fuss.
As we went through the forest,
we put his knowledge to the test...
with different questions without a rest.
We dug into the depths of the woods,
enjoying with each other as much as we could.
Tigers, deer, peacocks n hens,
we sighted, up close, in their dens.
Monkeys’ galore is what we explored,
as the little tiger cub roared.
The jungle safari ended,
all our amazing memories blended
And that made our time there splendid!!!

Don’t be Selfish – Fire
In a small village, a little boy lived with his father and mother.
He was the only son. The parents of the little boy were very
depressed due to his bad temper. The boy used to get angry
very soon and taunt others with his words. His bad temper
made him use words that hurt others. He scolded kids,
neighbours and even his friends due to anger. His friends and
neighbours avoided him, and his parents were really worried
about him.
His mother and father advised him many times to control his
anger and develop kindness. Unfortunately, all their attempts
failed. Finally, the boy’s father came up with an idea.
One day, his father gave him a huge bag of nails. He asked his
son to hammer one nail to the fence every time he became
angry and lost his temper. The little boy found it amusing and
accepted the task.
Every time he lost his temper, he ran to the fence and
hammered a nail. His anger drove him to hammer nails on the
fence 30 times on the first day! After the next few days, the
number of nails hammered on the fence was reduced to half.
The little boy found it very difficult to hammer the nails and
decided to control his temper.
Gradually, the number of nails hammered to the fence was
reduced and the day arrived when no nail was hammered!
The boy did not lose his temper at all that day. For the next
several days, he did not lose his temper, and so did not
hammer any nail.
Now, his father told him to remove the nails each time the boy
controlled his anger. Several days passed and the boy was able
to pull out most of the nails from the fence. However, there
remained a few nails that he could not pull out.
The boy told his father about it. The father appreciated him
and asked him pointing to a hole, “What do you see there?”
The boy replied, “a hole in the fence!”
He told the boy, “The nails were your bad temper and they
were hammered on people. You can remove the nails but the
holes in the fence will remain. The fence will never look the
same. It has scars all over. Some nails cannot even be pulled
out. You can stab a man with a knife, and say sorry later, but
the wound will remain there forever. Your bad temper and
angry words were like that! Words are more painful than
physical abuse! Use words for good purposes. Use them to
grow relationships. Use them to show the love and kindness
in your heart!”

Golf News
Our Young Golfers got an opportunity to participate in the Ultimate
Golf Carnival, on October 23rd
2016. The mammoth event took
place at the Golden Greens Golf &
Polo Club, Gurgaon and Highlanders achieved soaring high results
while showcasing immense grit on
the turf. The team won the Winner’s Trophy along with 13 outstanding
individual medals.The sport event was attended by notable professional
golfers - Jyoti Randhawa and Digvijay Singh. It was a lifetime of an opportunity for the participants and they seized the moment with tremendous zeal to become champions!
We are extremely proud of each one of them.
Our budding Golfers also visited IMT Manesar Golf Course on 20th November 2016. The students played a 9 hole game where they all had
hands on experience of the golf course. They started with warm up session by hitting balls in the range. It was a learning experience for all the
students and they enjoyed thoroughly. The students were accompanied
by the golf coaches.
Highlander Ranveer Singh Saini was invited to participate at the ProAm
competition in the 10th edition of the Hero Women's Indian Open held
at the DLF Golf & Country Club’s Gary Player course on 10th November,
2016.
Anitya’s Golf Tip of the Month
Pause and hit for better rhythm
Leading golf professionals Your rhythm and tempo play
a very important role in quality and consistency of your
ball striking, especially in a tournament. Junior golfers
tend to swing too long and hit the ball too hard when
they play—both factors contributing to inconsistent
ball striking. As compared to a professional golfer, their
rhythm gets too quick in trying to hit the ball too hard
and they end up miss-hitting shots. Remember that your transition
should be smoother and not hurried. You must ensure when you start
the downswing, the club is absolutely still and the first motion of the
club is towards the ball.
The difference between a good player and a great one is the quality of
the transition the change in direction of the golf club from backswing to
downswing—and gives best results when it is smooth and not hurried
or jerky. The below drill gives you good rhythm and helps in stabilizing
the club, both at the top of the back swing as well as through the ball.
Take your back swing to the top and stay still for a couple of seconds.
This extended pause at the top is important as you can only hold the
body and the club in a stable position. If you are out of balance, you will
not be able to hold your position very well and the club, as well as the
body, will be moving all the time. Once you have achieved this balance,
swing the club through to a full finish making sure that there is one
continuous swing through the ball.
This drill is great for stabilizing golf swings in junior golfers and improving
the consistency of their ball striking.
