The sport of free running was developed in France and The United Kingdom. It was created by Sébastien Foucan, a French freerunner of Guadeloupean descent. Some of the famous practitioners are Daniel Ilabaca, Ryan Doyle, and Tim Shieff. Its ancestor sport is Parkour, which is pretty much the same as free running, but was formed from military obstacle courses. It has spawned many international events like the Red Bull Art of Motion. When you are free running, you run up walls and do backflips or aerial twists off of them. For example if you live in New York City and go to Central Park to free run, you might want to use your arms to help to jump over a ledge and then go to a wall and backflip off of it. Free running is used as the main navigation system in the Assassin’s Creed video game series. Foucan wanted to create a discipline that was more personal to the individual and easier to adapt to suit the individual’s goals. This idea was similar to Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do. Foucan was inspired to take what he found useful and what he liked from his parkour experiences and combine them into a sport. His early ideas were first spread through the documentary, Jump London (2003) followed by the sequel, Jump Britain (2005). The creator expands on a number of basics in his book FreeRunning, with chapters like “Learn to overcome obstacles” and “Competition is a limitation and an illusion.” Some of the other practitioners suggested other principles, like Daniel Ilabaca encourages people to think positively. He also suggests that practitioners might fall largely if they think they might. In conclusion, free running is a sport that was developed in a foreign country but some of the practitioners are here in America. It is the art of expressing yourself in your environment without limitations. While free running may look difficult in videos, all it takes is practice and positive thoughts. If you do, then you should try a bacon-wrapped turkey this year for Thanksgiving! The ingredients you need; a one, 10-pound turkey, 1 cup poultry seasonings, 10 cloves garlic minced, 1 1/2 cups olive oil, and 1 pound bacon sliced into thin strips. Directions: preheat your oven to 500 degrees. Then clean your turkey, and then dry it. After that, you need to mix all your seasonings together. Then rub the paste underneath the turkey, but you have to be careful not to tear the skin. Next, you need 1 to 2 cups of boiling water. You then cook your turkey for 30 minutes. You take out your turkey and turn the heat down to 350 degrees. You then cover the turkey in bacon slices. You can either overlap them or do a crisscross pattern. The final step is to put your bacon-wrapped turkey in the oven for two hours or until the turkey is at 160 degrees. The game highly respected by all gamers alike and got a 8/10 from IGN, Eurogamer, and Gamespy. I have played the game myself and all I have to say is that I have lost myself in gameplay for many hours at a time. My favorite part is FTL: Advanced Edition, this adds more ships, extra story and more species and races of aliens. This was announced in November and released to users on April 3, 2014. To conclude, this small and fun game is well worth the money you spend on it, and provides many hours of gameplay. I give FTL a 9/10 for great gameplay and amazing performance. I would also like to recommend this game to all steam users, and to gamers of every kind. Page 4 Newsletter Title Tip of The Month by Matthew Here are some tips for when you have the flu/cold. If you have stomach pains, then heat up a hot pad and put it on your stomach. If you have the flu or a cold, then each day take a shower so you can get rid of all of the icky bacteria. You should also eat warm foods such as soups and oatmeal. You should drink warm fluids like hot coco or tea; it helps with sore throats. You should also try and avoid milk since it creates mucus. You need to rest and take a nap or two. Do something to take your mind off things, like watch a movie or play a card game. When you finally get over your flu/cold, it would be a good idea to wash your pillow and blankets to wash away all the germs. Volume 7, Issue 2 Page 5 Black Friday by: Courtney Black Friday is November 28th or the day after Thanksgiving. Black Friday is the official first day of Christmas shopping where retailers have special offers or sales which draws large crowds of shoppers. It was named by the Philadelphia Police Department because it usually brings massive traffic jams and over-crowded sidewalks as the downtown stores are mobbed from opening to closing. In 2013 some of the best Black Friday deals were on smart phones, apple products, kindles, tablets, printers, computer accessories, and clothing. In 2011 in Los Angeles, CA, a lady pepper-sprayed other shoppers in Wal-Mart in an effort to get herself an Xbox. She injured 20 people and later turned herself in to authorities. In 2009, a year after the death of a Wal -Mart employee, Wal-Mart decided to stay open throughout the night and have shrink-wrapped items that would be opened at 5 am. The customers quickly grew impatient and started ripping open the items a few hours before they were supposed to be opened. Wal-Mart’s employees called the police and the customers were escorted out of the store and banned from Wal-Mart for two hours. The customers waited outside and yelled at the employees, pounded on the glass doors, and tried to sneak in. When going Black Friday shopping, here’s a quick tip, be careful, be kind, and be safe. I needed to pee really badly so I started yelling “I NEED TO PEE” at my big sister. She slapped me and it made me pee my pants, so I had to go into the store and change. Anonymus This year when the girls played football in P.E., we had to wear belts. When P.E. was over I couldn’t take the belt off. I tried to slip it off and my shorts went with it, and about 10 guys saw me in my underwear. Hayden S. Predictions by Emily How many snow days will we have this year? One of the challenges is in the elementary school, students learn how to read, but once at the middle school and they read for knowledge from the books. Some of the fourth graders said that one of the big changes is reading longer books and taking what they read, and applying it to their school work. They also said that they enjoy how the teachers challenge them. Also the middle school is bigger and has more kids. Another change was that instead of having a lot of class parties, the fourth graders get to go to the social with kids in different classes or even grades. Some of the fourth graders were scared of changing schools because they would have a new teacher. The new fourth graders voiced that they were afraid of the upper classmen. They are back to the bottom of the pecking order of grades. As the school year has started, these students have found out what middle school is all about, and they look forward to the socials and student council. Some of them are excited to being old enough to participate in 4-H. The fourth graders seem like they are fitting into this school really well. Welcome aboard fourth graders!
