Cooking With Confidence
At the L’Arche tova Cafe
written by: Christa campbell
A 2015 LITE grant recipient, L’Arche Tova Café provides supportive work
experience for people with disabilities who face barriers to employment. Their
mission is to make known the gifts of people with developmental disabilities
and create a more compassionate society.
L’Arche Tova Café understands that
their volunteers and employees with
developmental disabilities require more
training time than others, and that it must be
done in a supportive and respectful manner.
Through their training, participants gain a
sense of accomplishment and confidence
– they are then open to learning and
developing further skills.
We stopped by the café and met with one
of their long-time participants; cook Nolan
Saunders, 22, the catalyst for our grant
disbursement.
Nolan started at L’Arche as a volunteer in
2012 as part of his studies at Kildonan East
Collegiate and now works as a part-time
cook. Once reserved and quiet, Nolan is now
very outgoing and confident - even training
new cooks in the L’Arche kitchen. “I like
coming to work every day – it’s like a family
here. The staff and volunteers all talk and
have fun,” says Nolan, who has autism.
He adds that the best part about his job is,
“learning new things.”
The experience has been so successful for
both parties that L’Arche is now empowering
Nolan to take on additional duties through
their catering services under the guidance of
General Manager Nick Morier. The increase
in services will ensure that the café gets
enough business during slower periods, and
the cooks will benefit from learning new
skills.

As Nolan looks to the future, he would like to
try even more new activities. He has plans to
fulfill missionary work and help the homeless,
something that both his mom and sister are
involved in. Though that would mean saying
goodbye to the café (not anytime soon!),
Nolan credits his experience of “interacting
with people everyday” as helping him to
achieve these future goals.

baked goods at the Transcona Market every
Thursday throughout the summer. Nolan’s
favourite thing to eat on the menu is the
quesadilla, but he says that he enjoys cooking
everything and it all tastes good! So, stop by the
cafe this summer and enjoy their great food and
service with a smile.
L’Arche Tova Café is located on Regent
Avenue in Transcona and open from 8am to

A Place of Her Own Cheryl Henderson’s Story
Written By: Anne Lindsey
Thank you for your printing sponsorship

On the surface, it can be as easy as getting a bill
paid. That’s how the LITE-funded Emergency Wages
program at North End Women’s Centre (NEWC)
helped Cheryl Henderson turn her life around.
“That program saved me” declares the 40-something
grandmother as we chat in her new apartment. In return for
working at the Centre’s Up Shoppe, a social enterprise thrift
store, Cheryl earned the funds to pay off a large overdue
Hydro bill. In turn, Winnipeg Housing accepted her application
and Cheryl now has a place to call her own – after two
years of “living out of a bag” as she puts it. “I still can’t quite
believe I have this place” she says, proudly pointing out her
granddaughter’s first painting taped to the fridge.
Cheryl credits NEWC, the Up Shoppe and the wonderful
people who work and volunteer there with her renewed sense
of purpose but it’s clear that she possesses more than just a
bit of determination and resourcefulness of her own. Her story
sheds light on how easy it is to slip through the cracks.
Not that long ago, Cheryl had a steady job as a housekeeping
supervisor in a hotel. She had already overcome enormous
challenges as a child coming from a dysfunctional home, and
made a clear decision that her own children, born when she
was quite young, would have a better experience than hers. She
returned to school and gained her Grade 12 at age 38.
But when she developed fibromyalgia and had to give up her
job and her fiancé died of cancer, things started to crumble.
Grieving, she went to a relative in Calgary. Her second
granddaughter’s birth brought her back to Winnipeg, but once
2
here she could find neither work nor a place to live. Couch
surfing with her children and a friend was not a long-term
option. She tried hotel living and a rooming house, but found
intolerable conditions. As she called every phone number she
could find, to no avail, things went from bad to worse. “I was
really desperate” she recalls, “I wondered how a person like
me, who worked and paid taxes for half my life could end up in
a line for food and sleeping in the “womens bunker” at Siloam
Mission. That was the real eye-opener for me. I could see the
desperation on the women’s faces. At least I had some people I
could talk to. Some of them didn’t even have that”.
A friend had passed along the NEWC phone number, and
suggested the Up Shoppe. For a while Cheryl didn’t call, but
when she did – “It was the best thing I’ve ever done!” she says.
“Working there was like getting paid for a vacation” she jokes
“it was so friendly and time passed quickly with the variety of
tasks – tagging, sorting, cleaning – I did a bit of everything”.
Cheryl loved the Up Shoppe so much that she’s committed to
continue volunteering there. She has enrolled in a computer
skills course at Opportunities for Employment and envisions
herself in a front desk or clerical kind of position.
“I want to share my story to show that people like me can have
hope”, she says. “Now I have goals and my grandchildren know
that I have a home – all because I took a chance and made a
phone call”.
LITE was proud to support the Emergency Wages Program with
a CED Grant in 2014, and to donate a Star Blanket in support
of the Up Shoppe, this year. For more information about NEWC
and the Up Shoppe, visit www.newcentre.org.

can multi-task, I can work in a kitchen since
I cook at home. But I never got callbacks. It
was depressing. This opportunity at Chow

Wayne began working in the food industry
at the age of 15. With only an 8th grade

have a space and it’s tough to pay for it.
But I’ve fought my battles and I’ve made it
happen and that’s got to be a strong voice
to the North End,” says Wayne.
Wayne is committed to strengthening the
north end community. “We have to support
each other,” he says. Wayne asserts that
his North End neighbours have shown
tremendous support, more so than any
other community he has worked in. “They
know I’m struggling to make something
here and they’ve embraced it. They enjoy
the food that they get. They like that it’s
healthy fresh food, which [can be] hard to
come by.”
At Chow Down, Wayne has two
employees. Miranda, mother of eight,
works six days a week. She shops,
delivers, prepares meals, caters concert
hall events and more. “Every day is a
learning experience. It’s not just punching
the clock”. Prior to working with Wayne,
Miranda rode a Dickey Dees Ice Cream

LITE Community Partners
our 2014/15 Grant & Purchase partners
YOUR DONATIONS AT WORK IN OUR COMMUNITY...
Every year LITE works hard to ensure that your generous donations make a difference for people who really need it. We “spend”
our Disbursements in ways that help create jobs and training opportunities both through traditional grants to charities, and also
through our strategic purchases of Star Blankets and Christmas Hamper goods.
In the past year, LITE began to change our timing for Grants in order to be able to plan for disbursements based on a known
amount of money. In addition, this has allowed us to introduce a new public Campaign based on our CED Grants (maybe you’ve
seen our PSAs on Global TV!). In the future, we will be making all of our Grant disbursements in the month of June. Hamper
purchase disbursements will still take place in November/December. To make the switch gradually, we disbursed half of this
year’s grants in March. The other half ($25,115) will be disbursed in June, 2015. We’ll celebrate all the Grant recipients at a special
reception following our AGM on June 17th.
In 2014/15 LITE supported the following agencies and enterprises:
$3,299
grant - new!
L’Arche Tova Café — L’Arche Winnipeg
L’Arche Tova Café is a social enterprise
offering training and job and volunteer
opportunities to developmentally-disabled
individuals. LITE’s funding will help L’Arche
to continue to employ one of its participants
as a cook and as a trainer/mentor to new
participants. He will also take more training to
become a part of L’Arche’s catering program.
(See the article about Nolan on page 1).
$5,500 grant
Newcomer Skills Building Project —
Immigrant and Refugee Community
Organization of Manitoba
The Immigrant and Refugee Community
Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM) will
continue their successful skills building
program for new Canadians. They will again
hire between 4 and 6 of their tenants to carry
out a range of building repairs depending on
the needs of the IRCOM building and the
interests of the participants. Repair skills will
be developed through on the job training
in carpentry, paint and patch and basic
plumbing. This program allows newcomers
to Manitoba an opportunity to earn extra
income while simultaneously gaining handson training, and on a schedule that can
accommodate family and school hours. This in
turn aids in increasing their work experience
4
in a Canadian environment, as well as building
up language and leadership skills and overall
confidence to gain valuable and long-term
employment in Manitoba.
$2,100 Star Blanket

Cree-Ations
Cree-Ations specializes in handmade
Aboriginal Arts and Crafts. They are a locally
owned and operated family business that buys
most of the furs and hides for their products
locally. Cree-Ations Star Blankets were
donated to other community organizations
working on poverty alleviation to assist with
their fundraising.
$5000 grant
UpCycle — The WRENCH
The WRENCH’s UpCycle Program provides
under/unemployed community bike shop
volunteers with paid training and work
experience, marketable skills, and holistic
support as they repair and rebuild bikes
for distribution in the community. UpCycle
targets marginalized participants living
below the poverty line. Most are inner-city
residents, and of Aboriginal descent. Other
targeted demographics include ex-offenders,
newcomers, women, and members of the
LGBTQ community. The supports that Upcycle
participants receive go beyond employment.
WRENCH staff assist participants in
overcoming other barriers to employment
ranging from health concerns and financial
struggles to housing crises and addiction
issues.

Native Women’s Transition Centre
NWTC is a long-term safe residence for
Native Women and their children. Their
catering service provides employment
and training to 23 women who live at the
centre. Training includes preparing budgets,
purchasing, food safety and handling, and
cooking. LITE purchased Christmas baking for
Hampers from NWTC this year. NWTC is also
a Breakfast catering partner.

Neechi Foods Co-op - Alternative
Christmas Hamper Initiative
Neechi Foods Worker Co-op runs a
Community Store and Neechi Commons –
full-range grocery stores and specialty shop
in Winnipeg’s inner city. Neechi provides
employment, training and opportunities for
collective business ownership to inner city
residents. LITE purchased the grocery items
for our Alternative Hamper program from
Neechi. Neechi Co-op is also a Breakfast
