Sheriff’s Message
Believe it or not we are already half way through the school year.
Testing is on the way! Our major focus continues to be on
fundamental skills and meeting each child’s individual needs.
Students in fourth grade have been working hard each day on
writing skills. We have several standardized tests beginning in
February: The Broward Standards Assessment (BSA) test will be
given to all third, fourth and fifth grade students on January 30th – February 9th. Please
take the time to review daily homework with your child. Research indicates that students
are more successful in school when parents take an active role in their child’s education.
We are prepared to assist you with materials and share strategies to work at home with your
child. State testing is just around the corner. If you need home study materials for your
child, please contact the school or your child’s teacher for extra practice materials. We
would be happy to send them home.
Deadline to Apply for School Choice is Wednesday, February 8, 2017. If you are
interested in submitting an application for your child for a magnet program, Nova school
or school reassignment for the 2017/18 school year, thedeadline to submit the School
Choice application is February 8, 2017.
You can apply online or learn more about the application process by
visitingbrowardschools.com/schoolchoice.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank you, the parents, for your continued support.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Sincerely,
Robert N. Schneider

Head Start Celebrates February Holidays
We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on February
14th. Students will be creating Valentine's Day boxes for
homework. Look in your child's backpack for directions!
In addition, we will discuss two former presidents whose
birthdays are in February: George Washington and
Abraham Lincoln. We will discover their images on our
money (coins and bills) and discuss why “Honesty is the
best policy.”
Registration for Early Head Start and Head Start will begin
soon! Please check your child's book bag daily for more information.
The rest of the month, we will be rhyming to the beat and rocking with the
alphabet! Don't forget to be involved in your child's education....spend time
with your child, complete the suggested daily activities and read every night!
February is a busy month in Kindergarten! Black History Month, Presidents'
Day, Valentine's Day, Groundhog Day, and the 100th day of school are a few
of the many themes we will focus on during the month of February. The
students are eagerly anticipating their field trip to the Broward Center on
February 13th, and we will begin collecting for our next field trip, Tradewinds
Park Farm, that day. The $13.00 online payment and permission slip will
be due for that field trip on Monday, February 27th.
First Grade Plans Trip to the Rodeo
Every year the Davie/Cooper City Rotary Club and the
South Florida Trail Riders Association sponsor the
"Horse Tales Literacy Program" for our fabulous first
graders. They always begin with "Meeting and
Greeting the Horses" in January on our campus. Our
students are thrilled to get up close to these beautiful
animals. At this time, each student is given a brand
new book to read, Little Black, a Pony.
We are now so excited for the next event. We are
looking forward to our upcoming Bergeron Rodeo field trip on Wednesday,
February 22, 2017. We can't wait to read to the horses and receive another
book by Walter Farley. We know this will be a memorable experience for our
young readers. We are so grateful to have this reading program offered to our
students to help promote literacy. Parents, please sign and return the
permission slip to your child's teacher as soon as possible. Thank you!

Second Graders Need to Read Nightly
Second graders are excited to attend our field trip
to the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society during
February 28th and March 1st. Students will travel
back in time to see what Fort Lauderdale looked
like 100 years ago. Please check your child’s
homework folder or agenda for more information
regarding the field trip. Comprehension is a key element in reading. Ask your
child to retell what he or she has read. Remind your child to include the story
characters and what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story.
Continue to read with your child for at least 20 minutes each night. In addition,
please help your child study and review addition and subtraction facts from 020. Students need to be fluent in these facts by the end of 2 nd grade. Everything
you do at home helps your child to be better prepared at school. Thanks for
all of your support and encouragement.
Third Grade Test Preparation is
Underway
We are gearing up and working hard to prepare ourselves
for the Florida Standards Assessment by taking a practice
assessment in math and reading at the beginning of
February. It is very important that students read each and
every day and practice the fact families in multiplication.
Make reading and math time fun by practicing together
with your child! We also had an amazing time at
Flamingo Gardens and on our trip to see James and the
Giant Peach.

show interest in their children’s studies it emphasizes the importance
of education.
6. Have your child use i-Ready to strengthen reading and math at least

Mastery of multiplication facts 0-12 is imperative for success.
