Hypnosis in Health 101 - Robles Community Support

Hypnosis in Health 101
Hypnosis is the study and practice of the subconscious mind and how it influences
behaviors’.
This course will involve Kappasinian hypnosis. Dr. John G. Kappas (1925-2002) Dr.
of Psychology and his brother Alex Licensed Psychotherapist started HMI (Hypnosis
Motivational Institute) in 1968 in Tarzana Ca. The first nationally accredited college of
hypnotherapy recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in Washington D.C. and
approved by DETC (Distance Educational and Training Council). In 1973 Dr. Kappas
wrote the laws on hypnotherapy in the Federal Dictionary of Occupational Titles which
are now in all 50 states.

of Hypnotherapy” which the credit hours may be transferred to your continuing
education in the dental, medical and psychological fields of your studies.
To understand this unique hypnotic modality, let’s examine Dr. Kappas. Born in
Chicago IL. From immigrant Greek Orthodox parents then moved to Phoenix AZ in 1949
and started a hypnosis clinic selling scooters in half of the building and course in
hypnosis in the other half. The established medical and psychological field at that
time did not approve of his methods including Dr. Milton Erickson in which NLP (Neuro
Linguistics Programming) of today is named for. A year later Dr. Kappas moved to
Hollywood CA and started hypnosis courses in half of the building and sold juke boxes
in the other half. In 1968 he then moved to Tarzana CA where HMI is presently located
with 60 hypnotherapists and 100’s of thousands of client’s since then. His unique
techniques in E&P strategy has revolutionized modern day hypnotic clinical
hypnotherapy.
In 1779 Franz Anton Mesmer found interesting a women in his town of Paris as being a
“sleep-walker.” In 1849 Dr. James Braid a Scottish surgeon coined the term hypnos,
Latin for sleep. In the late 1800’s Dr. Sigmund Freud used hypnosis referring to it as
“free association.”
Than in 1958 with the support of Dr. Milton Erickson he convinced the AMA (American
Medical Association) to recognize hypnosis as a viable modality. However only about
50% of the clients were benefiting from this. Dr. Kappas discovered a way to hypnotize
nearly 100% of clients that were willing and able. After listening to hours of his clinical
practice tapes he discovered that E’s or emotionals (introverts) had a differing
suggestibility than the P’s or physicals (extroverts). Simply by suggesting to the clients
the way in which they learn, direct words for the P’s and indirect words for the E’s,
positive suggestions in the hypnoidal state now is accepted in both type a and type b
personalities.
To hypnotize or not to, legally.
Under Arizona law, hypnosis and hypnotic techniques may be used by individuals not
licensed to practice psychology or medicine under two sets of circumstances: (1) upon
referral from a person licensed to practice medicine, dentistry or psychology, or (2)
where the person using the hypnotic techniques offers avocational, vocational or selfimprovement and does not offer therapy for emotional and mental disorder. While
hypnosis may be an effective technique for many purposes, the effectiveness may vary
from individual to individual, and no specific result can be promised or guaranteed.
HMI’s Mission Statement.
“It is the mission of HMI to continually explore, within ourselves and others, how our
subconscious mind can influence our behavior, affect the events of our lives and
empower us to achieve our dreams and goals. Our philosophy is based on the belief
that the subconscious mind is a goal machine, dedicated and driven to the fulfillment of
a programmed path.”
HMI has done extensive research on whether someone in hypnosis will do something
that is contrary to their belief system. Many clients were hypnotized to the lower depths
some would bleed from the palms of their hands upon suggestion but would not hit a
paper bag. Our critical area of mind is always present and will prevent clients from doing
what they would not normally do. About 40% of clients need to be “dehypnotized” in
order for the full benefits of hypnotherapy to be realized.
As a graduate from HMI and a member of the AHA (American Hypnosis Association)
AFL/CIO local Union 472 I can attest to the excellent curriculum HMI has to offer. With
over 500 streaming videos and new programs being assembled frequently, HMI is lightyears beyond the rest and continues to be the world’s leader in the practice of
hypnotherapy.
What Hypnosis in Health 101 will teach?
In the first class we will dispel the myths of hypnosis and build trust. The “theory of
mind” will be explained and E&P strategy will be closely examined. Self-hypnosis will be
discussed so that new tools are available to the class. In the following classes topics will
include: the scale of imagination, sexuality, NLP, hypno-diagnostic tools, guided
imagery, hypno-drama, retro-regression, medical hypnosis, hypno-amnesia, ideo-motor
responses, child hypnosis, fears and phobias, dream therapy, past-life regression,
defense mechanisms, my favorite hand writing analysis and habit control amongst
others. The purpose of this course is to realize how our subconscious mind works and
how we can affect congruence in the subconscious and conscious mind for selfimprovement. Sit back and enjoy this course in which we and the world may be
perceived differently than before.
What’s expected of the class?
Attend this 4 week seminar. Complete the “Foundations of Hypnotherapy” course
online. Fill out the E&P suggestibility and sexuality questionnaire and then score it.
Other additional materials will be available for check-out at the end of class to be
returned by the start of the next class. An open mind and a willingness to learn what
may not be obviously apparent. Demonstrational hypnosis will be practiced with willing
volunteers each class. Have fun!

Theory of mind (supplement to class)
In order to understand how we think, a model is due. The following explanation
will help in that.
MU’s or Message Units is the broad term describing our “input” into the conscious then into the
subconscious mind via critical area of mind. These inputs are best explained by NLP. VAKOG.
Visual-Auditory-Kinesiology-Olfactory-Gastrointestinal.
About 4 Megabits per second (I have heard of as much as 1 gigabits per second) is entering the
mind through our senses. About 2 kilobits per second is what the subconscious mind can accept
the rest is released via physical reactions especially during the last stage of sleep in the venting
stage. Dream therapy is a powerful tool to release these unneeded, unwanted and unnecessary
bits of information that is no longer useful and only cluttering up the mind. With less clutter, the
mind and body upon awake can then start with a fresh uncluttered day. This decreases your stress
level helping to diminish Para taxic distortion or your emotional buttons.
Our critical area of mind works on the principal that the input we experience is filtered through
logic, reason, will power and decision making which is formed by age 8-9. Suggestibility is a
term that explains how we learn which is influenced by our primary care giver usually the
mother. Our subconscious mind at this time usually has its script formed which is a road map to
the rest of our life. This can change due to external influences. Our subconscious thinks as a 5
year old and only in symbols. When entering REM sleep our eyes have a tendency to move left
to right, this is the subconscious mind viewing symbols under the eye lids. What convinced me
of symbols in the mind was Japanese, Korean and others symbols. While we in America have a
mere 26 letters, the ancient Chinese had 60,000 symbols each representing many ideas.
The conscious mind makes up about 12% and the subconscious makes up about 88% of total
mind power. Our subconscious is in charge of the ANS (autonomic nervous system) and other
functions of the body that doesn’t require conscious thought. The amygdala in the brain is the
source of the flight/flight syndrome. In the fight our bodies secret epinephrine which stress,
tension and anxiety are by-products known as the sympathetic system. In flight dopamine is
secreted throughout the body known as the para-sympathetic system which relaxes the body.
Natural self-repair mechanisms function only during relaxation.
It is estimated that we have 50+ stress responses every day. To learn how to balance the
stress/relax cycle is the roots of hypnosis. Self-hypnosis is a good tool for this. Threats may be
real, conceived, perceived or imagined by the conscious/subconscious which than invokes the
fight syndrome, these thoughts can only be dismissed by physiological means through dreams in
which our motor tonic inhibitors are invoked throughout the body preventing us from acting out
our dreams physically. In the dream state we experience auditory/visual hallucinations. If regular
sleep is not maintained then auditory hallucinations and visual hallucinations may result in the
awake stage. It has been estimated that 70-90% of diseases may be alleviated by reducing stress.
Hypnosis results in the hyper suggestible state invoked by the fight/flight
