YOUR GRATITUDE REPORT 2014 Strengthening Hampton Roads families since 1883 MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Thank you. Your support has given hope to our neighbors, our friends, our families. Throughout this year’s Gratitude Report, you’ll see how your support changes lives in our community every day. Each story rings with hope. A hope that draws our neighbors out of fear when the foreclosure notice arrives. Hope when the care of a child with disabilities begins to weigh heavily. It’s a hope that powers our youth and families through every chapter of their lives. And, there is more work to do. Hundreds of youth await for a caring adult role model through our Team Up Mentoring program. Hundreds more foster children are longing for a family and a place to call home. This is why I’ve given my time, heart and resources to The Up Center, and why I will continue to do so. No other organization touches so many people in our community for every dollar invested by supporters like you. I hope that you’ll join us in making 2015 a year of greater success for our neighbors. Stories of unemployed fathers gaining the skills and confidence to support their families. And, stories of young adults with disabilities discovering their potential. These stories filled my ears when I assumed leadership of The Up Center this spring. And, these stories are ones that you’ve helped to create. Because of you, we are enabling people in our community to handle life’s overwhelming challenges. The following pages highlight a few of these lives. There are thousands more. Each one has overcome obstacles thanks to your support. You’ll find our financial statements at the back, and we are proud to show you how we invest your gift. In the last year, we expanded our youth programs. Teens and young adults gain a second chance at success through our new Face Forward Juvenile Diversion program. We nurture their strengths and offer healing from the past. We fan their dreams to become doctors, restaurateurs, business owners. Your investment makes their journeys forward possible. And, their success lifts our entire community. So, we thank you for helping to shape the future of Hampton Roads. Together, we can create more stories of success and hope for our neighbors. Yours in transforming lives, Tina Gill President & CEO CHILDREN'S FUTURES ARE BRIGHTER.. Community Partners - United for Children Families of Young Terrace Parenthood is one of the most exhausting, exhilarating and rewarding experiences of a lifetime. Add in the stresses from poverty and even the everyday demands can be overwhelming. Thanks to United for Children, a program of the United Way, parents in the Young Terrace Community of Norfolk have a new neighborhood resource. The weekly support group, led by The Up Center’s parent educators, offers information on parenting skills, stress management, and safety practices. Face Forward The Up Center’s new Face Forward Juvenile Diversion program offers an alternative to underserved young people in Norfolk. During the 14-week program they are offered mentoring, on-the-job training, help in completing their high school degree. They also volunteer at places like the Union Mission and Food Bank of Southeastern Hampton Roads. Graduates emerge with certifications in areas such as food handling or restaurant management and often return to share news of employment or graduation. AND A FA REBUILDS HIS FA It’s 3 a.m. and Jason Carter has just finished his last car-detailing job of the day. “It’s all worth it,” smiles Jason. A graduate of The Up Center’s Responsible Fatherhood program, where participants learn both job and life skills, Jason credits his experience with the program for the strong work ethic he’s developed, “They taught me that hard work will pay off.” That hard work is beginning to show results. Jason has launched his own business, a combination of janitorial, power-washing, and mobile detailing services. “It pays the bills and supports my daughter, who means everything to me,” said Jason. With the relationship building skills he developed during the program, Jason has reconnected with his teenage daughter and their bond is stronger than ever. “I’ve learned how to communicate with my daughter,” said Jason, “I make it a priority to see her often and share some laughs.” “Up Center Books helped instill not just job skills, but the work ethic that I have.” Jason Carter The Up Center’s Responsible Fatherhood graduate and proud father A FAMILY RECOVERS.. Kimberly and Brian Darden felt secure. They were employed, owned a home they loved, and their two children were preparing to enter college. When Kimberly had to have a routine medical procedure, she anticipated a quick return to that life. After the operation went wrong, she developed complications that resulted in reconstructive surgery. “I was in the hospital every other week,” said Kimberly. As the medical bills mounted, the family’s finances began to crumble and they struggled to make ends meet. The need for help became urgent when the foreclosure notice arrived. “I turned to The Up Center after a friend had told me about her experience,” said Kimberly. With the advice and support of their financial counselor, Kimberly and Brian avoided foreclosure and enabled their children to pursue their college educations. “Today, we’re in a townhouse. We couldn’t be happier.” “Today… we couldn’t be happier.” Kimberly Darden The Up Center’s Housing & Financial Counseling client AND A MOTHER CAN CARE FOR HER SON. The demands of being a parent are enormous. The demands of parenting a child with disabilities are even greater, and families can feel alone in their struggle. Less than 25 years ago parents had little choice but to send their child to live in an institution, away from those who loved them. Dona and Jerry Didio wanted more for their son, Kyle, a boy with both mental and physical disabilities. Through our Family Life program, The Up Center works to help people with disabilities live within our community. Families who open their hearts and their homes are specially trained so they provide a safe and loving home to those in need. Dona undertook the training program herself, learning to be Kyle’s caretaker and caring for his individual needs. “The best thing about The Up Center’s Family Life program,” said Dona, “is that I can provide the best possible care for my son and from the comfort of our home.” “I can provide the best possible care for my son… from the comfort of our home.” Dona Didio The Up Center’s Family Life program client Benefactor $10,000 + Administration for Children & Families ( DHHS) Amerigroup Foundation Anonymous (2) Emily and Victor Brannon City of Norfolk - CDGB Department of Labor Hampton Roads Community Foundation Joshua Harris Estate of Barbara O.
