Dear Members,
Our final series of the year goes
right to the heart. Seniority is offering
a Focus series that will provide a
complete overview: How the heart
works, what can go wrong, new
treatments and, of course, a class
about keeping this most important
muscle working. Be sure to attend the
first three Focus classes (designated
by a microscope on page 2) and
have your Pathway to Wellness card
marked. Attend the Lunch & Learn
class, turn in your completed Pathway
to Wellness card and your lunch will
be FREE. You will receive your card
at the first Focus class.
To help you plan ahead for 2015,
we have included information about
our multi-night tours and adventure
travel. In response to requests, there
is an informational slide show for
The Trains and Parks of Colorado with
Mark Warther. Seniority On The Go
has something for all tastes and price
ranges. If you like day trips, get in the
holiday spirit by signing up for one
of our exciting Christmas tours.
’Tis the season of wonderful
Thanksgiving aromas, twinkling
lights and decorations of Christmas,
and resolutions made for the New
Year. We wish you blessings and
hope to see you soon.
Wishing you good health always,
TriHealth Heart Institute:
Cincinnati’s Leader in Cardiac Care
Having a heart problem can be a life-changing event. At the TriHealth Heart Institute,
we bring an entire team together to care for our patients. Our highly regarded and
nationally recognized cardiologists and surgeons perform Cincinnati’s widest range
of cardiac procedures at multiple locations to best serve our patients. The TriHealth Heart
Institute has pioneered cardiac care for more than a generation, and performs more
cardiac robotic procedures than any area hospital. A regional leader in robotic-assisted
surgery and one of the first in the United States to offer a minimally invasive alternative
to open-heart valve replacement, TriHealth Heart Institute is proud to be independently
and nationally recognized for being a leader in high-quality cardiac care.
• Bethesda North is proud to be recognized for the seventh time as one of the nation’s
top 50 cardiovascular hospitals by Truven Health Analytics.
• TriHealth’s Hatton Institute for Research and Education has become a pioneer in
robotic-assisted heart surgeries and one of the nation’s most prolific research centers
based at a private hospital
• Bethesda North and Good Samaritan’s cardiac surgery programs have both achieved
the highest quality patient outcomes as measured by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
They are the only hospitals in this area to have received this designation.
The combination of skilled surgeons, compassionate nursing and leading-edge technology,
makes the TriHealth Heart Institute a superior choice for cardiac care in Cincinnati.

perfused with oxygen and nutrition, and to keep our brains active and thinking. How does it
work? What if it doesn’t? What are the most common problems that can happen and what new
techniques, technology and innovations are there to keep our hearts going? Come learn from
the TriHealth experts and the TriHealth Heart Institute.

1. And the Beat Goes On
3. CHF—Congestive Heart Failure
Four chambers, different valves, continuous pumping
action—how does the heart work? The heart is a unique
combination of electrical machinery and plumbing pipes
which have to work together to keep us going. The anatomy
and physiology of this incredibly complex organ is the
beginning of our new Focus series.
CHF is the leading cause of hospitalization for adults over 65.
Heart failure doesn’t mean the heart has stopped working.
It means the pumping power is weaker than normal; blood
moves through the body at a slower rate and pressure inside
the heart increases. This causes the valves to stretch to hold
more blood or to thicken. The heart muscle’s walls eventually
weaken and can’t pump efficiently anymore. Then the kidneys
hold on to water and fluid builds up in the arms, legs, feet,
lungs, or other organs. What can you do? What’s new?

2. Does Your Heart Skip a Beat?
What is A-Fib? It’s on all the commercials! Atrial fibrillation—
the dangerous condition when heart chambers beat too
rapidly—can be very hazardous. And sometimes, you don’t
even know you have it. When its electrical impulses are chaotic,
this can cause the heart to not squeeze blood efficiently and
sometimes a clot can form. There are many ways to diagnose
and treat A-fib, some of which are very new!

TriHealth Kenwood
A major construction project is underway in Kenwood along Interstate 71. A new four-story, 112,000-square-foot medical office
building will replace the current Group Health facility when construction is completed near the end of 2015. The TriHealth
Kenwood building will be the new home to Group Health and will allow the expansion of other TriHealth services. The new
building will enable Group Health to grow from five to eight primary care physicians and will add space for six new specialists as
well. In addition to the Group Health offices, TriHealth Cancer Institute (TCI) and TriHealth Heart Institute (THI) will expand their
offices from the current Bethesda North campus, allowing both to add oncologists and cardiologists at the new location. The
new building will also feature on-site diagnostic imaging, including CT, X-ray. ultrasound, mammography and dexa scanning.
“This new facility will make it easier for our patients to receive a broad range of services in one convenient location,” said John
Prout, President and Chief Executive Officer at TriHealth. “This is an important step in meeting the needs of our growing patient
population in northeastern Cincinnati.”
Group Health doctors will continue to see patients in the smaller building, which is to be torn down after the new one is completed.
The space will be used for parking.

Seniority Healthy Hint
Healthy Hint: Flossing and Your Heart
If you are like most people, your dentist’s
recommendation to floss your teeth may go
unheeded. You think, “I brush my teeth,” or “I wear
dentures,” why should I worry? Well, keeping your
gums in shape can lower your risk of heart disease!
As gum health increases, the narrowing of your
arteries through plaque build up decreases to a
significant degree. Not flossing and clogged arteries
may also be related. Inflammation is a crucial link in
the causes of arterial plaque and obstruction, and
bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream
and lead to inflammation and dangerously blocked
arteries. It is also a leading cause of vegetation in the
heart valves. Bacteria and plaque do build up on
dentures too, so don’t be fooled. Keeping your mouth
clean and fresh by flossing at least once a day is one
very significant way to a healthy heart!
