A NOTE FROM THE STAFF
Dear 4-H Families,
Congratulations on another fantastic summer! The Morris County 4-H Fair was a big success
thank to our dedicated 4-H members, incredible 4-H families and volunteers, and (of course) the
great weather. We provided fun and educational displays for visitors, showcased our member’s
hard work to the community, and demonstrated the fun of 4-H. Thank you all for your dedicated efforts in helping with so many areas. You all deserve a round of applause!
Kelly Dziak
Program Associate
You can read all about the BEST IN SHOW results in this issue of Discovers. Our Fair Photo
contest winners will be announced at Awards Night on Friday, November 13 at the American
Legion Post 155 in Whippany. The annual 4-H Awards Night is a special time where we recognize the hard work and achievements of our 4-H members over the past year. We hope you will
join us in the celebration.
Speaking of reasons to celebrate, everyone is encouraged to show off their 4-H spirit during National 4-H Week from October 4-10! Wear your 4-H t-shirts, invite new members to club meetings, set up a window display in a public space, and participate in the 4-H Trivia Contest on
Facebook.
We are excited to start the 2015-2016 4-H year with new clubs, new members, and new volunteers. If you or your club need any assistance, please reach out to the 4-H office. We are happy
to help in any way we can.
Have a great start to the 4-H year and we’ll see you at Awards Night!

2015 CLARA R. FARST AWARD
Bill Russell
This memorial award captures
the spirit of Clara R. Farst, a
relentless 4-H volunteer who
gave unselfishly to others,
without ever looking for
recognition in return. The
2015 award goes to Bill Russell
who made sure everyone was
well cared for during the hot
Fair days. Bill delivered ice to coolers scattered
around the fairgrounds, reset the hospitality station so there was always something cool to drink,
and helped out in various Fair jobs wherever
there was a need. He also supported the Lil’
Squealers 4-H pig club in their first year at the
Fair and assisted his daughter in her new role as
Watermelon Eating Contest chair. Thank you Bill
and congratulations!
2015 RICH & BETH EVERETT
INNOVATION AWARD
Rosanne Oblen
This memorial award captures the spirit of Rich and
Beth Everett, long time 4-H
volunteers who dreamed up
exciting ideas to improve the
Fair. Rosanne is nothing
short of new ideas and tireless enthusiasm. In addition
to her roles as leader of
five 4-H clubs, Petting Barn tent manager, and
calf wrangler for Cow Pie Bingo, she also wanders
the fairgrounds in animal costumes to the delight
of fairgoers and 4-H families. The new butterfly
exhibit at the 2015 4-H Fair was made possible
thanks to Rosanne’s eye for fun attractions. Rosanne inspires others to leap in to fun and action
with 4-H. Congratulations, Rosanne!
ALUMNA OF THE YEAR AWARD
Kelly Elam
Kelly joined 4-H as a 3rd grade member of the Morris County 4-H Jefferson
Cooking Crew club. In high school, she served as president of the Teen Council 4-H
club, attended national 4-H events, and served as the Army Reserve Youth representative on the NJ Operation: Military Kids (OMK) State Team. During her father’s deployment, Kelly experienced first-hand the support 4-H provides to children of military personnel. Kelly returned to 4-H later as the NJ OMK Program Coordinator and through her work, she connected military families in NJ with local 4-H opportunities. Since her office was located down the hall
from Morris County 4-H, she assisted with planning and packing for each major 4-H event. She attended most 4-H events as a workshop presenter, judge, photographer, or to man the registration table.
From set-up to take-down, she was ready to get the job done and always with a smile. This past March,
Kelly started her own business in event planning and has been busy working on state wide 4-H events
including the upcoming 4-H Homecoming. Kelly continues to volunteer at Morris County 4-H events and
is eager to support the 4-H program in any way possible. Congratulations Kelly for being named “Alumna
of the Year”!

State 4-H Goat Show
Just Kid ‘n’ Around 4-H goat club member, Brandon Lauchnor, represented
Morris County at the annual State 4-H Goat Show held at the Hunderton
County 4-H and Agricultural Fair on August 20th. This was his first time
competing at the State 4-H Goat Show and he received a “Very Good” ribbon. The following is Brandon’s report on his experience:
“I entered because I enjoyed showing at the Morris County 4-H Fair, and I thought it would
be fun. There were 139 dairy and market goats entered. Since my Boer goat is a market goat,
he was weighed before the show. You lead your goat up to a large scale where they stand to
be weighed. Then you lead your goat into the show ring. There were two parts to the show.
The first part was showmanship where you are judged on your knowledge of your goat and how
well you handle it. The second part was fitting where you are judged on the quality of your
goat and how well it is groomed. It was a great day, and I’m looking forward to the next show.”

Buckanears
On July 10th, the Buckanears Club took a trip to The Barnyard Sanctuary
in Blairstown, NJ. In the spring our club held a bake sale at Tractor
Supply in Flanders and raised money to make a donation to the sanctuary. The Barnyard Sanctuary helps find homes for farm pets that have
become homeless. We had a tour of the sanctuary from Tamala Lester
and we were able to meet all the animals. It was really fun because we
were able to walk right into the fields and pens with the animals! So
many animals are taken care of at The Barnyard Sanctuary! It’s nice
to know that these animals are loved and taken care of. If you are
looking to adopt a farm pet, don’t forget to check The Barnyard
Sanctuary first!
- by Emmalee Miller
Over the summer the Buckanears enjoyed some very exciting
events. At the fair The Buckanears ran two successful fund raising
games; A scavenger hunt and mini golf. The club also ran safety patrol. Club members wore safety patrol belts with buttons declaring
them "official" and helped guide fair goers away from sticking their fingers in cages to showing a place where they could pet a rabbit safely
and with club member assistance. This helped protect both animals and
people.
The small animal tent this year was shared with 2 other small animal clubs, Furry Friends and
Paws & Claws and members enjoyed working together as a team and keeping the tent neat.
The Buckanears were thrilled with winning Best in Show for their mustache banner and also
got lots of new member interest.
On Aug 18th the club members reconnected at a pizza and sundae party to work on the club
scrapbook.

Furry Friends Saves a Family of Guinea Pigs
Can you image a family of guinea pigs running loose in an apartment building
without any supervision? Well that what it was like for a family of five guinea pigs in the city. The animal control took them in and then did not know
what to do with them. They reached out to Furry Friends club leader Shannon Cirero, and she generously offered to help get them forever homes.
Lucky for the guinea pigs it just happened to be the start of the fair and
what better place to find them homes. The members of Furry Friends
worked hard all throughout the fair taking care of the pigs and spreading
the word that they needed homes. All the effort worked when all 5 animals
found homes. It is amazing what we can accomplish when we pull together.

Just Kid ’n’ Around Gives Back
All year the kids from Just Kid ’n Around have been working hard on a fund raiser for the Barn
Yard Sanctuary. Every meeting the members worked hard and made hand crafted goat milk
soap to sell at the Fair. We made over 80 bars of
soap in every color and fragrance imaginable. The
soap was a big hit at the Fair. Every bar sold and
we made over $150 for the Barnyard Sanctuary!
The week after the Fair the club went to the
sanctuary to give the donation in person. We got
a private tour of the farm. It was great to see
the animals and how our donation would be put to
good use.

Teen Council
Club members were kept busy during the Fair with a variety of jobs including set-up and cleanup, opening and closing ceremonies, Cloverbud Corner, announcing, Tricky Tray, and running the Root Beer Float
booth. We had a great time at the Fair and look forward
to another fun year as a club. Anyone in 8th grade and
up who is interested in joining Teen Council should contact the 4-H office. We’re always happy to have new
members!

Shutterbugs
Morris Marksmen
The Shutterbugs club is moving its time to

Morris county library. Members and new members please take note.
This year at the fair the Shutterbugs ran a successful photo
booth by proving fair goers a
chance to create fun memories
with silly props. Also with the
help of the Buckanears club
some lucky fair goers got to have a picture
with some of the fluffiest members of the
club, the cute little rabbits.
The Morris Marksmen shooting sports club
had a blast at the annual 4-H Fair! Club members went over important safety points to
those coming to the archery range who were
learning to shoot. Some older members even
showed fair-goers how to use the bow and arrows properly. Members also worked well together at the cotton candy booth, handing out

Reminders for
Clubs with Websites
Social media is a great way to build community between your members and advertise your club to the
public. Remember, your site represents 4-H, must
protect your youth members, and should be current.
If your club has a website or Facebook page, keep in
mind that the site must:

 Include the phone number, email, and address of
Morris County 4-H office

Nominate Your Club Members!
In 4-H Youth Development, we encourage and recognize youth for their achievements. This recognition
takes many forms, from a pat on the back and saying
“Good job”, to presenting
a pin or ribbon for project
achievement.
4-H club leaders may nominate their members for a
variety of awards to be distributed at County Awards Night (November 13th) or
at a club meeting. These awards recognize the work
of each 4-H member over the past year.
The 4-H office will be sending each club information
regarding the different awards and their criteria. Contact the 4-H office to learn more about nominating
your club members.
Reach Out to New Members
Leaders, we need your help to put our best foot forward! Frequently, the 4-H office receives requests
from potential new members interested in joining a
specific 4-H club. If you receive an email from the 4H office regarding a potential new member, please
reach out to them right away. They are excited to
learn about your club and want to get started as soon
as possible.
Even if your club is not quite ready to start meeting,
let them know! This way, they won’t be left waiting
to attend the next meeting.
Be sure to mention:
 Meeting schedule and location
 Next meeting date
 Activities club members
participate in
