Introduction The first sentence of this introduction must be written in such a way as to grab the reader’s attention. This is called a hook. It can be either a bold statement, a quote from a noteworthy person, or a well thought out question. Anytime you use a quote or statement from a published document you MUST reference it as a footnote. The footnote must appear at the bottom of the page in which it appears. The middle section of your introduction paragraph will contain general background information about your topic. Remember not to let the reader know exactly what your project is going to discuss. The idea of the background information is to lead up to the specific details of your report. The last 1 - 2 sentences is your thesis statement. Your thesis statement will let the reader know what you are going to discuss with out ‘announcing’ it. What is meant by that is, don’t write, In this report I am going to be discussing....... Instead, honor the intelligence of the reader. Always write in the third person narrative voice. NEVER use the words I, me, or you. What follows is an example of an introduction.
