TERRY
I’ll have a Jack and Diet Coke.
TOM
It’s OK Sal, put it on my tab.
TERRY turns to see the deputy. She quickly changes her demeanor to that of a clueless
blonde.
TERRY
Oh, thank you officer but it’s not necessary -TOM
Rock Creek ain’t the kinda place where a pretty lady buys her own booze.
TERRY
Well, how charming. Join me for a drink, sheriff?
TOM
It’s deputy, actually, ma’am, and I’m on duty so I really can’t be par-takin’ –
(TERRY slides her stool over to make room for the deputy)
TERRY
Oh, come now, man like you can’t handle one teensy little drink?
TOM
Well…I guess one drink can’t hurt. Sal? Wine cooler on the rocks.
(TERRY goes back to her torn pages as Sally gets the drink)
TOM
Lemme guess. You’re new in town and you’re lookin’ for an opening.
TERRY
Very good -TOM
Hadja pegged from the start.
TERRY
Can’t hide anything from you, can I? Actually, I was kinda looking for a friend. You
don’t know of any new people in town, do you?
TOM
Can’t…think…of…any new…folk.
(He stares at the ceiling in thought for a while)
Nope. Nobody comin’ to mind.
TERRY
Hmmmm. Maybe you can answer something else that was worryin’ me…
(He’s all ears and eyes as he stares all over her).
TOM
Ain’t no cause to worry in Rock Creek, ma’am.

TERRY
I was reading something about those sheep killings –
TOM
Oh, that. Don’t you worry your pretty little head ‘bout that ma’am, we’re getting’ to the
bottom of it.
TERRY
You have a susp…susp…suspect or something?
TOM
Now where’d a sweet thing like you learn a rough word like “suspect?”
TERRY
I heard it on one of those “Cops Get Them Bad Boys” shows. Anyway, is a girl like me
safe? Unescorted? I mean, it sounds so dangerous…
TOM
Whole thing’ll be over soon enough, ma’am. Ya see, we do get us a suspect. Only a
matter of –
TERRY
Do you know who it is?
TOM
(laughing) Aren’t you a Georgia peach? So interested in men’s work and all –
TERRY
(catching herself) oh,
my curiosity always gets the best of me.
TOM
Gets a text on his cell
Some other time ma’am. Duty calls.
