The AGM is early next month and we are hoping for a good roll up of
members to vote for the new committee.
A number of committee members have been nominated but we still
need a Minutes Secretary and a Treasurer so if you feel you would
like to join the team please let someone from committee know.
Let your friends know about our great theatre and invite them along.
Cheers
Michele

Social Notes: Meet our Member | John Sayles
John joined ACT 1 Theatre in 2005, when he appeared in ‘Murder in Company.’
He has since been involved in about 20 plays as an actor or director with them.
Some of his favourites were ‘The Odd Couple’, ‘Table Manners’, Business
Affairs’, ‘Last of the Red Hot Lovers’, ‘Hancock’s Half Hours' and recently
'Entertaining Angels' and he has worked with some wonderful people.
Also John has managed to be involved in two Australian Tours in professional
plays ‘Calendar Girls’ and ‘Ladies Night’ as well as appearing as an extra in
various full length feature films, including Narnia 3 and Pirates 5.
He is proud that two plays he directed for ACT 1, ‘The Donohue Sisters’ and ‘Down Came A Jumbuck’,
won at festivals on the S.E Qld Festival circuit and he also won Best Director awards for these. Recently
John directed his first full play for ACT 1, ‘Up Pompeii’ which was very well received. He hopes to do more
directing in the future and has a play and cast in readiness for this years Festival circuit under ACT 1’s
banner. John is also writing a crime novel set in the Sandgate area, which he hopes to complete this year
and then find someone to publish and distribute it.
Social Notes: Meet our Member | Cheryl Bartlett
“I can’t imagine for the life of my why this will interest you all but I’ve been asked to provide a few words
so forgive me. I grew up watching classic movie marathons into the small hours of the morning, and fell in
love with Humphrey Bogart and Jimmy Cagney and with the magic of the story telling of theatre and film.
Life sent me off into a different direction, as it does. Apart from some Spanish dancing performances at
Freeps concerts, there was no theatre for many years until 1996 when I popped along to Act 1 theatre to
offer to help backstage for Tomb With a View. I ended up doing a very nervous audition for a part and
was lucky enough to secure a role in what was the start of a beautiful friendship (couldn’t resist the Bogie
quote) with theatre.
Just as well I ended up on stage as I discovered that I can’t see a thing in the dark, so backstage work
was not a practical option. I just hope that none of you were at that first play and
remember a rather rude word muttered when I sat on a table at the beginning of a
scene in darkness & plonked my hand straight into a glass of water. One of my
fondest memories of that play was the gathering in the dressing room as the cast all
“died” one by one. I was enthralled with it all including Peter Lovely cracking jokes
as only he can and Bill & Glenys Ferguson telling some wonderful theatre stories.
It’s still a wonderful world - where else can you “try on” so many different
personalities, get the chance to entertain or tell someone’s story, and meet and
work with such a special family of actors, crew, directors, and of course our
appreciative audiences. Thank you”

Mousetrap Theatre | Siren | Written by David Williamson
Set in the late 1980's in a small Australian coastal town, a group
of undercover cops execute a sting to take down a corrupt mayor.
Pumped up on testosterone, the motel’s close quarters, and
accessible bedrooms, the scene is set with all men vying for the
winning prize – Liz.
Fast paced, raunchy and brutally honest with David Williamson's
unmistakeable comic style.
