Chasing Gold
Churnet View are celebrating the big win for the Moorlands
Inter-Schools Cross Country Championships for the second
year running.
The competiton involved Year 5 to Year 11 teams from secondary and middle schools across the
Staffordshire Moorlands area with Churnet View team winning all four races to take the championship
in impressive style.
The team were coached by Great Britain International Endurance Runner and member of staff, Mr
Jason Burgess. Mr Burgess said, " We had excellent performances from all year groups especially from
Year 5 pupils Sienna Philips and Alex Johnson, Nathan Pointon in Year 7 and team captain Ethan
Ollier also in Year 7."
Mr Burgess is also quoted as saying "It has
been an honour and a privilege to have coached
the team over the past two years and I hope to
continue our successful running and fitness
record..."

To show off art talent within the school, exhibitions
have been taking place in the art room, here at Churnet
View.
Willam Clough, says "It really shows how much people
care about my art work. It was a happy experience. It
was a successful exhibition which I really enjoyed."
Will, 12, worked on his exhibition pieces for a year and
a half, and exhibited all the work he had made over this
time, within a 20 minute lunch time slot.
Others that have ran an exhibition include Oliver
Povey, Alfie Goldstraw, Katie Barker and Katie Illsley Do we do enough sport to
gain successes? Krav
Maga instructor gives his
opinion
“I feel Churnet View in terms of sport has a good
academic structure in place, giving the children a range
of opportunites to succeed and grow as individuals.
Teaching in Churnet View is a pleasure as the children I
teach are always willing to try out Krav Maga.
Churnet View’s cross country team is a part of the
school, and we can all be extremely proud of them.
The strength in numbers that the team has is a credit
to the children’s enthusiasm and the efforts of the staff.
Success in any sport gives children a taste of winning
and this in turn helps to focus the children in other
areas.
I would always say to anyone entering into any sport
that great effort and practising hard will be rewarded."
The Reading Race
The introduction of Accelerated Reading is
a positive impact on school life
Recently the school has started Accelerated Reading (Star Readers). This is something that the
pupils will take part in so that they will get awarded for their reading. With this the teachers will get
notified on how many words each pupil has read. Pupils will also be given guidance on choosing the
best books for them, using their Reading Ages and ZPDs from their Star Reading tests. Copies of
this information will be sent home.
Another thing that teachers will know is which form group has read the most, also which individual
person has read the most. The top forms for each year are 5C, 6B, 7B and 8D. Most words read is
held by Leon Balderstone, 8D, at approximately 3,000,000. He is followed by Chloe Roulstone, 8D,
at around 2,000,000. Leon and Chloe are included in a group of 'Leximillionaires' (1 million words
read). The first to reach this status was Jude Hansen, 8D. Other Leximillionaires
include Jude Roberts, Charntelle Saragg, Elenor Humphrey and Hannah Grindey.
Hopefully many more will join this impressive group in the future.

Farm
An update
Churnet View are now in the process of developing a school
farm. Here is an update on how it is getting on.
On Tuesday 23rd November there was a
cooking event. Six Churnet View pupils took
part.
We spoke to Claire, a year 8 pupils who
entered.
What did you cook?
"I cooked a chicken stir fry"
Did you enjoy the competition?
"It was great, I didn't feel any pressure!"
Did you impress the judges?
"The judges were impressed with all the
groups"
Congratulations to all the participants, and
especially:
Eleanor Forsyth-Cox
Winner of the Cookery Competition
The Chickens will produce our own eggs. We will be selling
the eggs to the local community and also we will use them in
the school kitchen and cooking room.
The shed will be the winter housing for the animals, also this
will be where the animals will be fed in the winter
Churnet View are in the process of developing an outdoor
classroom. We interviewed Josh who has been helping Mr
Burgess build it and he said “All the electrics are finished,
but they are just finishing the flooring.”
Thank you for taking the time to read this. We will have
further updates as it is in the process of being completed.

Winter Fest
Extravaganza!
The Best Christmas
Jingling Jumpers
Christmas jumper day, the only time of the year
where Churnet View Middle School will all be
wearing their Christmas jumpers, on Thursday 17th
December. Remember, blend in with the crowd and
wear a Christmassy jumper!
Dear Danes
As Churnet View has a strong relationship
with Thorning School, a school from
Denmark, exchanges have taken place, so
sometimes some of their teachers come to
Churnet View and some of ours go to
Denmark. Miss. Shepherd was one of the
teachers who went down to Denmark and
she stated:
“It is a fantastic experience for both
students and teachers and I really enjoyed
my trip to Denmark and seeing the different
ways of teaching.”
This term we were delighted to be joined by
Lorne, the Headteacher of Thorning, and
Bettina, an English, Danish and Music
teacher. Both enjoyed their stay here, with
Lorne addressing the whole school during
an assembly. We look forward to making
the most of the opportunities arising from
this brilliant relationship. Christmas Activities
Churnet View’s Winterfest is on Saturday 5th
December 2015. It is from 11am until 2pm. On
Thursday 10th of December, which is next
week, it is Christmas lunch! On the 11th of
December it’s coffee and carols for year 5
grandparents with delicious snacks from our
amazing kitchen and the lovely singers with
Christmas carols. And last but not least the
pantomime which is Peter Pan so make sure
you are all ready for Friday the 18th of
December which is the last day of school!!!
First of all, the Christmas fair is being held on
the 5th of December 2015 and because of
kind donations from the student and parents on
nonschool uniform days, (toiletries, chocolates
etc.) we have been able to hold this awesome
event.
Next, the coffee morning, for all year 5
grandparents on the 11th of December 2016
9:30am – 11am. A note from our teachers...
This is the first issue of what will hopefully become a regular publication, that will last for years to come.
It has been produced entirely either by, or in conjunction with the pupils - who have done a fantastic job
of pulling this together with little or no planning, and in a short space of time.
As the pupils become more familiar with the software and the processes involved in producing a
publication such as this, we expect the next issue to be even better!
Well done to all the Y8 pupils involved.
Mr. Windsor and Miss. Shepherd
Safety Update
Evacuation During Tests!
An unexplained fire alarm interrupted a few classes of pupils
trying to complete an online test; they had to stop and go
outside.
Impressively, the pupils did not let this distract them and they
largely exited the building calmly and swiftly.
Mr. Fryer, Headteacher, has high standards for the safe
departure of the school and a successful procedure.
The aim is to be out in under 5 minutes, but the pupils missed
this target and need to be even swifter in future.

Churnet View's new Vision and Values
system has made a positive impact on
children's behaviour; it has transformed
the way rewards are earned and has
helped to bring the school together.
Since the announcement of the system,
pupils' behaviour has improved
tremendously in lessons, corridors and
out on the yard and as a result the
school is now a much calmer, happier
and more productive place, where pupils
feel safe to learn.

Alongside this, we have also revamped
our system for sanctioning poor
behaviour. Road Safety Week
November saw children across the school learning about
how to stay safe on the roads and streets, as part of the
National Road Safety Week.
Pupils learnt plenty about stopping distances, do and do
nots. how to avoid the risks of the roads, and the
consequences if something does go wrong. Head teacher, Mr. Fryer was happy to
comment that incidents of poor behaviour
seem to have reduced already, although
he also added: "I don't believe we have
perfected things just yet."
Look out for issue 2 coming soon...
