MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
CONGRATULATIONS TO POINT VIEW WE ARE NOW A SILVER ENVIRO SCHOOL
On Tuesday we had a very important day of reflection and
planning, involving students, teachers, parents and our
EnviroSchools Facilitator, Haley Lowe. At the end of the day
we were declared to have reached Silver status in the
EnviroSchools programme. This recognises that our school
has attained an advanced level of awareness of
environmental sustainability issues and has woven an
environmental perspective through all learning in our school.
Next week I will share with you our school’s ‘Vision for
Sustainability’, but this week I would like to thank all those
who have helped to get us to this point in our enviro journey.
Jenny Naus is our current enviro leader and she has put a
tremendous deal of work into leading our enviro learning and
the recent reflection process. Previously, Sherri Rhodes and
Ksenia Tauroa had also held this leadership role.
Helen Page has been a primary driver and support in our
school’s enviro work. As a parent and staff member, and
for many years as our landscape gardener, Helen has been
innovative, committed and extremely supportive of all our
learning and development.
In 2011 the Botany Life Community Trust organised and
funded the transformation of the area behind our Junior
classroom block into an outstanding enviro learning area.
Termed The Hive, this area provides a wide range of learning
experiences and is a pivotal resource for our students.
Sincere thanks to these people and to all of our teachers and
other staff members, for their commitment to this
important facet of learning at Point View School.

Walking School Bus
Leadership Programme
Thank you to everyone who attended the recent
disco and a big thanks to those teachers and
parents who helped out.
Coming up next is the sausage sizzle which has
been rescheduled to the 22nd September. We
will have included our new gluten free and
vegetarian sausage options.
For our year six students we have a little design
competition coming up to keep you busy over the
holidays. We are looking for a design for our
2016 graduation t-shirts, so watch for the notice
coming out soon with further details.
It was great to see new faces at our last Family
and Friends meeting. If you would like to come
along and check out our meetings, our next
meeting is on 11 October at 7pm in the staffroom
(upstairs in the hall). We'd love to see you there.
Science-athon
Thank you to all the parents who have sent
their sponsor money in. It would be
appreciated if we could have all the
sponsorship in by Friday 23 September.
On Monday 5 September we had our first Walking
School Bus Leadership meeting where a number
of our more senior children were given the
opportunity to learn some new leadership skills.
The focus was around understanding what it
means to be a good role model and how to
develop skills in helping and leading others. They
will also learnt about road safety and first aid.
They have been issued with ‘Learner Licences’
and will progress through to restricted and then full
licences as part of the programme.
This will hugely benefit the running of the Walking
School Buses as we will develop a great team of
students whom we can rely on to help us keep the
bus operating in a responsible manner.
This programme is a great introduction to
Auckland Transport Travel Wise and continues
through to Intermediate schools as well, where
more leadership opportunities are available.
Another great reason to join the Walking School
Buses!

[email protected] or 274 0637.
STUDENTS TAKING HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME
Many families choose to take students out of school during
term time for holidays. While overseas holiday experiences
can be beneficial for students, the Education Act does require
children to attend school each day that it is open for tuition.
Principals may allow an absence of no more than five school
days.
Please note the following changes to the way term time
holidays need to be advised to the school. These changes
come into effect from the beginning of Term 4.
Process for term time holiday notifications
• For term time holidays of up to five (5) days only please
complete the online form on the school’s website at least
one school week prior to the first day your child will be
absent.
• For term time holidays for a specific purpose such as a
family holiday overseas in excess of five (5) days,
notification must be submitted in writing to the Principal
(please note you cannot use the online form for this
purpose) at least two school weeks in advance of the first
day your child will be absent. The Ministry of Education
requires the school to record such absences in the
attendance system as ‘notified but unjustified’.
It is a Ministry requirement that any child absent from school
without written confirmation of a return date must be removed
from the school roll after 21 days.

After school STEM classes have been successful this term so will return in term 4 on Wednesdays with a brand new programme
based around the Lego Master Builder Academy resources – www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sKfsq5TJSw . For anyone who missed
out this term there will be two STEM days in the second week of the holidays October 4 and 5 focusing on investigating 'The
Science of Star Wars’.
It is widely viewed that today’s economy and tomorrows' innovation is powered by the STEM subjects - Science, Technology,
Engineering and Maths. There are great STEM learning opportunities available at Point View outside school hours for small groups
of like-minded children. Children will work with exciting hands on science equipment unavailable in NZ. Highlights include,
ultraviolet light battles with the Millenium Falcon, coding your own Star Wars games, getting to investigate a Jedi Force Levitator,
Star Wars Robotics, learning how to wield a light sabre by Darth Vader himself and even using actual brain waves to lift an X-Wing
hologram.
There will also be a separate programme led by an expert coder for the wannabe Millennium Falcon engineers and pilots. We will
be learning coding with ARDUINO programmable micro computers in an attempt to simulate all the flashing lights found in the
cockpit. We will learn about digital inputs, outputs and sensors.
If interested in any of the above please ask for further details from [email protected]
