He lived in the Southern Bay of Islands, in the territory of Ngati Manu, of Nga Puhi. Also known as Whiria, by 1815 he was chief over a village in the Waikare District and was reported by newly arrived missionaries to be graceful, well proportioned, strong and attractive to women. Upon the death of his uncle, Pomare I, he took his name as well as his place as leader of Nga Puhi. Pomare II was involved in trading with European shipping and a supporter of European settlement in the area. He signed the Treaty of Waitangi on 17 February 1840. Lovatt 1896-1968 was a third generation master potter and well qualified when he came to N.Z. from Newcastleunder-Lyme, England in 1923 when he took up position of manager at the Benhar Pottery in Otago. Lovatt Temuka’. Note: Te Rangi Pikinga born c.1800 and also known as Te Pikinga or Pikinga was an extremely important figure in Ngati Apa history. She witnessed the turmoil of inter-tribal warfare in the period from 1819 through to the signing of the treaty with endemic warfare and violence, as a young woman she was captured by a Taua party lead by Te Rauparaha of Ngati Toa. Te Rauparaha’s nephew Te Rangihaeata took a fancy to Pikinga and their subsequent marriage affected a peace treaty between Ngati Apa and Ngati Toa. Diameter 130. $160 The following lots: 309-377 come from the estate of Captain Percy James Green and form a collection put together by him while working as a merchant sea captain plying the Yangtze River. Green, born June 1900, gained his Master’s ticket at the port of Hong Kong in January 1924, he was in Hong Kong for a time prior to this date, where he remained in the employ of Butterfield and Swire, a merchant shipping company until his departure to Australia in late 1943. In 1944 he returned from his Australian holiday as a passenger on the ‘Beehar’, which was torpedoed and shelled by the Japanese battleship ‘Tone’ on the morning of 9th March, the Japanese ship continued its shelling of the incapacitated ‘Beehar’ killing many of the passengers. Green was one of the lucky survivors pulled aboard a lifeboat then imprisoned in a Tokyo prisoner-of-war camp. At the war’s end he was released and travelled to Te Kauwhata, N.Z., to recover. Returning to Hong Kong in 1948 he met his wife-to-be, whom he married that year coming back to NZ and settling at Russell in the Bay of Islands, making ‘Tahapuke’ a five acre native bush coastal homestead their residence from late 1948 until around 1958. Photos of this homestead can be seen below and on the front cover of this catalogue. Upon Green’s death the collection passed to his descendant, our vendor. The highest bidder to be the purchaser subject to the Auctioneers having the right to refuse the bid of any person. Should any dispute arise as to the biddings, the lot in dispute to be immediately put up for sale again at the preceding bidding, or the Auctioneer may declare the purchaser which will be conclusive. No person shall advance less at a bid than a sum nominated by the Auctioneer and no bid shall be retracted. All lots are sold subject to the right of the seller or his agent to bid or else to impose a guide or reserve price. Immediately after the sale, the purchaser to pay down 10% of the purchase price in part payment and shall pay the balance within five days of the date of sale.
