600 km SKI EXPEDITION

Skiing to the South Pole is a life-changing experience.
Forging a new route to the South Pole is a historymaking event. Icetrek specialises in creating new and
exciting possibilities in the world of polar adventuring
and this opportunity ranks as one of the greatest.
Group size is limited, only five team members
including the guide, so don't hesitate in joining us and
becoming part of an elite few that create Antarctic
history.
After final preparations at Union Glacier Camp in
winds make it feel colder still, but in state-of-the-art
Antarctica we fly by dedicated Twin Otter to the edge
equipment we are well protected. During the
of the Ross Ice Shelf on the Antarctic contiguous
expedition we ski for 8 to 10 hours a day, hauling
coastline, where continent meets ocean. In reality
sleds weighing 80 kg (180 lbs), in all types of weather
there is no ocean to be seen as it lies 150m below an
over extremely challenging terrain. This is a very
ice shelf. To the south lies a magnificent mountain
demanding expedition. We expect the ski component
range through which the Reedy Glacier, never before
to take around 37 days, depending on route nuances,
traversed, carves a path towards the Antarctic plateau
weather, snow conditions and group strength. As on
above. Flanking the glacier are virgin peaks and
all expeditions, success is a team effort. The group
hanging glaciers that stand as silent witnesses to our
travels together, roped up on the glacier when
trailblazing team as we journey up this colossal river

of ice. There are no waypoints to follow, no anecdotes
and prepare meals. Expedition members should have

skiing, cold-climate camping experience, glacier travel
knowledge of the route ahead. Navigating as modern
skills and a high level of fitness.
pioneers we blend satellite imagery and topographic
maps with what we see ahead of us. Your guide, Eric
Philips, has first-hand experience of this thrilling
feeling, having made a world-first traverse of the
Shackleton Glacier to the South Pole in 1998-99.
After more than a month of skiing we finally reach the
South Pole. Behind us we leave a ski trail that will
disappear in the next storm but will be forever etched
on the exploration map of Antarctica. At the South
Pole we rejoice in the glow of success and camp
At 2200m/7,200' elevation we finally break through
restfully as we wait for our aircraft that takes us back
the mountain range and reach the plateau. Here we

experience the inner heart of Antarctica, travelling in
time-honoured sledding tradition across 330km/200
miles of barren icescape towards the South Pole at
2835m/9300 feet. Like the glacier below, no skis have
traversed this segment of Antarctica; what we see
before us is new to the human eye.
This 650km expedition should only be considered by
the most committed adventurers, willing to undertake
a rigorous daily training schedule for several months
prior to their trip. If adventure, challenge, teamwork
and perseverance bring you great satisfaction and you
want to experience true Antarctic exploration, there is
