I cannot believe that the summer is almost over, it has been a very busy summer with lots of rides but we still have more rides that are scheduled for the next couple of months. Hope to see you all at our next LOH ride. I just got back from a 3-week bike ride we rode to Pittsburgh, Washington DC and down to Nags Head NC and back home. Mini hog did very well; rode over 4500 miles and the weather was great, no rain and it wasn’t too hot when we rode throughout our trip. We had a wonderful time and it was my first time to visit many of the States. Our LOH meeting is on September 10 and October 8, at 6:30 at Old Chicago on North Academy and Austin Bluffs. Ladies of Harley will be having a Full Moon Dinner ride on September 19 and Harvest Moon Ride on October 18. We are currently working on the route and location for dinner stop; more info to come. Stay tuned! Karla Miller Thanks to those that came out and rode “I didn’t go to Sturgis” on August 11. I would like to thank all the ladies for volunteering for our rides, meet n greets, and helping out with breakfasts during our HOG meetings. You’re very much appreciated for all the volunteering you do for our Ladies of Harley Group. Hope to see you all at our LOH events! You can take advantage of the cooler temperatures – Cool, crisp air is very refreshing this time of year. Riding temperatures can be so much more comfortable than in the summer heat. There is something about the smell of the falling leaves that makes it so inviting to be outdoors. You can truly justify wearing leather – Leather looks cool. And milder temperatures make it much more comfortable to wear. So strap on the chaps, pull on the leather gloves, and don your toughest-looking leather jacket. You’ll be comfortable and look sharp. And of course, not to mention the added safety benefits of wearing leather. Eric Merrell THE MAGNIFICENCE OF RIDING IN THE COLORADO MOUNTAINS You can grab a a last chance to ride – For those that live in parts of the country that don’t get to experience warm climates all year round, fall is the last chance for riding before it’s time for the bike to hibernate for the long winter. All those roads you still want to hit, all those buddies you still want to do a ride with……..do it now. It could be snowing soon. 5 Tips for Fall Riding: Top 5 Tips for Fall Motorcycle Riding 1 .Check the weather forecast – the weather can turn quickly this time of year, so be prepared and pack the rain gear Shorter days, longer shadows, cooler temperatures…..it’s autumn. Fall offers some great reasons to get out and ride: 2. Appropriate clothing – to stay warm and comfortable you may need gloves and a jacket It’s a great time to check out the scenery – Fall provides an amazing palette with the turning leaves. Some of the best roads to ride are often in areas where there are a lot of hills and trees that are the perfect canvas for autumn colors. Nature’s artwork is 4. Deer and Elk can be more active in the autumn – always be on the lookout for wildlife 3. Watch for wet leaves – wet leaves are slippery so be cautious of the road conditions Pike peak HOG #405 JUL/AUG 2013 Activities programs. The ABC of Touring and Mileage program. The National side of Harley Davidson also has two ride Riding Tips By Bill Kasper-Road Captain & Old Rider I ride a 2005 Road King Classic It happened on the 5-in-1, the last right hand switch back on the Breckenridge side of Hoosier Pass, I went down. First, the only thing that was hurt was my pride and my wallet. I scuffed my bike, my chaps, my mesh jacket, and my helmet. I’m not sure exactly what happened, because my mind was wandering and was I wasn’t thinking about the ride. I have 65,000 mile on my 2005 Road King Classic and I have ridden Hoosier Pass many times. I ended up doing what I tell riders not to do. One, I do know I was going into that switch back way to fast. Two, I didn’t want to ride over the newly painted reflected double yellow lines (which can be slippery when new). Three, I was looking at those double yellow lines right in front of the bike and not through the turn. The next thing I know, I’m riding the bike down. With the help of some other riders and a driver, we got the bike up and I surveyed the damage and determined the bike and I were in good enough shape to continue the ride. I finished the 5-in-1. When riding your bike keep your mind on the ride. This accident was a result of rider error and would not have happened if I had been concentrating on the ride. This is a good time to discuss mechanical failures. I have not experienced any of these failures. I religiously maintain my bike. The following is from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). Blowouts 1-Do not use the brakes if you can avoid it. If you have to brake apply gradual pressure on the good tire and ease over to a safe spot to stop. 2-Ease off the throttle and slow down gradually (Rapid deceleration could cause lose of control). 3-Hold the handlebars firmly (The bike is going to shudder). If you run good quality tires; maintain proper tire pressure; and change them when thr tread is worn, chances of a blowout are small. Stuck Throttle All motorcycles have a cut-off switch by your right thumb. If the throttle should stick hit the cut-off switch at the same time pull in the clutch. Pull over to a safe spot to stop. Chances are this will never happen. Broken Clutch Cable You’re riding down the highway and you want to change gears, you pull in the clutch lever and there is no return action. The clutch lever just lies against the handle grip. This is no fun, but not dangerous. By matching the speed with engine rpm’s, you can shift without the clutch. A tachometer makes this easy. If you try this and you grind gears, stop. Just back off the throttle and attempt to find neutral or prepare for a jerky stop. Brake Failure Your front and rear brakes are on separate systems the odds of loosing both is astronomical. I you one system use the other to stop. Remember the front brake provides approximately 70% of the stopping force and the rear brake provides approximately 30% of the stopping force, so bake accordingly. Drive Belt/Chain If you break a drive belt or chain, coast to a safe spot to pull off the road. You’re not going any ware. Oil Pressure Light/Gauge If your oil pressure light turns on or your oil pressure gauge indicates no oil pressure, quickly find a safe spot to pull off the road and turn off the engine. The longer the engine runs without oil pressure, the chances for engine damage increase. Temperature Light/Gauge If your temperature light turns on or your temperature gauge indicates high temperature, quickly find a safe spot to pull off the road and turn off the engine (Temperature light or temperature gauge are common on water cooled engines, i.e. H-D V-Rod.) The longer the engine runs at high temperature, the chances for engine damage increase. If you have taken the New Riders class and would like to ride with one of the Road Captains to gain experience, we will be glad to ride with you. Contact me 719-4959867 or [email protected] and I’ll set you up. Remember, this is a sport and it’s not how many years you have ridden, it’s how many miles. Be safe riding and keep the rubber on the ground. About the Black Sheep: Black Sheep Harley-Davidsons for Christ is more than just a motorcycle club.
