Haley Patterson September 21, 2012 Earth Science Lab Demonstration EROSION AND WEATHERING BY MOUTH Objective: Students will understand how erosion and weathering occur and how the two are different. Materials: One bite size Snickers candy per student. Process: 1.) Give out a Snickers to each student. 2.) Tell the students to place the candy in their mouth but not to eat or chew it. 3.) Each student should write down what is occurring to the candy while in their mouth as it dissolves. Have the students keep observing the process until only the peanuts are left. (chemical weathering) 4.) Now that the dissolving process is complete, allow the students to chew and make note of how the peanuts are being broken down. (mechanical weathering) 5.) Allow students to swallow and observe how the Snickers was taken from their mouth. (erosion) What the lab shows: Difference between Erosion and Weathering Chemical and Mechanical Weathering
