COMPLETE EXAMPLES – AUTHORITY RECORDS
These examples represent a particular agency’s policies on the application of RDA instructions and are illustrative not
prescriptive. These examples sometimes reflect the application of optional additions to the instructions. They do not
show the application of alternatives to the instructions. Some of the identifiers have been devised. Access points, which
are not RDA elements, have been included in some examples because they are part of the RDA instructions. MARC
examples use MARC input conventions but non-sorting characters are not indicated. MARC examples show some data
that has no RDA equivalent.
Shaded rows indicate core elements. For core elements with multiple instances, only the first instance of the
element has been shaded. Elements that are core in certain circumstances, such as medium of performance
for a musical work with a title that is not distinctive, are also shaded.
+ Indicates elements which must be incorporated into the authorized access point. Elements that must be
incorporated into the authorized access point because of conflict or special instructions have explanatory
footnotes.
++ Indicates elements which could be incorporated into the authorized access point either because of conflict
or the application of optional additions.

The Romanovs were a dynasty that ruled Russia for three centuries, from 1613 until the
Russian Revolution in 1917. The Romanovs' name originated from Roman Yurev, whose
daughter, Anastasiya Romanovna, married Russian tsar Ivan IV (Ivan the Terrible). The
children of Anastasiya's brother Nikita adopted the name Romanov in honor of their
grandfather. Nikita's grandson, Michael, became the first Romanov tsar. The last
Romanov tsar was Nicholas II, who abdicated in 1917. The Romanovs were all executed
