Superhero Spellers is a successful spelling scheme which
removes the many problems associated with spelling tests.
Children are often reluctant to learn their spellings as there is
no motivation to get all their spellings correct. They may learn
them for the test, only to forget them the following week.
Superhero Spellers uses repetition to enable pupils to truly
learn how to spell common words that they use every day, as
well as words that are often difficult to remember. The
structure of the scheme motivates pupils to move through the
levels, creating a positive attitude towards the learning of the
spellings and the tests themselves.
Superhero Spellers is made up of 7 main clubs. These clubs
contain a large number of words, so each one is broken down
into levels. Each level has a group of words for the pupils to
learn for their test. Pupils are not expected to get all the
spellings in their level right at the first attempt as the lists are
long, however, they need to get all the spellings in their
level correct before they can move onto the next one. If they
fail to get all the words in that level correct they continue with
the same set of words they have been learning. This provides
the repetition that reinforces the correct spelling in the pupil's
minds and prevents them from forgetting the spelling of
those words in the future.
Certificates are given when pupils can correctly spell the words
from the level they are working on and they then move to the
next level within their club. When they have correctly spelt all
the words in the last level in their club they receive an end of
club certificate, which can be given out in assembly by the
Head Teacher. Pupils are highly motivated to move onto the
next level and are excited about the progress they make.

Testing
Superhero Spellers is a whole school scheme beginning at year
1, which involves all of the school carrying out their tests at
the same time. Each class teacher from year 1 through to year
6 is responsible for the testing of one complete club with the
support of their Teaching Assistant. Pupils move to the
classroom of the teacher who runs their club to receive their
test. The marking of tests is then done by the teacher and
Teaching Assistant who administer them, not the pupil’s own
class teacher.
Understanding of words from the tests
The higher level clubs contain words that the pupils may be
unfamiliar with, particularly younger children who have moved
through the clubs quickly. Learning these words will improve
their vocabulary, but in order to use these words in their own
speech and writing it is important that their meaning is
understood. It is therefore recommended that pupils carry
out activities linked to the words they are learning for their
spelling tests. These could be given as homework or as an
independent guided reading activity.
Moving through the levels
Some pupils are naturally more able spellers and will move
quickly through the scheme. In order to keep their
progress matched to the level of words they understand
and will use themselves, it is recommended that pupils are
not allowed to move onto the next club until they can
demonstrate they understand the words from the club
they have just completed. This is particularly important in
the higher level clubs. Pupils should be encouraged to use
their spelling words in their own work whenever possible.
