At Norwood we continue to strive to be the best we can be for all

Mrs. Linda Christie
We would like to personally thank our school community for the
work and support they provide for our students. It is very exciting and rewarding to be part of a great team of individuals
(parents, staff, & community members) whose focus is to do what
is best for kids. Thank you to our families who take the time to be
involved with their child’s education from reading nightly to
those who are actively involved in the school on a weekly basis.
A big welcome to our new teacher in the LAP classroom, Mr. G.
Hill. Mr. Hill comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and experience in working with students with diverse needs. Welcome to
the Norwood School Community!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Jodie Mattia

RABBIT HILL SKI REPORT
The ski and snowboard trip to Rabbit Hill this year
was a great success. Over 85% of all students in
grades 4 to 6 attended, which is a great indication
of student enjoyment of physical activity! Our Norwood students were very well received and they
enjoyed the ski experience very much! It was enjoyable to watch the students improve in their lessons, gaining confidence in both skiing and snowboarding. We were also proud of how they represented Norwood School with exceptional behavior.
We would like to thank Elan Heinrichs.
who transported student equipment to the hill for
us, and all other parents who came as supervisors.
When dealing with such large numbers of students,
we really appreciate our volunteers. Can’t wait
until next year—we will be participating again in
February 2016!

Personal wellness is as important for children as it
is for adults. A child’s wellness is multifaceted and
includes mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual
wellness. This view of personal wellness aligns
with the First Nations medicine wheel which teaches that all areas of the medicine wheel emotional,
mental, physical, and spiritual must be in balance
in order for an individual to be well and successful
academically. Here are some suggestions to help
you and your child improve personal wellness:
 Mental Wellness – Engage in activities that
stimulate you intellectually. Read a book, get
help from a tutor, or discuss a topic with a
friend that you are passionate about.
 Emotional Wellness – Learn to express emotions in a healthy and positive manner. Draw,
read, write, or seek help from a counselor, elder, or trusted individual.
 Physical Wellness – Ensure you and your child
gets plenty of rest, eats nutritious meals and
snacks, and exercises regularly. Children require a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate
exercise a day and they need 8 to 10 hours of
sleep each night. Go for a brisk walk, go skating, swimming, play soccer, etc.
 Spiritual Wellness-Connect your child to their
culture, celebrate religion, instill in your child
positive beliefs and values.

MARCH IS NUTRITION MONTH
Even one small change can improve the health of
our students. Why not change up the breakfast
routine?
Breakfast is an important meal to start the day.
Eating breakfast helps your child to be more alert
during the school day. In fact, kids who eat breakfast are more likely to do well in school and have a
healthy body weight.
Prepare a balanced breakfast by including at least
three of the four food groups from Canada’s Food
Guide. Here are some easy and quick breakfast
ideas:
-Whole grain English muffin with an apple
and glass of milk
-Whole wheat toast with peanut butter
and a banana
-Scrambled eggs and cheese on a whole
grain wrap
-Oatmeal topped with walnuts and strawberries
-Mixed cereal with milk – mix several high
fibre cereals and add some fruit
-Smoothie made with fruit, yogurt ,and
milk

BUILDING CHARACTER
The February monthly recognition assembly was
one of our big draws for Wal-Mart gift cards. Students who have received a yellow building character slip from December to February were placed
into the draw barrel. We will have one more large
draw at the May recognition assembly. The gift
cards are purchased out of funds generated from
recycled juice containers at our school. Congratulations to all our students for their positive choices!
The Star Group activity in February focused on
the positives we see in ourselves.
