Latitude and Longitude
▶
The lines of Longitude and Latitude are a way for people to find places on the globe.
▶
Latitude:
▶
▶
The lines of latitude are parallel to the Equator.
▶
Latitude is 0 degrees at the Equator and increases north and south to 90 degrees at the poles.
Longtitude:
▶
The lines of longitude are perpendicular to the Equator and cut the globe into hemispheres.
▶
Longtitude is 0 degrees at the Prime Meridian and increases east and west to 90 degrees towards the
international date line.
▶
Any spot on the globe can be located by the coordinates of the lines that match up to the spot.
▶
For example New York is at 40.7128oN, 74.0059oW.
Hemispheres
•
There are four hemispheres: the
North, East, South, and West.
•
The north and south are divided by
the Equator the east and west are
divided by the Prime Meridian.
•
We are in the north western
hemisphere.
Oceans
•
•
There are five oceans

The Southern Ocean

The Atlantic Ocean

The Pacific Ocean

The Indian Ocean, and
The Arctic Ocean.
Did you know the earth is
mostly covered in water?
We Are Here!
•
We have spent a lot of time
talking all about the parts of the
world, but maybe we should be
talking about where we are in the
world!
•
We all live in the continent of
North America, in the country
U.S.A and in the state of
Washington.
•
You can see Washington State,
USA marked in red on the map.
