Early Christians called Sunday the “eighth day,” since it was the day after the Sabbath and a day of resurrected life, the Lord’s Day. By the seventh century, people regarded the eight days after Easter Sunday as one great day, an octave, one glorious feast when people were forbidden to fast or kneel. In the seventh century, Pentecost acquired an Octave, too. Christmas didn’t claim the honor of a continuous feast, but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a feast of the motherhood of Mary, although for centuries until 1969 it was called the Feast of the Circumcision. Our reformed calendar follows the earlier tradition of celebrating Mary as Mother of God. Historically, the shawl ministry dates back centuries. New to St. Mark’s, our ministry will provide warmth and comfort to shut-ins, homebound, those in nursing homes or hospitals, etc. You can make a difference! Spirituality of Unity is based on living Jesus' prayer in our daily lives. One way to do this is by putting the Gospel into practice one verse at a time. This is done by living a verse of scripture given monthly in the Word of Life and sharing its impact on one's life. If you love to knit or crochet, join us. Can’t knit and want to help? We are accepting donations of yarn or funds to purchase yarn, size 11 knitting needles or size M, N, or P crochet hooks, Rosaries and zipper seal sandwich bags. Once we get a nice supply of shawls, we will have them blessed prior to accepting requests for distribution. There is a Word of Life monthly meeting, open to all desiring spirituality based on the Gospel message. Meetings are held on the third Sunday of each month, 3-5pm in the Guadalupe Room. Strangely, the tle that is most confusing to nonCatholics is the official one. When we call Mary the Mother of God, we are not saying that she somehow preceded God or is equal to God. We are simply recognizing that her human son Jesus is also the divine Son of God. Today's Gospel records one simple ac on of Mary: to keep these things in her heart. Even in this simple sentence we are given a good example of being a disciple. Like Mary, we need to both keep, or remember, what God has done, and to reflect on what we remember. First, how much do we remember about what God has done for us? How well do we know the stories of salvaon found in the scriptures? Do we recall the prayers God has answered, the guidance given, the love of God that others have shown us, the mes God has forgiven us? Second, how much do we reflect on what God has done? Even if we have many memories of God's goodness to us, we also need to pray over them and ask ourselves how we have changed because of what God has done. Do I forgive hurts more readily? Do I share my faith with my family or friends? Do I support my parish with my me or offerings? Let us ask God's help to imitate Mary by remembering and reflec ng. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. HEALING MASS OF THE FAMILY TREE with Overnight Adoration of THE BLESSED SACRAMENT January 18, 7pm January 19, 6:30am in the Day Chapel All are welcome! Come as you are to a rich evening of praise and worship, Mass, Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, and blessings of Sacramentals, with overnight Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Rosary of the Undoer of Knots with Prayer of the Precious Blood. Our event concludes at the 6:30am Mass. Prayer Teams available You are never late! For more information, contact Carmen Frankel at [email protected]. WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME! Thank you for joining St. Mark’s parish family for Mass today! Maybe you’re new to San Antonio or new to St. Mark’s. Maybe you’re even new to the Catholic Church. Maybe you have been away for a while, or perhaps you’re just visiting. No matter the case, if this is your first time here, we welcome you. When a new year begins, many of us look forward to starting fresh or anew. We look forward to new beginnings and implementing new approaches. We make New Year’s resolutions in hope that this year will be our best year ever—that “I will be the best me” ever. Among resolutions like eating healthier, exercising, and focusing on family, let us remember that the best “me” ever can only be realized by feeding our faith and our spirit. A couple of years ago, Most Rev. José H. Gomez, Archbishop of Los Angeles (and Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of San Antonio), suggested that “…the best New Year’s resolution we can make is to try to grow in our relationship with God” by making “Jesus the center of our lives” and “growing in our friendship with Jesus.” How can we do this, though? For some of us, eating healthier and exercising everyday seems a lot easier than growing our relationship with God, especially if we have been away from church for a while. The first step can simply be to ask God for the grace to ask for what you need to grow in spiritual life and to understand what He is asking you to do. If you are someone who hasn’t been to Mass in a while or hasn’t even prayed in a while, take comfort in that it is never too late to come back home to the Father. He welcomes you with open arms...and so does St. Mark’s. We are glad you’re here, and we will always have a place for you at the table. NEED TO REGISTER? Call or come by the pastoral office during regular business hours or by the church office on Saturday or Sunday between Masses. You can also register on the St. Mark’s website at www.stmarkevangelist.com under the About Us tab. “If up till now you have kept him at a distance, step forward. The blessing included in the First Reading from the Book of Numbers is one with which most of us are familiar. “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord let His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you…” In the Jewish culture this has been known for centuries as the Aaronic blessing as it was dictated by God Himself to Aaron. It is important to note that it begins with “The Lord bless you.” All blessings come from God. One error we make is to conclude that blessings always mean happiness or security or prosperity. God knows what blessings we need, even if we do not. The key for us is to be grateful for whatever blessings we may have. That mind set is at the hub of stewardship — knowing all blessings come from the Lord, and our need to be appreciative of them. To be “kept” by the Lord is to turn our lives over to Him, to know that He is with us and that He loves us, blesses us, and does indeed “keep” us ever in His care. The truth is that to be blessed by God is one of the greatest gifts we can receive. It is available to all of us without exception. During this continued Christmas season, it is well to remember and repeat the classic statement by the character Tiny Tim in Charles Dickens’ immortal A Christmas Carol: “God bless us, every one,” for certainly He does.
