In Viborg Municipality, we are almost 94,000 citizens and have about 53,000 workplaces – a strong community
right in the middle of the heart of Jutland. And people keep coming because we have a lot to offer – more than
most. With only an hour’s drive to the second largest city in Denmark, Aarhus, we are at the centre of things.
And via Karup Airport we can be in Copenhagen – and then in the rest of the world – in no time.
But it also works the other way around. More and more people from far and near come to Viborg Municipality.
Both because of our history and culture, our excellent sports facilities and the unique nature. But also because
our business community counts a number of large and prominent companies.
It is our vision to create “Will, Growth and Welfare” and this requires a dynamic, outward looking and targeted
effort. An effort which is based on and further develops Viborg Municipality’s uniqueness – and which is
centered round the citizens and their daily life.
You can explore this further on the following pages.

The Tree of Fortune
It is great to live in Viborg Municipality. Great to be and live in a place oozing energy and harmony – a place with
soul. Viborg is one of the oldest and most central cities in the country, located in the middle of a unique nature
with hills, lakes, river valleys and forests. Furthermore, in the countryside, vibrant local communities offer safe
and developing settings for a modern everyday life.
Bjerringbro is the other main town; beautifully located on both sides of the River Guden and here, like in Viborg,
you find a thriving retail trade. All types of housing are available in the municipality’s towns and villages.
Citizens and democracy are in focus everywhere. Viborg Municipality has, contrary to many municipalities, a
democracy committee and a citizens’ guide and a citizens’ advisor. As a recurrent event, we choose the ‘Local
Area of the Year’– for the benefit and joy of all of us.

In the Middle of History
Since the Viking Age, Viborg has been ‘the city in the middle’ – culturally, ecclesiastically and geographically.
Here, people paid homage to the King of the Danes on the ‘ting’, people stopped here on their pilgrimage to
Rome and it was the cradle of the Reformation.
The name Viborg is made up of ‘Vi’ (holy place) and ‘bjerg’ (mountain) and together, these two words make
Viborg ‘the holy mountain’, the mountain of offerings. Whether the ‘mountain’ is the fascinating hillock by
the lake or the somewhat higher plateau, where Viborg Cathedral thrones today, is not known. But since the
beginning of time, people have come to Viborg to worship their gods. Today, Viborg is, if not the centre of
power, still rather central. Domicile of the High Court of Western Denmark and of the Central Denmark Region.
The Viborg region oozes history. King Harthacnut, Erik Glipping, Hans Tausen, Bishop Gunner, St Kjeld, Steen
Steensen Blicher and Jens Longknife are only a handful of the famous people associated with the municipality.

Will to Grow
It is good to run a business in Viborg Municipality. We have a targeted enterprise policy that makes it possible
for us to offer attractive settings for business development and increased growth. We are very focused on
attracting new national and international research, educations and businesses to the municipality and on
developing the relations between the business community, the educational institutions and the Municipality.
Viborg Municipality is characterised by having many large private and public companies and there is a strong
focus on international cooperation and involvement. But also the smaller companies benefit from the business
climate in the municipality. Very efficient advice and assistance to new businesses have

places. This, among other things, is why Viborg in 2010 had the honour of being chosen
2010
as ‘The Entrepreneur City of the Year’.
Do you work in Viborg Municipality and would like to move here, then we will lend you a helping hand. We offer a
housing guarantee to commuters with more than 30 minutes’ transport.

A Textbook Example
Many young people come to Viborg Municipality. Because of our dynamic research and education environment
– and because of our attitude towards Danish and international students. We offer a wide range of both youth
and further and higher educations – as well as a range of unique educations. The Animation Workshop enjoys a
strong international reputation and also the International School helps put Viborg on the world map.
The House of Natural Sciences in Bjerringbro offers future-oriented teaching in natural sciences; and within
research, the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences’ largest unit, Research Centre Foulum, is worth highlighting.
But also the physical surroundings are important. Therefore, we have introduced a housing guarantee for
students and we have created Campus Viborg VIA University College. An ‘educational city’ for 1,500 students
which is located within the former Viborg Barracks area and houses the Nursing College, the Business Academy
and the Kinder Garden Teacher Training College.

In Viborg Municipality we make a big deal out of the youngest. We have decided to become ‘the municipality of
children and children’s culture’ and ensure the best settings for a safe, good and enriching upbringing. We are
already well on our way. With versatile day care offers, day care guarantee and a multitude of activities and
cultural offers for children.
By nature we are also child friendly. The unique surroundings offer an abundance of experiences and it is not
difficult to find a destination for family outings.
It’s for Children

In Viborg Municipality, everything in relation to children’s culture is in play. Led by Kulturprinsen – the
development centre for children’s culture – and the Children’s Culture Joint Council, the possibilities are endless.
Drama School, School of Painting and Drawing, Film Club and a myriad of holiday activities. In Carte Blanche, the
municipality has its own regional theatre for children and there is a special child friendly portal on viborg.dk/
boernekultur (in Danish only).

It is no coincidence that green is the dominant colour in Viborg Municipality’s graphic identity. We have an
exceptional nature which we do everything in our power to protect. And we continuously work on developing a
healthy and green environment for our citizens. The Municipality’s Disease Prevention and Health Policy is part
of this work.
We are many runners in Viborg Municipality and this is not so strange. The landscape calls for outdoor
activities. Our nature is magnificent and counts among other things 20 lakes, the River Guden, Karup River,
Hjarbæk Fjord, Kongenshus Heath, Dollerup Hills and Ulbjerg Cliff plus parks, green areas and leisure facilities
en masse.

Winning Culture
12
The best home ground in the world is located within Viborg Stadium Centre. This is where Viborg HK’s women’s
handball team for the first time in 2006 could lift the trophy as winners of the Champions League and thus laying the
foundation for countless championships including three EHF European Cup victories and two more Champions League
victories in 2009 and 2010.
Also in Bjerringbro, they contribute to the winning culture when the men’s handball team from BSV runs onto the
court. And speaking of running, you will get plenty of exercise possibilities at the annual Viborg City Marathon and at
all the other running events. If you prefer a slower pace, the Hærvejsmarch is just the thing. This well-known march
brings together thousands of exercise loving Danes and foreigners every year.
Included in the cultural activities is Paletten, Viborg’s popular music venue. And also Viborg Theatre, Viborg Music
Hall, cinemas, museums, galleries, the Arts Gallery Brænderigården, Tinghallen – the city’s conference and music hall Gudenåhuset and the many community centres offer activities all year round.
In Viborg Municipality we offer sports and cultural events at all levels. Historical plays, international performances
and small intimate concerts. You can find them all in the activity calendar on Viborg.dk/detSKER (in Danish only).

Viborg Municipality is in the middle. In the middle of a rapid development both when it comes to the growing
population and to the innovative drive – both out of the ordinary. But also idyllically located in the middle of
nature – nature is everywhere, even in the middle of Viborg City.
Viborg Municipality is located in the middle of Jutland where you can reach many places and attractions within
an hour. Here you also find Karup Airport from which you can reach the rest of the world.
