How does sex figure in the historical record? What traces of sex and desire can we find in the archive? Will we recognize it when we find it? When we focus on racialized sexualities, how do we analyze uneven power relations without eliminating the possibility of pleasure? How do we as contemporary scholars understand desire and pleasure historically without imposing contemporary categories, priorities, and sexual structures on the past? In this paper Peña poses these questions drawing on her previous work on Cuban American gay and transgender communities (including Oye Loca: From the Mariel Boatlift to Gay Cuban Miami, University of Minnesota Press, 2013). In addition, the paper explores examples from a new project tentatively entitled “Desiring Gaze: Race, Sexuality, and Cuba-U.S. Relations” that examines the diverse ways that race and sexuality played into U.S.-Cuba relations and our national imaginaries. Co-sponsored by Department of Gender Studies, Department of English, Latino Studies Program, College of Arts and Sciences, and New Queer Imaginaries Lecture Series.
