CODE 1337 PG-16 NON-EXEMPT HARDWARE TECHNICIAN (Information Technology) Must have the physical, developmental and mental ability to perform job tasks, work efforts, responsibilities and duties of the job illustrated. MAJOR FUNCTION Primary Function: Responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of personal computer hardware including stand-alone units, and those on local area networks, and wide area networks. Secondary Function: Perform advanced technical work in operating a variety of Data Center computer equipment and systems. Required to make independent decisions accordingly and is subjected to working second shift. ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES Primary Duties – Hardware Technician Install or upgrade personal computer hardware as necessary. Receive and respond to service calls regarding hardware problems. Provide on-going assistance to end-users regarding hardware questions and operational needs. Ensure that personal computer hardware and related equipment are maintained in a good state of repair. Troubleshoot, recommend, and take corrective action as appropriate Assist PC Coordinators with PC/Laptop setups, imaging and installations Make all necessary arrangements for equipment installation upon delivery of hardware products. Complete work tickets within established timeframes. Assist IT Service Desk as required. Provide training and support services to personal computer users. Assist with development of PC hardware standards. Responsible for self-education and general knowledge of new/improved personal computer hardware and software. Performs related duties as required. Secondary Duties - Data Center Monitors and operates various computer systems using advanced operating systems such as: IBM Mainframe Systems, Mid-range Systems, local and remote teleprocessing controllers, data lines, and terminals. CODE 1337 PG-16 NON-EXEMPT HARDWARE TECHNICIAN (Information Technology) (Continued) Secondary Duties - Data Center (continued) Operates Laser Printing Systems (i.e. forms design, download, customize, compile and catalog maps), Intranet and Internet Systems, PC, Client Server Systems, and Network communications systems. Operates peripheral equipment as required: (i.e.: line printers, lasers printers, bursters, decollators, tape drives, cartridge tape drives, cassette drives, and CD drives). Schedules, submits, and assures that jobs run in proper sequence. Maintains the Job Schedule and Job Submission Tables. Checks and assures that each job has completed properly. Schedules, keys request data, verifies entered data, submits jobs and distributes reports for user requests. Performs backup, de-fragmentation upload, download, and reorganization of data sets. Participates in the development of operations procedures and production schedules. Performs related duties as required. KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS Knowledge of standard personal computer hardware and related equipment used within the county. Knowledge of a wide variety of personal computer hardware. Must be able to communicate effectively with end-users, IT staff, and vendor support personnel. Ability to install various software packages on personal computers. Must be able to work independently and solve problems effectively and creatively. Must have the ability to see, write, and perform data entry keying efforts. Ability to concentrate on detail and sequential work tasks. Ability to speak in a manner that can be understood. Ability to sit for long periods. Ability to bend, stoop, sit, and stand. Ability to perform tasks that require eye and hand coordination. Ability to research, investigate, experiment, detect, inspect, verify, recognize, and recommend personal computing solutions. Ability to perform preventive maintenance and troubleshoot repairs on personal computer systems. Ability to train others on various PC related duties both hardware and software. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and officials. Ability to use independent judgment and make analytical recommendations. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. CODE 1337 PG-16 NON-EXEMPT HARDWARE TECHNICIAN (Information Technology) (Continued) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Graduate from an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma. Minimum of one (1) year experience in end-user support that includes trouble-shooting and repair of personal computers. Must possess knowledge of standard personal computer hardware and software including the ability to perform repair, problem determination, and resolution. Must have a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment within this classification. A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must provide and utilize personal transportation in daily travel to remote sites to perform service calls. Must have a home telephone within thirty (30) days of employment in this classification as employee is subject to call out. This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County. SPECIAL PREFERENCES The preferred applicant will have experience with County Government, specifically dealing with Polk County personal computer use and computer operations. Primary - A+ Certification, personal computers, PC operating systems, Windows, and client servers operating Microsoft Windows 2000/2003 Server.
