Geometry Section 11.2 Day 1
Surface Area of a Prism
Name:_______________________
Date:_____________ Period:_____
Target Goals:
1. To find the surface area of a prism.
2. To find the surface area of a cylinder
VOCABULARY:
Prism –
Bases –
Lateral Faces -
Altitude/Height –
Naming a Prism:
Prisms can be either RIGHT (Straight up and down) or OBLIQUE (“tilted”)
Right lateral faces are rectangles and the lateral edge is its altitude.
Lateral Area:
L.A. = (perimeter of base)(height)
Surface Area:
S.A. = (Lateral Area) + (Area of 2 bases)
FINDING SURFACE AREA with NETS:
1.) Use the net to find the surface area of the prism.
2.) Draw a net of the following prism and find the surface area.
GUESS WHAT!? We can come up with a formula for the LATERAL AREA and SURFACE area
of a prism just by looking at its net.
NOTE: You can use these formulas for the LA and SA of ANY RIGHT PRISM!
FINDING SURFACE AREA with FORMULAS
1.) Find the prism’s surface area using the formulas given.
SA =
SA =
SA =
2.) Find the surface area of the following prism using the formulas above.
SA =

SA =
3.) Find the surface area of a 10cm high right prism with triangle bases having 18cm edges.
Round to the nearest whole number.
4.) Use a net to find the surface area of the provided prism.
5.) A hexagonal pencil is a hexagonal prism. A base edge of the pencil has length 4mm. The
pencil (without an eraser) has height 170mm. How much surface area of a hexagonal pencil gets
painted?
4.) Find the lateral area and surface area of the prism using the formulas above.
