GEOMETRY C D E F G Had a look Nearly there Nailed it! 3-D shapes You need to learn the names of these 3-D shapes. Cuboid Square-based pyramid Cube Cylinder Tetrahedron Triangular prism Cone Sphere Drawing 3-D shapes Faces, edges and vertices This square-based pyramid has 5 faces, 8 edges and 5 vertices. The plural of vertex is vertices. You can use isometric paper to draw a 3-D shape. Face Vertex Edge grade This shape is made from 4 cubes. Make sure the isometric paper is the right way up vertical lines down the page and no horizontal lines. G (a) Write down the name of each of these two 3-D shapes. (i) (ii) Cuboid Tetrahedron (b) Write down the number of edges on shape (i). Only about half of students got part (a) correct. You need to remember the names of the different 3-D shapes. For part (b) you can sketch the hidden edges to help you work out the answer. This was a real exam question that caught students out – be prepared! 12 1. Write down the mathematical name for each of these 3-D shapes. (b) (a) 2. Here is a diagram of a prism. grade E (c) grade G (3 marks) Lia says that E 2 F V where E is the number of edges, F is the number of faces and V is the number of vertices. Is Lia correct? Explain why. (3 marks) 70 M03_EMFL_REV_GCSE_0178_U03.indd 70 4/8/11 15:05:12
