One Solitary Life
He was born in an obscure village
The child of a peasant woman.
He grew up in another obscure village
Where he worked in a carpenter shop.
When He was thirty the tide of public opinion turned
against him.
He never wrote a book,
He never held an office,
He never went to college,
He never visited a big city,
He never travelled more than two hundred miles
From the place where he was born,
He did none of the things
Usually associated with greatness
He had no credentials but himself.
He was only thirty three.
His friends ran away
One of them denied him.
He was turned over to his enemies
And went through the mockery of a trial.
He was nailed to a cross between two thieves.
While dying, his executioners gambled for
The only property he had on earth; his coat.
When he was dead
He was laid in a borrowed grave
Through the pity of a friend.
Nineteen centuries have come and gone
And today Jesus is the central figure of much of the
human race
And the leader of mankind's progress.
All the armies that have ever marched;
All the navies that have ever sailed;
All the parliaments that have ever sat;
All the kings that ever reigned
Put together
Have not affected the life of mankind on this earth
As powerfully as has that one solitary life.
FROM THE
ADMINISTRATOR
We have entered into the
holiest week of the year.
In the days ahead we
commemorate and reenact the saving events of
the Paschal Mystery: the
passion,
death
and
Resurrection of Our Lord.
This is the central Mystery
of our faith and these are,
by far, the most important
days in the whole liturgical
calendar. I urge all of you
to enter into them in a
spirit
of
prayer,
repentance and humility. We stand before the Lord who
suffered and sacrificed Himself for us. He died that we
might live.
The schedule of the liturgies in the coming week can be
found in the box on the opposite page. While the Sacred
Triduum are not holy days of obligation you are invited and
encouraged to participate in as many of them as you are
able. Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are
really celebrated like one giant three-day liturgy.
If you desire to receive the Sacrament of Penance prior to
Easter your final opportunity will be this coming
Wednesday, March 23. The Blessed Sacrament will be
exposed for adoration in the church and there will be five
priests available to hear Confessions in English and
Spanish from 7:15-8:00PM. Again, these are the last
Confessions before Easter. There will be no Confessions
heard at St. Joseph again until April 16th.
I would also like to point out that on Good Friday the
Stations of the Cross will be prayed at 7:00PM in Spanish
only. The only other time for liturgical prayer in the church
that day will be the Solemn Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion at
3:00PM.
I also feel that it is necessary to remind you that Good
Friday is a day of abstinence when meat must not be eaten
AND it is also a day of strict fasting just like on Ash
Wednesday. It is a nice custom, but not mandatory, to
observe what is called the Great Easter Fast. Lent officially
ends on the afternoon of Holy Thursday. However, many
people observe strict fasting and abstinence all day on
Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday as a
further preparation for Easter. It is a good custom and a
holy one but it is NOT mandatory; it is voluntary. This is
different from the fasting and abstinence that must be
observed by everyone on Good Friday. On that day it is
mandatory!
My prayer for all of you is that you will have a happy and
blessed Holy Week filled with inspiration and
prayerfulness. In addition, I pray that you and yours may
be abundantly blessed with the joy of Christ’s
Resurrection!
