LADIES CLUB NEWS Edition #1, Wed. March 29, 2017 Page 1 MARK YOUR CALENDARS The year ahead offers so much to enjoy, but it’s hard to keep track of it all. Here are some important events to note on your calendar. In some cases you need to sign up in advance* of the dates shown here so watch for those important dates. Spring Meeting March 28 at 6:30pm (1830) Bill Matticks’s Restaurant Swing into Spring* Cordova Bay Golf Course Black and White* Tuesday April 11 OPEN FOR REGISTRATION NOW Sunday May 21 Summer Solstice* Sunday July 2 Cordova Bay Golf Course Golf Week early July (proposed) Cordova Bay Golf Course Club Championship* Saturday and Sunday, Sept 9, 10 Cordova Bay Golf Course Cordova Bay Golf Course *Be sure to sign up for events early. In order to handle all the planning that goes into the events, the Committee needs to know how many people are interested with sufficient lead time to facilitate blocking out tee times on the course and providing space in the restaurant. You can always withdraw if you must. For more information, go to the Cordova Bay website, Members’ Area, under Ladies Club Information and, down at the bottom look at Quick Links. Scroll to the Fixtures List. Mark the sign-up dates in your calendar. Ways to find out what’s happening? This newsletter (published about once per month.) Posters in the Ladies Locker Room. Chalk Board on Hole #1 on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Your Executive Committee members. Ask in the Pro Shop. OPENING DAYS APRIL 4TH AND 8TH Our season starts on Tuesday April 4 and Saturday April 8. Play both days if you want. For the first few weeks, you will be assigned a group, within a time period you specify, with the idea of giving you a chance to play with new people. Mix it up a bit. After that, groups can form themselves by submitting a request for a certain time period. There are always lots of openings for single players. Of course, groups ebb and flow as players juggle busy schedules and holidays and all the other things that happen in life. When you submit a time request, keep in mind that several groups may have asked for the same time slot, so stay flexible and you’ll be out playing within a few slots of your request. As summer approaches, tee times are offered earlier which adds more opportunity to play when you prefer. FASHION SHOW Cordova Bay does a great job of finding and showing for sale good quality golf clothing and gear at reasonable prices. AND, members enjoy discounts. How good is that? Each Spring, our Dorothy Bell scours the market for new good stuff and then arranges a fashion show to showcase the new season. This year, the show will be part of the Spring Meeting on March 28, details above. NEW TO THE LADIES’ CLUB? As I write this newsletter, I realize a new Member has a lot to learn about the Club and all its activities. Many of us may have golfed before but never had a chance to participate in a Members’ group. We all had lives to lead. Now’s your chance. To make learning a less haphazard experience, the Exec Committee has decided to match each new member with an Executive Committee Member for the first few weeks of play. Not only will that help a new member experience Tuesday and Saturday golf in a more comfortable way, but it will give everyone a chance to ask questions. And the ExecCom Member can offer lots of info about everything from the Eclectic to the Foster’s Cup to Interclub to signup routines – all that stuff! LADIES CLUB NEWS NEW DROP ZONE Hole #13 gobbles golf balls. Swing, splash, off to the Drop Zone. Darn ponds. And the big fenced tree, with the old well at its feet. Formerly, the drop zone was located near the fenced off area on the right as you approach the green. This year, the drop zone will be located on the left. So you’ll walk up the right side as usual, (unless you’re hitting from the Bald Eagle (white) Tees or the Hummingbirds (red) Tees have been moved to the west side of the pond) and then find the drop area on the left. Moving the Drop Area should give you more flexibility, but does bring the bunkers into play. The change has been made in the interests of improving speed of play. By the way, don’t be tempted to go inside the fenced area. There’s an old well in there. While not deep, you would not have a pleasant experience if you stepped into it! Edition #1, Wed. March 29, 2017 Page 2 BIRDIES, CHIP-INS, BREAK 100, 90, 80 Each Ladies’ Day, whether Tuesday or Saturday, keep track of your birdies and chip-ins by recording them on the signup sheet in the Ladies’ Locker Room. Ask one of your foursome to attest the fact. Then at year end, cash prizes with be awarded to those with the highest number of each, on a flighted basis. When you break 100, 90, or 80, for the first time ever while playing in a Ladies’ Club day or event, you earn a pin to celebrate your accomplishment. Please record the new low score in the Locker Room and have it attested. The pin looks great on your hat or your shirt! MORE EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES YOU CAN SIGN UP FOR Throughout the season, there are activities and events in addition to the Competitions described elsewhere in this newsletter. Some have a small entrance fee. Examples are: Interclub play: Team play between clubs, running from about April 1 into October Eclectic competition: A chance to use your best score of the season on a hole by hole basis to win (see more info below.) Foster’s Cup: Match play Road to Crown Isle: Play a lot, earn points, enjoy a great weekend at Crown Isle Weekly Competitions: Almost every Tuesday and Saturday, there’s a competition, just for fun, for a variety of skills (or luck.) e.g., longest drive, and closest to the pin (KP). Win a golf ball (to replace the one you fired into the water.) Watch for the signup sheets on the bulletin board at the entrance of the Ladies Locker Room or at the Spring Meeting. THE ECLECTIC TOURNAMENT, called simply the ECLECTIC Puzzled by the poster in the Ladies locker area titled “The Eclectic?” Want to know how it works? How to participate? The simple answer is that an eclectic, or eclectic tournament, is a multi-round golf tournament that results in one 18-hole score per player. The Eclectic at Cordova Bay runs over the summer season, winding up around the end of September. Participants enter their scores each week, and then at the end of the season, check for their lowest score on each of the 18 holes, and then add those up for an 18 hole score. The winners post the lowest score calculated on this basis in flighted groups. For example, let's say the eclectic tournament is made up of three rounds. (Ours goes for much longer, giving you many chances.) For hole No. 1, the player shoots 6 in Round 1, a 7 in Round 2, and a 4 in Round 3. The lowest of those three scores on the first hole is a 4, so that’s the golfer's eclectic score for that hole. In other words, the golfer compares her scores on each hole in every round of the eclectic, selects the lowest per hole score, and that is her eclectic scorecard. The best part? Other than turn in your card, you don’t have to do a thing! The Sports Chair takes care of it all. Sweet! But you must sign up in advance of the competition to participate. Generally, the registration closes about mid-April. Watch this newsletter and other sources of information for a firm date. DON’T WANT TO KEEP SCORE? Golfing isn’t just about competing. It’s about being out in a beautiful place, enjoying friends, and getting some exercise too. So, if you would rather not score or compete, that’s just fine. Be sure to mark your score card “not participating” when you turn it in at the end of the round, though. However, if you do want to compete, record a score for each game to ensure your Factor (and therefore your Handicap for any given course) is up to date. Need help getting started? Ask anyone of us on the ExecComm for help and we’ll show you how. Sue Ovans - Ladies Club Captain LADIES CLUB NEWS Edition #1, Wed. March 29, 2017 Page 3 A BIG THANK YOU Each year, the Ladies’ Club selects a charity which they support by sharing some of the funds generated by each event. Last year, we supported KampsforKids. Here’s a message from our member Roberta Williston: “To the Executive and Members of the Cordova Bay Ladies Club: On behalf of the children who have benefited, and those who will benefit in the future, of the opportunity of going to Summer Camp, I would like to wholeheartedly thank you all for your generosity over the past year. Thank you to the Executive for choosing KampsforKids and to all you wonderful ladies who contributed over and above the club contributions. This has given our fund a huge boost and we look forward to being able to make next summer much more memorable for a greater number of children who would not otherwise be able to go to summer camp. With much appreciation Roberta and Fred Williston, Kamp for Kids EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Members of your hard working Executive Committee for this coming year are listed below.
