Census 2010 Fact Sheet - Hennepin County Households and Family Types
Introduction
A household consists of all the
people who occupy a housing unit,
regardless of their relationship
to each other. A household may
include related family members
and all the unrelated people, if
any, living in the housing unit or it
may consist of a single person.1
There are two major categories
of households, “family” and
“nonfamily”. The U.S. Census
Bureau defines a family as a
household consisting of two or
more people related by birth,
marriage or adoption.
Changes in Hennepin County household composition
• This is a 4.3 percent change
from the 2000 household count,
but a smaller increase than the
change that occurred between
the 1990 and 2000 Censuses
(8.8%).
• The number of households
in Hennepin County stood at
475,913 in the 2010 Census.
• Although they comprise only 2
percent of the total households
in 2010, male-headed single
parent families with children
under age 18 nearly doubled
from 5,335 in 1990 to 10,111 in
2010, a 90 percent change.
