Some comparisons in household composition are made to the 1990 and/or 2000 Censuses. The percentage of households that are occupied by a single person age 65 or older has held steady around 9 percent since 1990, even though the number of those households increased from 37,466 to 42,657. A household may include related family members and all the unrelated people, if any, living in the housing unit or it may consist of a single person.1 There are two major categories of households, “family” and “nonfamily”. The U.S. Census Bureau defines a family as a household consisting of two or more people related by birth, marriage or adoption. Changes in Hennepin County household composition • This is a 4.3 percent change from the 2000 household count, but a smaller increase than the change that occurred between the 1990 and 2000 Censuses (8.8%). • The number of households in Hennepin County stood at 475,913 in the 2010 Census. • Although they comprise only 2 percent of the total households in 2010, male-headed single parent families with children under age 18 nearly doubled from 5,335 in 1990 to 10,111 in 2010, a 90 percent change. Family households • The largest subgroup of family households is married couples without children under age 18, comprising between 41 and 42 percent of all families in Hennepin County since 1990. Their Under 18 by Census 2010 numbers increased from 32,877 in 1990 to 42,836 in 2010, a 30 percent change. The youngest age group, under age 35, comprises about 14 percent of both racial groups. The largest proportion of homeowners is the 45 to 54 age group, around 28 percent for both racial groups, with declining proportions for the two older groups. • The white, non-Hispanic homeowners have a somewhat different age pattern than the other groups in that there isn’t much decline in the proportion of the older age groups. The three older age categories comprise nearly equal proportions (between 22% and 25%) of homeowners. • Over 44 percent of white homeowners were age 55 or older in 2010. People less than 35 years of age comprise over 20 percent of homeowners for these two groups, which is higher than what is found in the other racial groups. The largest proportion of homeowners is found in the age group 35 to 44 years, over 32 percent for both Asians and Hispanics.
