Carla Lane Animals In Need Autumn 2013 Newsletter

Carla Lane Animals In Need
Autumn 2013 Newsletter
Dear Friends,
It’s the season of Autumn mist and mellow days, the nights are drawing in. All our lovely trees
LYNX
at the sanctuary are laden with berries ready to feed the hungry birds & wildlife this winter. The
damsons, plums and blackberries have all been harvested and turned into delicious homemade
jams by our clever baker Norma Richardson. She has made dozens of jars of jam and also lovely
marmalade using a box of donated oranges. Nothing is wasted. It’s now ready to sell to raise
funds for the sanctuary. Please feel free to request a jar. We now have to prepare for winter by
ordering the fuel oil to keep the animals snug & warm and the hay & straw for the farm animals
and donkeys. The winter is always hard for the animals and our running cost rise significantly.
It seems everything has risen in price, so extra fundraising is the order of the day. We never
stop with so many hungry mouths.
Update on special care unit. The final costs are in for the unit and we have an excellent builder to undertake the project.
It will take a good 6 months and the start date has been set for 6th January 2014. We desperately need this special unit.
It will house the most needy animals, like Zippy the kitten and others who come to us in an appalling condition. Noisy
kennels are not the best environment for sick and injured animals or frightened nursing mums and pups. Tara and her
babies (see below) are thriving thanks to round the clock care of Manager Cathy Billington. She took them into her own
home to tend their needs. Tara came to us very poorly, she had a neglected condition , a septic womb and she had been
trying to make a burrow in the garden to have her puppies. She had 8 in all but sadly 2 died at birth. The puppies are
approaching 6 weeks old and are needing good permanent homes. They are adorable.
LYNX is another very sad case. He was rescued from a pound in the south of England where he was up for destruction.
This poor boy has been through a terrible ordeal after swallowing a large piece of leather which blocked his bowel.
Thanks to the skills of our very good vet, he is now on the way to a full recovery and will also need a loving home. Both
these cases would have benefited from us having the special care facility. Lynx had to spend time in his kennel and was
very traumatised. We are very grateful to all of you who have donated towards the unit, we still
have a shortfall but are confident we will meet our target. It’s a huge project as well as the special
care element, we are providing much needed pest free storage, a large functional utility area, a
disabled friendly reception and meeting rooms where people can be introduced to dogs when the
weather is very bad. There will also be a overnight stay area, providing 24 hour care for sick
animals. We welcome donations towards the unit and are asking people to sponsor one of our
hospital pens and we will be providing plaques to recognise all who donate and our ‘Buy A Brick’
forms will be laminated & displayed throughout the building. Get your name on our ‘Wall of Fame’.
For those of you who showed an interest and supported our ‘Free Remy’
ZIPPY
campaign, you will be pleased to know that she is now home with her
LIVERPOOL
family. Thank you to Rose & Georgie Billinge and Helen Stanbury,
trustee of Freshfields Animal Rescue for all their support.
I know it has been said before, but we really couldn’t carry on without your support.
Thank you for helping us save all these worthy lives.
With kind regards

CAT OUTWORK TEAM NEED YOU
It’s hard to remember the grim days of March with
freezing rain and wind chill temperatures below zero. Six
kittens were struggling to survive in an overgrown garden
in Spinney Road, Kirkby. They were starving and two had collapsed
with hypothermia. The owner had left the kittens to their fate when
he moved. All recovered after weeks of intensive care. Three have
now gone to Happy Endings in Kent for re-homing. Thank you to
Chris, Terry & Liz.
As the weather improved the kitten season gathered momentum and
calls came in thick and fast including one from commuters at Kirkby
Station. A mum and kittens living in the brambles on the embankJUDY BOTTLE FEEDING
AN ORPHANED KITTEN
ment. It took many days and nights to trap her with her kittens.
We nicked named them ‘the Railway Children’. They are all now safe
in comfortable caring homes. It’s hard work but it pays off.
There were so many more kittens to be helped but little Dougal’s plight was memorable. Poor
little mite was under 4 weeks old when he was found on the roundabout by Ashworth Hospital.
For those of you who remember the Magic Roundabout that is how he got his name. He has been
fortunate to find an excellent home in West Kirby with his friends Zebedee & Dillon.
We dealt with litter after litter. It was heartbreaking. We brought as many as we could into the
sanctuary, concentrating on the most vulnerable. Three tiny black bundles, still unweaned were
recovered from a local livery yard when staff caught a man ditching them at the gate. We have
been bottle-feeding for weeks a long arduous but very rewarding task. It really is wonderful to
see them thrive and to experience the kinder side of human nature. Many of the kittens were
stricken by cat flu, which made nursing them even harder. It is a huge work load but we could
never turn these needy little kittens away.
We are always looking for people to help with the nursing of kittens, although tiring it is an
uplifting experience. You too can save lives. Please contact the Sanctuary to offer help.
Everything you need with be provided. Foster carers also needed for cats and kittens that
can look after themselves but need a temporary place to stay.
NEWS FROM OUR FRIENDS AT HAPPY ENDINGS RESCUE
As you already know we have many of Carla Lane Animals In Need animals
residing at Happy Endings in Kent. They are looked after by Liz who does a
fantastic job. All the team at Happy Endings work tirelessly to help the many
horses saved from the meat market and those due for live export. The
GOATS AT HAPPY ENDINGS RESCUE
Happy Endings team also assist us with wildlife and feral cats. They have
recently come up to us to collect injured pigeons and 9 ferals who have now settled in well.
Liz’s Blog—We have been very busy with rehoming which is wonderful after such a slow start. Since Jan we
have found homes for 102 dogs, 98 cats, 49 horses and donkeys and 48 rabbits not to mention numerous farm
animals—goats, sheep, geese and chickens. Amazingly, we have homed all but 2 of the 15 piglets. We have
been busy bees homechecking and transporting animals to their new homes. The 2 remaining piglets, have
now become ‘wives’ to Danny the ‘Scouse pig’. Lucky him, he wasn’t impressed at first as he shares his massive
paddock with ponies and donkeys and 2 cows. Reluctantly he now shares his stable and wallow with 2 new
piggy girls. They are getting more fond of each other every day and will soon be inseparable. Sadly we lost
Rosemary the sheep, one of Carla’s originals from the Animaline days. This old girl sadly died in her sleep, but
had a great life with us. Although winter is a while away yet (we hope!!), we have been preparing fencing,
stocking up on supplies, ordering the vast quantities of hay, straw and winter feeds. We want to go into winter
as prepared as we can It was a hard one last year. Anyone who wants a trip out to us in Kent would be most
welcome. It’s so good that the 2 Sanctuaries can work so closely together and help each other.

from ‘AMY’ the Collie
to those who make

As you know our charity name has changed to

Memories
It may seem that we forget, but our hearts always remember
WILLIAM—Joined the family as troublesome 18mth old straight from the RSPCA where he was lined up for destruction.
Trustee Fran rescued him. William went on to have a wonderful family life with 4 legged & 2 legged
friends, from 7th March 09 until he passed away from prostate cancer on 3rd June 2013. Gary, Debbie
and Sophie have said “It’s such a terrible loss and we miss him massively. He was such a gentle
Bully.” SUSIE—Much loved cat for 17 years of the Ennis family and friend to canine companion Freya
who misses her very much. RINTY—A lovely, friendly mature Staffie, who found peace and comforts in
his retirement years with owner Elaine in March 2011. CHANG—Handsome 13yr old Chow Chow.
Missed very much by his owner & dedicated supporter, Mr Roy Baines. SUKI—Beautiful Akita. Missed
by all her foster carer and friends. CHARLOTTE—Such a lovely gentle Tabby cat. AMIGO—5yrs old.
So sorry we could not save you Big Boy. Your family, Cassie & friends at the Sanctuary will miss you.

PHILANTHROPIC LOCAL COMPANIES SHOW THEY HAVE BIG HEARTS
VIRGIN MEDIA We are very privileged to have had the
support of the hard working teams representing their
companies. Starting at the top, we have Virgin Media.
They worked hard on many jobs, including sorting out
our allotment, walking the dogs interacting with the
animals and the arduous job, digging out a wildlife pond and the very
large pond for our family of geese. They arranged fundraising events in
work including fancy dress and cake baking and they raised £830. We
are grateful to Virgin Media for all of this and the magnificent extra
contribution £3063.22 direct from the company. We used some of the
£830 to buy the pond liners.
VIRGIN MEDIA
BARCLAY During July the team from Barclays arrived bearing gifts not
only for the animals but also useful items that we desperately needed,
including gardening equipment, wheel barrows, picnic benches and a beautiful welcome sign that has proud of
place on our reception gate. They cleared an area in our car
park ready for our new mouse proof food container.
DIRECTLINE The team arrived in September just in time to
install the pond liner bought with funds from Virgin Media. It
was a big job and the team mucked in to get a really good
finish. Over the 3 days there were 3 teams, (sadly only room
for one photo, the others will be included on our website).
They tackled a variety of jobs including much heavy duty
weeding and cleaning and the more enjoyable work, dog
walking and stroking the cats. We are also extremely sad to
learn that this hardworking team, all 25 of them, will lose their
jobs by the end of the year. We are sure that you will agree
BARCLAYS
that this is very sad for good people to be made jobless.

Our ’Mission of Mercy’ team
FRAN, STEVE & CATHY
Our ‘Mission of Mercy’ steamed ahead due to the generosity
of the Isle Of Man Steam Packet Company. We are grateful to
them for providing free transport, and to Proctor & Gamble
who have donated large quantities of high quality cat food
(Eukanuba), approx £2000. We are overwhelmed by the kindness shown by these two philanthropic well known companies
with big hearts. Not only did they donate food for the Mann
Cat Sanctuary but also an enormous supply of cats and dog
food for us to use here for the hungry mouths we feed and a
good quantity that was sent to Happy Endings Rescue.
Extra special thanks to Paul Black at Proctor & Gamble.
