Each interpersonal relationship a person has is unique and like no other.
Elements of fiction work together to create an impact on the reader.
Eras are time periods that hold common themes and sets of values.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
Do all siblings, spouses, neighbors, etc., have the same types of relationships or can they be
different depending upon the people involved?
Which elements contribute to effective story telling?
Why are some eras viewed as being prosperous and eventful while others are not?

Monday: 1. Students will take a pre-test concerning the 4 short stories they will be responsible for
reading. This is part of the Student Learning Outcomes that is required by the district. Students
will take the pre-test to assess prior knowledge and will, at the end of the short story unit, take
the same test to assess new knowledge learned. The scores will be logged into the On-Hand
system for data usage.
2. Students will be assigned to read the short story “How Much Land Does a Man Need”? by Leo
Tolstoy. Page 1010 – 1020.
Assign: page 1021: 11-15 questions. Due on Tuesday
Tuesday: 1. Journal entry – 1. 5 minute writing in class: “What is vice? How does a person deal with a
vice? Does it have to be the person’s downfall?
2. Discussion of story “How Much Land Does a Man Need?” p. 1010-1020
3. Turn in questions from p. 1021
Assign: “The Bet” by Anton Chekhov. Page 1024 – 1029.
Questions: p, 1030 /7-12. Due for Wednesday
Wednesday: 1. 5 minute journal entry: What did you expect the lawyer to learn about himself and life

15 years after living in solitude? Did his reality surprise you? Explain your response.
2. Discussion of the story “The Bet” p. 1024-1029
3. Turn in questions for page 1030.
4. Assign: “The Jewels” by Guy de Maupassant. Page 1032 – 1039.
