6.2 Day 2: Solving Trig Equations via Factoring
(All angles are on the U.C. - no need for calculator!)
Examples: Solve the following, given 0 ≤ θ ≤ 2π.
1) 2 sin θ + 3 = 4
2) (csc θ + 2)(csc θ - √2) = 0
What happens if there is a square on one of the trig functions?
Then, treat it like algebra where you will need to factor (remember
those problems from a few chapters ago???) Then it looks like the
last problem!
Examples: Solve the following, if 0 ≤ θ ≤ 360 o.
1) cos 2 θ - 5 cos θ - 6 = 0
This looks
like...

Examples: Solve the following, if 0 ≤ θ ≤ 360 o.
2) 2 cos 4 θ = cos2 θ
Looks like...
Try on own!
3) 2 sin 2 θ + sin θ - 1 = 0
Often times, I can change the domain for these problems
(remember these problems from before?). Moreover, I can ask
for ALL solutions. (HINT: What angles also represent 45 o?)
Thus, to solve equations that ask for ALL solutions, we should
add _________ to EACH solution found within the unit circle!

EXAMPLES: Determine ALL solutions in radians (what should I
add to each solution???)
1) 2 cos 2 θ + 5 cos θ + 2 = 0
2) sin2 θ - sin θ = 0
Looks like...
