HISTORY 4 WEEKLY PLANS MAY 23RD – JUNE 3RD, 2016 TEACHER: MR. TENNEY (A two-week sheet.) The Early Dynasties of China, Part 3: The Mongols Take Over! One of the biggest worries of the Middle Kingdom was “barbarian invasion.” While the Chinese viewed themselves as the most highly developed people in the world, they were fearful of outsiders, even insecure about them. That’s one of the reasons for the construction of the Great Wall – to keep the barbarians out! But one group of outsiders proved to be unstoppable. They were the Mongols from Central Asia, led by one of the most dynamic leaders in history, Chingghis Khan. His conquest of China led to a long period of rule by the Mongols, but it was not all a nightmare for the Chinese. You see, the Mongols themselves came to love China, and Kublai Khan, grandson of Chinggis, came to be one of the most enlightened rulers of China in ancient times. Later rulers and dynasties, such as the Ming and Manchu, as we shall see, could not keep future foreign influence out of China.
