Exemption Requirements

Class Piano Exemption Test
Students must do the following satisfactorily to exempt MUAP 102, the
second semester of piano class:
I. Pass MUAP 101 with a C or complete the exemption requirements for Piano Class 101.
II. Solo literature: play one piece from each of the following two sets (or equivalent
approved by the teacher) with 90% accuracy in pitch, rhythm, fingering, pedaling,
balance, articulation, dynamics, hand position, and marks of expression. All come from
the Piano Class 102 text, Alfred’s Group Piano for Adults Book 1, Second Edition,
Lancaster and Renfrow.
Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata, mvt. 1, p. 272, or Rollin’s Prelude #1, p. 346
Schubert’s Ecossaise, p. 254 or Haydn’s German Dance, p. 335
III. Technique. Correct pitches and fingerings must be used with 90% accuracy.
Major keys of Bb, Eb, and Ab, and all minor keys:
Scales: two octaves hands apart
Cadences: I IV I V7 I, root position, hands apart
Tonic arpeggios, two octaves, root position, hands apart
Additional cadence: I vi IV ii6 I6/4 V7 I cadence beginning with right hand in first
inversion and with left hand on the tonic note as on p. 83 of the text in
the keys of C, G, D, A, F, Bb, c, a
Chromatic scale, hands together, contrary motion, as on p. 297 in the text
Alberti bass pattern (I IV I V7 I or i iv i V7 i) in left hand, keys of C, G, D, F, Bb, c, a
IV. Harmonization: Perform your choice (one piece) of Ecossaise, Concerto, or Simple
Gifts from pp. 258-259 in the Piano Class 102 text, Alfred’s Group Piano for Adults Book
1, Second Edition by Lancaster and Renfrow, using the accompaniment pattern indicated
and in the notated key. Performance must be 90% accurate with regard to pitch,
rhythm, chord structure, and accompaniment pattern
V. Sightread 2 pieces of appropriate difficulty (similar to the sight-reading examples in
the last 13 units of the Piano Class 102 text, Alfred’s Group Piano for Adults Book 2,
Second Edition by Lancaster and Renfrow) with 80% accuracy in pitch, rhythm, and
articulation. Pieces will be chosen by the teacher.
VI. Transpose an elementary level 8-bar example, chosen from pp. 225, 256, or 257 in
the text, to the key indicated. Performance must be 90% accurate with regard to pitch
and rhythm.
