Course description: Spanish 1 is a full year course aligned with the TN World Languages
academic standards, that enables students to begin to acquire proficiency and to communicate in
Spanish by developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in the target language.
Students are also offered insight into the Hispanic cultures in a global context, in preparation for
living in today’s global society.

Unit One – World languages
. Why study World languages?
. Facts about World languages
. Spanish-speaking countries
. American states and cities that have Spanish names
Unit Two – Basic topics
. Spanish alphabet. Pronunciation guide
. Borrowed words from other languages and cognates
. Greetings, good-bye, manners, exchanging personal information
. Colors, numbers, telling time
. Days, months, seasons and weather
Unit Three – Describing people and things
. Physical characteristics and personality traits
. Articles, nouns and adjectives.
. Verb “Ser” (verb to be).
. Subject pronouns.
Unit Four – Family and housing
. Talking about families and pets
. Types of houses
. Describing rooms and furniture
. Verbs “Estar” and “Tener”(verbs to be, to have)
. Possessive adjectives
. Prepositions
. Living in a city
Unit Five – School
. School supplies, subjects, schedules, clothes
. Technology vocabulary
. After- school activities. Likes and dislikes
. Verbs “Ir”, “Dar’, “Hacer” (verbs to go, to give, to do).
. Contractions “al” and “del”. Question words
. Regular –ar, –er, and –ir verbs.
Unit Six – Sports
. Talking about sports
. Team sports (USA/countries where Spanish is spoken)
. Stem-changing verbs.
Unit Seven – Culture
. Traditions and holidays in Spanish-speaking countries
Students will need to bring to class each day their Spanish binder with three dividers –
Vocabulary, Grammar and Practice activities- handouts given in class, and their own notes, to be
able to take advantage of the class.
