Science Fair Parent Letter

Dear Parents:
March 23-26, 2016
Pioneer Park Civic Center
Congratulations! Your son or daughter has been selected to participate in the Interior Alaska Science Fair,
March 23-26, 2016 at Pioneer Park Civic Center. Every year, over 400 projects are displayed at the fair,
and the community sees first hand the outstanding science exploration of kids in the Interior.
Attached to this letter you’ll find a registration form and the guidelines for projects. Please fill out the
registration form and return it to the school science fair coordinator as soon as possible. The forms
must be forwarded to us by the coordinator by Friday, Mar. 11. It is especially important to include an
email address, as we notify students by email if they will be receiving an award at the Doug Schamel
Awards Ceremony.
Projects may be set-up at the Civic Center any time between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March
23. They must be picked up by 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 26. We cannot be responsible for projects left
after 2 p.m., so please mark you calendars for pick-up.
Be sure to read through the guidelines. They outline all the requirements and give additional general
information. Two special reminders:
1. To receive a blue ribbon, experiments must be repeated 3 times.
2. Please list all resources somewhere on the display.
3. Make sure the project does not exceed 2 ft. front to back, 3 ft. side to side, and 6 ft. top to
bottom. If it does, please use pictures or make adjustments to meet the size restrictions.
Additional information is available at our web site http://www.k12northstar.org/Page/2969.
At the Interior Alaska Science Fair, students do not compete against each other; they compete against
sound science criteria. For more information about what criteria the judges use in making their decisions,
check out the judging forms on the web site. Consider making improvements to the project after your
school science fair. The school judges often have good suggestions.
One final request: we need volunteers! To run an event this size, it takes lots of helpers. Please email me
at [email protected] if you are able to volunteer an hour or two. This is a labor of love, and
most of those who pitch-in for a few hours have fun being part of all the excitement.
Thanks for all you do to help your child explore the wonders of science!
See you soon,
Sue Bishop
