Figure 36. Ocean‐related total GDP contributions in 2009 in U.S. coastal regions. (Data Source: National Ocean Economics Program.) Total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contributions, including regional multiplier effects, generated by ocean‐related industries of coastal counties within the eleven U.S. coastal regions are charted for the year 2009. Regional contributions of ocean‐related activities exceeded $190 billion in the western Gulf of Mexico, primarily due to the minerals and mining sector (oil and gas production). California experienced the second largest contribution from its ocean sector, with $115 billion that was primarily generated by its tourism, recreation, and transportation industries. The North‐Atlantic region had the third largest ocean‐sector contributions: $86 billion, largely due to tourism and recreation. Figure 37. Ocean sector total employment contributions in 2009 for U.S. coastal regions. (Data Source: National Ocean Economics Program.) This chart shows total employment contributions (including regional multiplier effects) generated in 2009 by ocean‐related industries within counties of the eleven U.S. coastal regions. Ocean‐related activities in California resulted in over 1.34 million jobs, a majority of which were in tourism and recreation industries. The western Gulf of Mexico had the second largest ocean‐related employment total with 1.07 million jobs, 70 percent of which were in the minerals and mining sectors. The North‐Atlantic region was third with nearly 0.95 million jobs, predominately in tourism and recreation.
