Dear Parents and Students, There are a number of significant events

Issue 16, 1st June 2010
Week 7 Term 2, 2010
Dear Parents and Students,
There are a number of significant events happening this week that need to be highlighted:
1)
2)
3)
La Festa della Repubblica Wednesday 2nd June
The Italian National Ball Saturday 4th June
64th Italian National Day Celebration Sunday 6th June
The “Festa della Repubblica” is the Italian national holiday celebrated on the second day of June. It commemorates the institutional
referendum of 1946 when the Italian population was called to decide what form of government (monarchy or republic) to give to the country
after the Second World War. This is one of the most important Italian national holidays which, like July 14th in France (Storming of the
Bastille) and July 4th in the USA (Independence Day), celebrates the birth of the nation. All over the world Italian embassies hold
celebrations with Heads of State of the host country. Heads of State from all over the world send congratulations to the President of the
Republic. Special official ceremonies take place in Italy.
“Pride is a personal commitment. It is an attitude which separates excellence from mediocrity.” Unknown

Principal
Festa della Repubblica
A final reminder that the school will be closed on Wednesday 2nd June to celebrate the Festa della Repubblica. Our IBS students have been
invited to sing the Australian and Italian National Anthems at the War Memorial in Hyde Park at 9:30am on Sunday 6th June. Many of our
junior students have volunteered to attend this ceremony and I look forward to showcasing this young talent. Meanwhile, our Year 5/6 and
Kindergarten students will present a special assembly on Friday 4th June at 9:15am.
ASSISA Cross Country – Thursday 3rd June
This Thursday students from Year 3-6 and some from Year 2 are attending the Cross Country Carnival at Queens Park. Wet weather is
predicted, however, the carnival is scheduled to continue. All students involved should come prepared for wet weather condition – a change
of clothes should be taken, just in case. The students have been training very hard in preparation for the event and we wish them the best of
luck.

Parents and Friends Information
Unfortunately Anthony Zamattia is stepping down from his position of P & F Treasurer. On behalf of the P & F I would personally like to
thank Anthony for all his hard work and expertise that he has brought to the position.
So if you have a passion for accounting and balancing books, the P & F needs you. A broad description of the position is found on the IBS
website. Also my contact details can be found there too. The P & F looks forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards Fiona Newham.
Students from Overseas
Two responsible and reliable young women from Rome will be in Sydney between 18th July and 10th September. They are available, helping
with Italian conversation and homework, babysitting and other jobs. They are highly competent in English and have a working visa. If
interested, please contact Nina Rubino on 0404 134 143.
IBS Jackets
If you ordered an IBS jacket, they will be ready for collection from Thursday 3rd June at the office.
School Website
A new video clip has been added to the school website about the Benefits of Bilingualism...it’s certainly worth a look and validates your
choice for a bilingual education.

Another interesting development in the study of languages from Queensland where the State Government has decided to make language
studies mandatory in Years 6, 7 and 8. Follow the link below for the full story........

From the Canteen
A big thank you to the Giarratano family ( Elissa - Kndy) for the donation of a box of oranges and a box of apples to the canteen this week.
If anyone is upgrading any kitchen equipment in the near future and has something they would like to donate, it would be greatly
appreciated. As long as it is in good working order, we are currently looking for a microwave oven, focaccia / sandwich press and sealable
plastic containers/ boxes.
IQ Puzzles (Rebuses)
It seems that many of the IQ puzzles were causing a number of parents some difficulty, so I thought we may move to an easier task of
rebuses. Again students can gain one point for each correct answer and the more points they collect the greater chance of winning a prize at
the end of the term. Give your responses to Mr Ruggeri.
