PROGRAMS FOR “PLUS 50”
RETIREES LEARNING INSTITUTE Spoon River College’s
Rushville Retir ees Lear ning Institute will take place Fr iday,
April 28th at the SRC Rushville Center beginning at 8:30am and
ending at Noon. The institute includes two educational sessions,
resource fair, and a chance for prizes.
The day will begin with opening remarks at 8:45am. Session I
will be held from 9-10am. Topics include: Storm Chasers or
Advice for the Property Owner.
Storm Chasers: Each year , appr oximately 1000 tor nadoes
touch down across the United States --nearly 10 times as many as
in the next closest country. Since the late 1950s, a growing
number of atmospheric nomads called storm chasers have
traveled the nation's heartland in search of the world's most
violent storm, the supercell, and its offspring, the tornado. Join
SRC Foundation Director Colin Davis to learn about the history
of storm chasing. You'll find out why thousands of people hit the
road each spring and what it's like to be one of them as
Colin shares some personal experiences and photos from 15 years
of chasing.
Advice for the Property Owner: Suzette Rice is Chief County
Assessment Officer for Schuyler County. She is also the
McDonough County ETSB (911) Vice Chair. She will give an
informative presentation on the homestead exemption, senior
taxes, and 911. There may be some things in this presentation
that you need to hear.
A Resource Fair will be held from 10-10:45am featuring event
sponsors. Event sponsors for this year include: Heartland
Healthcare—Macomb, Littleton United Methodist, Rushville
State Bank, Schuyler County Farm Bureau, State Farm Insurance,
and West Central Bank.
Session II will be held from 10:45-11:45am. Topics include How
Can Art Therapy Benefit You? or Yesterday’s Children.
How Can Art Therapy Benefit You?: Ar t benefits ever yone!
Anyone can be an artist! Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is
an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows
up.” Even grownups can benefit from crayons, coloring books,
and play-doh. Find out exactly how you can benefit from art,
resources available here in West Central Illinois, as well as what
materials can be used (you might already have). Kim Krukewitt
draws from a wealth of experience to lead this session.
Yesterday’s Children: Discover the lives of poor children and
orphans in the nineteenth century and how they worked alongside
adults or were abandoned to the streets. This sociological disaster
caused the breakdown of many families, and those who found
themselves unable to provide for their children brought them
to church sponsored homes or released them to orphan trains
headed west. This is the little known story of those desperate
times and those unsung heroes who saved many lives.
Brooks Carver returns to RLI this year with a follow up to last
year’s popular presentation.
The event will wrap up from 11:45am-Noon with a closing
assembly which includes a chance for door prizes.
There is a fee of only $5 to attend and pre-registration is required.
This event will be held at the Spoon River College Rushville
Center located at 706 Maple Avenue in Rushville. For more
information, call 217-322-6060.
