Do you have a water meter? There are two types of water accounts in Chicago: 1. Non-Metered Accounts • Billed every 6 months • Mostly single-family homes and 2-flats • Can volunteer for a meter at any time 2. Metered Accounts • Billed every 1 - 2 months depending on the account • Mostly multiunit, commercial, industrial, wholesale, and new construction • Have a water meter installed on the premises • Meters read either in gallons (for new Automatic Meter Reading units) or • cubic feet. If you can’t remember how often you get your bill, check the upper right hand corner of your most recent bill. Either the words “Non-Metered Account” or “Metered Account” will be in bold font. What’s the difference? Non-Metered water bills are based on a flat rate assessment of such things as your lot size and the number of water fixtures installed. Typically, a detail of the assessment is provided on the front of the bill. Metered water bills are based on the actual water usage. The number of gallons or cubic feet is listed and multiplied by the water rate. The 2010 water rate is $2.01 per 1,000 gallons (or $15.00 per 1,000 cubic feet) and is one of the lowest in the nation. The water rate charged is the same for all metered accounts, both for Chicago residents and the 48 direct suburban connections. The sewer usage charge is also listed on all water bills, regardless of metering status. The 2010 sewer charge is 86% of the water charge. Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) program Below is a picture of our new Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) unit, which includes a water meter, a register, and a transmitter. As part of our new AMR program for those customers that currently have meters, we are modifying our traditional meters with transmitters that can be read remotely. Soon, all the metered accounts will be modified to be read remotely so that Meter Readers do not have to enter your premises each month to obtain a reading. For many residential meters, the dial on the register goes around once for every 8-10 gallons of water used. This is a meter and register connected to an AMR transmitter by a thin wire. The meter and register are installed on the inside of the building. This is the cover plate for the AMR transmitter that is mounted on the outside of the building. It is approximately 5 ½ inches by 4 ½ inches. As part of our new AMR program, we have recently been mailing out cards to schedule our existing metered customers for this necessary upgrade (an example is shown in green to the left). If you have a meter and have received one of these cards or if you have a meter and would like to find out when your neighborhood is scheduled to be part of the AMR program, go to www.cityofchicago.org/ watermanagement. MeterSave program If you do not have a water meter installed at your single family home or two-flat, consider volunteering for a water meter as part of the MeterSave program. MeterSave is a new program to encourage Chicago homeowners to voluntarily install meters to monitor water usage. Meters allow single family and two-flat homeowners to pay for only the water actually used, encouraging efforts to save water and money while protecting one of our most precious natural resources. To find out more about how you can save water and save money with the MeterSave program, go to www.metersave.org. City of Chicago The Department of Water Management P.O.
