MHS Career Day
On Friday, April 8th, MHS held its annual Career Day for all 11th grade
students. Under the direction of Ms. Fahey and the Guidance Department, 11th
grade students had completed a Career Survey through their English classes in
order to place them with career presenters in an area of interest. The first two 20
minute sessions, set up at tables in the cafeteria, were assigned based on the survey results. For the third session, students were encouraged to visit a station for a
career they hadn’t even originally considered. The purpose, according to Ms.
Fahey, is “To broaden the students’ horizon of opportunities. They may end up
interested in something they hadn’t even thought of.”
The reactions from students was positive and most found the experience
rewarding. Justin Bracken stated that it was “insightful and informative,” and
that he learned a lot about the film industry. Breanna Benbow said that she
learned a lot about the demands of law school, including the fact that you can’t
really have a job while going to school
which has her rethinking her choices.
The students also filled out a follow up
survey that included suggestions such as
knowing your sessions in advance from
Alyssa Tedesco and making sessions
longer from Mateo Itri.
Many of the volunteer presenters
are from right here in our Mineola community: parents, teachers, and alumni,
including Lauren Scala who is a television reporter for NBC News.
Breanna and Weronika carry their career passports.

MINNeola Macaroni Night - Making a Difference
By Sheharbano Jafri
On March 31st, Mineola High School hosted its 5th annual “MINNeola Macaroni Making a Difference” Community Pasta Dinner to benefit the Mary Brennan INN. The Inn is the largest soup kitchen on
Long Island, and serves over 400 lunches daily to its guests.
Residents from all over the community, including senior citizens, sports teams, students and families, and faculty showed their support and generosity by attending the event held in the high school cafeteria.
All of the food, beverages and desserts served were donated and students and faculty prepared and
served the meals. Tickets to attend and eat at the dinner were $5 per person. This year the volunteers served
over 400 dinners and raised over $2,700. Every person who came to the dinner helped the cause and they
were able to help even further by helping to make sandwiches for those who go to eat at the INN. Aside
from the monetary donations, we received many donations such as canned food, clothing, and toiletries,
which were all donated to the Mary Brennan INN.
David Lee, a junior and a student volunteer at the event commented on the connections he has developed. "I really enjoyed the macaroni dinner because it was just another example of how close-knit our community is. I met with this gentleman who I met through Lunch Bunch who was working on a painting at the
time I saw him. When I saw him again I asked about his painting and he said he will bring it in next time he
sees me." Christina Genduso added, "Helping out at the pasta dinner was really great. I really enjoyed seeing everyone joining together and raising money for the INN." Mrs. Regan, who organizes and runs the
event with Ms. Burke, summed it up. "The MINNeola Macaroni Making a Difference is one of my favorite
activities each year. It brings our whole community together. Students, teachers, senior citizens, and community members all come together to help a wonderful organization."

Mineola Multi-Cultural Night By Christina Peitler
The United States is known as a melting pot, full of different ethnics, cultures and religions. Mineola is
no different. Mineola High School hosted its annual Multicultural Night on March 9th. The night was filled
with performances and a wide range of food from different countries. Everyone gathered in the cafeteria for a
buffet. People attending were asked to bring in desserts. The cafeteria was full of people socializing and enjoying the food given by various restaurants around Mineola.
After everyone ate, people made their way to the auditorium. There, people watched several multicultural dances and performances. Some that were presented were karate, Irish dancing, German dancing and the
performance ended with a large group of Portuguese dancers and accordion players. The food was excellent
and the performances were amazing. The night was a success. The world language teachers are to thank for
the night. If you didn't go this year, you should definitely come next year. The night is to recognize different
cultures in the community and to be a part of it and to share your own.
They Had Magic to Do ‐ and They Did! MHS Spring Musical Pippin a Hit On Friday March 18th and Saturday March 19th, MHS students performed the hit musical Pippin (wri en by Stephen Schwartz ‐ a Mineola High School graduate!). The Friday night show was record se ng as the Theater at Mineola had barely an open seat. The support of our high school students was especially evident as Mr. Owens had all of them stand during intermission. The two Saturday shows were equally suc‐
cessful. Jake Siegfried was spectacular and rive ng as Pippin, and he held the audience under his spell for the evening. Julie Or z was mesmerizing as the mysterious Leading Player, and her astonishing vocals le many in the audience asking, “Is she really seventeen?” Erin Talty was a shining beacon in Act 2 as Catherine, the smartly funny heroine with an angelic voice. Kris na Shevlin had everyone laughing and singing with her number “No Time at All.” Nathan Bischoff and Liam Carr had great comic ming, Bri any Hernandez sizzled as the sultry Fastrada, and 8th grader Aus n Velez got some great laughs as Theo. Anchored by Jillian Palma as Leading Dancer, the Featured Dancers brought beauty, passion, and joy to each dance number, cho‐
regraphed by MHS alum Ms. Aislinn Oliveri. The cast was rounded by a talented ensemble led by Felicia Villa (as the Magician), Jack Gorman, Kacie Rumm, Zac Sloane, Jake Lenze, and Kayla Orefice. The show was di‐
rected by the talented Mr. DeLuca. See back page for more pictures from the show. CAST of PIPPIN

SENIOR to SENIOR DAY
MHS held its annual Senior to Senior Day on March 16th. This event is sponsored by the high school
Senior class for the senior citizens of our community. The whole day is funded by the Senior class with money raised in their four years of fundraising. This year over 175 senior citizens enjoyed the festivities hosted
by the more than 50 senior volunteers.
The guests were greeted at the door and were taken to the auditorium for welcoming remarks spoken
by Aline Muller, class president, and our principal, Dr. Smith. A delicious lunch from Spagatini’s (funded by
the senior class), followed in the cafeteria, served by the student and staff volunteers. The students also provided desserts and beverages. Then it was off to the gym for a raffle, music, and dancing. The A Capella
singers and the Chamber Ensemble serenaded everyone, and then MHS alum DJ Christa Steen provided the
dance music and the students and their guests danced away! The event was capped off by a preview of the
spring musical Pippin in the auditorium. Aline Muller pointed out that this year they did something different.
The students and their guests ate together at lunch. She said, “It was amazing and exciting. They were so into
our conversations about college. And it was great to hear their views because they know so much.”
Facilitated by class advisors Ms. Honerkamp and Ms. Theodorakis, Senior to Senior Day once again
reflects the caring, generous nature of the MHS community.

The Zika Epidemic
By Difa Abdin
Ending a relatively quiet existence since the 60s, the Zika virus is once more making headlines. This
mosquito-borne disease is the cause of upwards of 4,100 birth defects in Brazil, and that number is slowly, but
steadily rising as the virus spreads across the world. Scientists are at their wit’s end searching for a vaccine to
protect against the untreatable virus.
The current Zika outbreak, centered in South America, was preceded by an epidemic in the 40s and
60s. After decades of dormancy, however, the virus returned, sweeping through the same region after governments discontinued a reduction effort involving the spraying of the debatable insecticide DDT to exterminate
the Aedes aegypti and other pests. The fear now is the outbreak spreading to the United States.
According to the World Health Organization, those afflicted by the Zika virus will usually experience
mild fever, skin rash, and conjunctivitis (pink eye). With no current vaccine against the disease, the only way
to protect oneself against the virus is by seeking protection against mosquitoes, especially in Zika’s main
stomping grounds (Africa, the Americas (primarily Central and South), and some parts of Asia and the Pacific).
While theoretically easy to guard oneself against the virus using insect spray and other such insect repellants, it isn’t always that way. There is still much to be learned about Zika, but what is suspected is that
those at a higher risk of developing long-term effects from the virus include not pregnant women, but the unborn children of such women. The virus has been linked to microcephaly, a condition that causes babies to be
born with parts of the brain and skull missing, along with the development of other birth defects. These birth
defects seem the worst aspect of the Zika virus.
In an effort to contain the disease and keep from adding to the list of 4,100 malformed Brazilian babies
and other infants across the world, top UN officials called for countries afflicted by the Zika virus to make
available sexual and reproductive health counseling to women, according to CBC News. In anticipation of additions to the current cases of Zika in the U.S., Dr. Peter J. Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical
Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine, instructed Gulf Coast municipalities to provide people with protective window screens if they don’t have them, as reported by Fox News. The window screens prevent mosquitoes from entering houses. Other containing methods are being tested in the affected areas of South America.
Just this week it was confirmed by the Center for Disease Control that the virus definitely causes microcephaly (brain damage) in infants. It can only be hoped that an end can be found to this current Zika epidemic. Read more on The Verge

Presiden al Elec on Update Clinton and Trump Win Convincingly in New York
After a heated and often
tenacious campaign in New York,
Hillary Clinton came away with a
win, moving her even closer to
sealing the Democratic nomination. The dialogue became harsh
and sometimes personal (a recent NY Times article
suggested that each candidate might be better served
by sticking to the issues of the Presidency). Donald
Trump, as expected, did well in his home state, widening his lead toward securing the Republican nomination. (See current standing below.)
Donald Trump Speaks in Bethpage Donald Trump brought his Presidential campaign to Long Island on Wednesday,
April 6th and, as expected, was met
with cheers and protestations. Nassau
police reported that there were 9,000
people inside the former Grumman
facility to hear Trump speak and approximately 200 people outside actively protesting. The police reported
that, though there passionate and
heartfelt antagonism on both sides, there was no incident of violence.
Trump’s appearance preceded the April 19th

ISIS Terrorists Attack Brussels
By Difa Abdin
On March 22, at 8 AM Central European
Time, three bombs went off in Brussels, Belgium. The
first two went off in Brussels Airport, located in
Zaventem, and the third went off in Maelbeek Metro
Station, leaving a total of 35 dead and over 300 injured, according to CNN. Grainy surveillance footage
from Brussels Airport reveals three men walking sideby-side, two in black and one in white, the former two
each wearing a single black glove. These three men
are believed to be the ones behind the attacks: ISIS
terrorists.
The third terrorist was apprehended, along
with four other suspects, on Friday, April 8th. According to the NY Times, he is believed to be the “man in

The Walking Dead: Season 6 Finale
By Edwin Melara
" eenie. Meenie. Miney. Moe..."
E
These are the words uttered by Negan, as he points to each member of Rick's
group, who are all quivering at his feet. Negan, leader of the Saviors, is using
this classic tactic to try to decide who he will brutally maim with his coiled
barbed-wired bat (AKA Lucille). In AMC's "The Walking Dead"season 6 Finale,
Rick's group seems to have finally met their match. Throughout the latter of season six, they have been frequently exposed to several of Negan's groups, one
more powerful than the last. They have only seen a glimpse of this man's power
and brutality, and are now at his mercy. For the first time in a really long time,
utter fear is shown on Rick's face. We are left off with Negan saying "...and you
are it," while pointing at his chosen victim. At this point, the audience is kept in
the dark regarding this decision. We have all the way until October to be kept waiting. Could this be last
day on earth for Rick's group?
Terminus? Governor? Heh, all child's play compared to Rick's new foe.
In response to the finale, Daniel Costa and Shawn Dudani commented, “We think the season finale left too much unanswered, such as who died by Negan, and what became of Maggie,” and that, “We're
sure Carol will survive - the main characters always do these days.” Season 7 will begin airing in October 2016.
MUSIC NEWS - by Tara Orefice
The 17 year old singer Daya received rave reviews for her April 11th performance
at the Barclay Center’s Billboard Room. Her performance was described as “pure-hearted
Taylor Swift pop crossed with Meghan Trainor R&B sass and a hint of Avril Lavigne.”
The legendary performer Paul McCartney recently performed the Beatles song “A
Hard Days Night” for the first time in 51 years. It was during his concert in Fresno, CA
where he also performed “Love Me Do” for the first time in his solo career. McCartney headlined at last summer’s Firefly Festival on his 70th birthday . Still rocking.
Kanye West and Jay Z were present at courtside on April 13th for Kobe
Bryant’s final game in the NBA, and Flea, bass guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, performed the National Anthem (considered by some to be the WORST rendition they’ve heard).
It didn’t affect Kobe as he scored 60 points in his finale. And according to Flea, “I rocked
that…”
Rihanna’s hit song “Work” (featuring Drake) stands at number 1 for the eighth
week. She has now tied The Beatles for the second most weeks with a song at number 1
(59 weeks total). She trails Mariah Carey who has the most weeks at number 1 with 79.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens
By Christina Peitler
Recent winner of the MTV Best Movie Award,
the next movie in the Star Wars trilogy was the most anticipated movie of 2015. The trailer for the movie broke
records alone. On December 18, 2015 the movie hit movie theaters across the globe. Tickets were sold out and the
theaters were packed. Not only was the movie a box office hit, bringing in billions of dollars and counting, but
set many records as well. The movie now holds the record for fastest grossing film to hit a billion (12 days),
biggest worldwide opening weekend gross (529 million), Biggest Disney international opening and much
more.
The movie also did well with critics. It scored a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, 8.4/10 on IMDb, and received praise from thousands of critics in magazines and on television.
Directed by J.J. Abrams, with a brand new cast, as well as the return of some familiar faces, the Star
Wars trilogy started its next chapter on a high point that will be hard to beat. The film was enjoyable to watch
with many battle scenes and some despair that will have you at the edge of your seat. There was humor as well
as heartfelt moments that kept the movie engaging.
If you haven't seen the movie, I strongly recommend it. If you haven't seen any of the movies, you
should before watching this one, at least the original three. Overall, the Star Wars franchise is at its highest
point and doesn't show any signs of stopping. The next movie in the trilogy will continue from where it left off
and I honestly can't wait.

White House by Esther Lee A white house stands s ll as it should, for everything, in solid colors of rippling rye and white stagnant clouds. For everything, it does not move, not one bit. And a call of a name wavers in the wind and halloos across the barren land. Someone far away watches the sound crumble and fall down along the ripple of gold— the white house; a baby's tooth on an empty sheet of gold.
