GOLDING’S TWO SPRINT RECORDS
Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club’s talented young sprinter, Zipporah Golding showed
further impressive form when she broke a pair of club sprint records in the second of this
season’s Lily B Girls League meetings at Croydon Sports Arena on Saturday, reports Tom
Pollak.
Golding, 12, stormed to victory in the under 13 girls 100m in 13 seconds to shave threehundredths of a second off her own club record set in winning the Surrey title last month. Her
time is the third fastest by a UK under 13-year-old this summer. She then completed the
sprint double winning her 200m race in 27.0 to take a fifth of a second off the previous club
record set by Amanda O’Shea in 1992, 12 years before Golding was born. Her time is the
fifth fastest by a UK girls in her age group this summer.
Zipporah – reasons to be cheerful
Another winner in the under 13 age group was Darcy O’Shea who took the high jump with a
personal best of 1.35m. Two other Hercules Wimbledon athletes to post personal bests were
Rhianna Gale and Isabelle Ellis in winning their under 17 300 and 800m races.
Also showing good form on the track was Hercules Wimbledon’s Dwayne Cowan who
shaved 15 hundredths of a second off his lifetime best and club record when he won the
British Athletics League Premier Division 400m in Manchester on Sunday in 46.02. His
previous best was set in Florida in April. His time ranks him fifth in the UK this summer and
is just 0.32 seconds outside the qualifying time for this summer’s European Championships.
Taking advantage of a strong 3.1 metres per second tailwind, Hercules Wimbledon’s Theo
Etienne posted a lifetime best 100m time of 10.35 in the Active Newham Open meeting in
East London on Sunday. He was also inside his legal best of 10.62 set at the Loughborough
International meeting last month in clocking 10.37 in his heat where he was helped by an
even stronger 4.1 metres per second tailwind.
Hercules Wimbledon runners dominated the Wimbledon Common 5km parkrun on Saturday
with six runners among the top eight finishers. Ben Toomer, completed a hat-trick of wins
this year when he headed the 440-strong field home in 16:53, eight seconds faster than his
previous best 2016 time, with Joe Toomey runner-up in 17:15. Peter Collins was top over 45
veteran finishing fourth in 17:59 just one second ahead of teenager Matt Gibbons who was
four seconds outside his lifetime best for the course. Russell Price was seventh in a personal
best of 18:24, a 40-second improvement on his debut appearance in the event last November,
while Adam Harwood was eighth in 18:42. A total of 23 Hercules Wimbledon runners took
part.
Marathon man David Grima was victorious in Wales where he made a winning debut in the
Newport parkrun in 17:29, eight seconds clear of the second runner. Second claimer Dimos
Evangelidis headed home a 1050-strong field in Bushy Park in 15:51, well clear of the second
finisher who was more than a minute behind. He also posted the top age-graded performance
for the event.
Ellen Weir, 12, one of the youngest runners in the 236-strong field, gained another victory in
the Newport women’s event on the Isle of Wight in 21:56. Thomas Beare gained a narrow
victory in the Junior 2km parkrun in Wimbledon Park on Sunday in 7:43. He won by just one
second. Valerie Parocki was top girl finisher in 8:12 ahead of Hercules Wimbledon clubmates
Albane Fery (8:23) and Selma Hegvold (9:54).
Hercules Wimbledon’s Richard McDowell completed one of the toughest races of his life in
winning The Hurt 21km Trial Race in the Surrey Hills on Saturday. McDowell, 37, smashed
the course record in reaching the finish in 1:34:29, more than two minutes ahead of his
nearest rival. “My legs are still a mess two days later,” he said at the start of the week. “The
time might not sound very fast but it was a trail and only an idiot would have attempted to
run several of the ridiculously steep climbs!”
On the road, Claire Grima broke her own club record when she finished 19th in the women’s
race in the Vitality 10km London Run in Central London in 36:14. It improved on the 37:06
record she set in the same event last year. Fastest of the 18 Hercules Wimbledon runners in
the event was Jonathan Cornish who finished 10th of more than 12000 runners in a personal
best of 31:07. It was 498 seconds faster than he managed last year.
This weekend, Hercules Wimbledon’s youngsters will be in action in the London and Surrey
schools championships at Battersea Park and Kingsmeadow, respectively. On Monday,
Hercules Wimbledon host the second of this season’s Southern Veterans League meetings at
Wimbledon Park, starting at 6.30pm.
NEWS FROM GINA REPORTING ON THE HW PARTY AT THE WORLD
DUATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THE SPANISH CITY OF AVILES
Here's a photo of the five of us yesterday – (Ed- with John Townsend ‘bombing’ the
occasion) I had just completed my race and the boys were about to head out on theirs. We
had a totally awesome few days and a real taste of GB superstardom, including an opening
ceremony which saw the people of Aviles Line the streets 10 people deep to wave and cheer
us on. Results were pretty good too:
I was 10th (8th GB lady) in my age group out of 28. Top 10 - gotta be happy with that :-)
Richard was 12th (3rd GB man) which means automatic pre-qualification for the Worlds in
Canada next year - that was despite forgetting where his bike was in the first transition and
losing a minute looking for it!!!
Charles came in a storming 13th (4th GB man) only 11 seconds after Richard
Simon Bodle was 33rd in his age group (out of 52)
ANNE FINDS SILVER IN LISBON
‘Both Peter and Ella gave a good account of themselves in the latest ETU European Age

Above was as correctly reported in last week’s Newsletter prior to being advised as to a
magnificent second place by Anne Hegvold who took time out from her regular 7upsnover
duties for European silver..

Commenting after the race Guy admitted. “Competing in the South African Comrades

There was a trip down memory lane on the occasion of the annual Lauriston Summer Part
which like the past 50 plus years has been held on the first Saturday evening in June.
The three ‘amigos’ shown below, Mike Beevor, Mike Fuller and Steve Badgery have a chat
about how they formed 50% of the 1976 ‘National’ XC team that finished second.
Both Beevor and Badgery arrived accompanied by a long-time friend of theirs, former
10,000m world record holder Dave Bedford who stole the show with his humorous prize
presentation speech in which he praised the set up at Lauriston Cottage, a venue he often
visited during his younger days.
Dave also had the honour of making the first cut into the Lauriston 50th Anniversary cake (as
below), a delicious concoction made by Jo Wackett
Among other International guests in attendance were John Bicourt, Phyllis Perkins and Fred
Bell
Just to give you a taste as to how good Mike Beevor was, take a look at this recent Facebook
posting by Mike Fuller
Back in time: One of our all-time greats Mike Beevor (on right) pictured above in the
National in 1974. Three times Mike finished in the first ten: 9th in 1971 and 1973 and 8th in
1974. Best times on the track included 1m51.9 for 800m and 13m57.6 over 5,000m.

91-YEAR-OLD SETS WORLD RECORD PROVING YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD
ATLANTA – May 25, 2016 – It was another typical Tuesday night in the spring for 91-yearold Betty Lindberg. She showed up to participate in one of Atlanta Track Club’s All Comers
Track and Field Meets on May 24. She didn’t realize she would go home with a world record.
“Hot diggity!” That was Lindberg’s initial reaction when she heard she had set a new world
record in the 800 meters for the 90+ age group. “I’m just so amazed, I can’t believe it, I was
just thinking I’d be lucky if they didn’t turn off the lights while I was finishing!
Lindberg is no stranger to Atlanta Track Club members. Her smile, short curly hair and
glasses are a familiar sight at the Club’s events – and she is somewhat of a sensation when a
picture of her is posted on social media. She’ll likely become even more popular in the
Atlanta running community after her recent performance on the Emory University track.
Lindberg finished the 800 meter Grand Prix event in 6:57.56 – a world record and a USATF
national record for the women’s 90+ division. The record is pending ratification by World
Master’s Athletics and the USATF.
The previous world record was set in 2001. Rosario Iglesias of Mexico held that record for
nearly 15 years with her 6:59.18 performance in Brisbane, Australia. Lindberg shattered the
national record of 9:26.00 that was held by Mary Kirsling since 2013. And Lindberg’s finish
time also bested the world and national indoor 800-meter record set by Mary Norckauer last
year (7:14.89).
“I was very surprised,” said Lindberg. “I had never even thought to check to see what the
record was!”
Lindberg says she registered for the 800-meter event at All Comers to earn points in Atlanta
Track Club’s Grand Prix Series which allows members to earn points for performance and
participation in events throughout the year. “I did the 200 a couple of weeks ago. I said here
comes an 800, I’ll give it a try.”
So what’s next for Lindberg? The AJC Peachtree Road Race on July 4 – her 26th. After, not
even she knows. “There’s no telling what I might be able to do! I’m going to give it a try in
the other stuff – I just don’t think I’ll do the pole vault or high jump.”

ANNUAL REGISTRATION WITH ENGLAND ATHLETICS
The annual registration starts on April 1st and costs £13. Unfortunately EA’s system does not
allow individuals to register themselves and therefore it has to be administered by the club on
your behalf. If you wish to be registered please pay via the link below. Or payment can be
made by cheque or cash using the same procedure as described on this webpage for
subscriptions.
http://www.herculeswimbledonac.org.uk/Membership-&-Renewals.html
Please note UK Athletics has announced that from 1st April it will be taking a stronger line
with respect to registration. Information for athletes is at www.englandathletics.org/athleteregistration UKA Rules apply from the Under 13 Age Group upwards.
UKA states that “The existing rule already stated that athletes “should” be registered and over
the past few years England Athletics has worked with a number of major competition
providers to carry out registration checks at point of entry and after events. The number of
unregistered athletes has been low and decreasing. There are also competition organisers who
have already been carrying out their own checks on athlete registration. Random checks will
also be carried out.”
