Point Park is newly in the NAIA Division II Top 25 as it checked in at No. 25 in Monday’s poll. The Pioneers will look to continue their school-record, 11-game win streak and also stay unbeaten in conference play. Last Meeting: Point Park smothered Wilberforce into 19-percent shooting (13 of 67) in the Jan. 7 home win. Point Park shot only 28 percent overall, but it forced 27 turnovers. Both teams shot 1 of 14 from 3-point range. The Pioneers’ Emily Schartner had 12 points to lead all scorers. Point Park had a 26-19 lead at halftime but outscored Wilberforce, 34-15, the final 20 minutes. #25 POINT PARK PIONEERS (16-4 overall, 7-0 AMC) Top Storylines: The Pioneers are riding high on an 11-game winning streak that got them a No. 25 ranking in Monday’s NAIA DII Top 25 Poll. Point Park beat then-No. 19 Daemen, 51-43, on Saturday to take over first place in the AMC at an unbeaten 7-0. It also marks the first time in program history that the Pioneers are nationally ranked. The Pioneers have not lost since Dec. 3 when a 77-67 road loss at Rio Grande put them at 5-4 overall. The Pioneers have held their opponents under 50 points in seven of the 11 games in their winning streak. Last Time Out: Knocked off No. 19 Daemen in a huge home win, 51-43. The Pioneers led, 27-21, at halftime an extended the lead to 12 points early in the second half. Joncelyn Peterkin had 14 pts and 9 rebs, April Austin had 12 pts and Kristen Veseleny added 11 pts. Key Stats: Point Park has one of the top defenses in NAIA DII. The Pioneers rank second in the nation in scoring defense (51.8 ppg), third in turnover margin (+8.2), fourth in field-goal defense (.332), seventh in steals (13.4 spg) and 10 th in blocks (4.5 bpg). Key Players: Point guard April Austin is the only double-digit scorer at 10.6 ppg and also averages 3.7 rpg, 3.7 apg and 3.0 spg. Center Joncelyn Peterkin (9.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg) is fifth in the nation with 2.5 blocks per game. Kristen Beatty (8.4 ppg), Emily Schartner (8.1 ppg) and Kristen Veseleny (5.4 ppg) are other starters. Katresa Savisky (7.4 ppg) is the top player off the bench. Chasing Wins Record: At 16-4, the Pioneers already rank among the most wins in program history. The record for wins in a season came in 1993-94 with a 19-12 record. The second-most wins came in 1983-84 at 18-8. Other high win totals are ’87-88 (16-12) and ’94-95 (16-20). Head Coach: Tony Grenek is in his first season as head coach at Point Park. He was formerly the top women’s assistant at Seton Hill the last five years. Before that, he was the men’s head coach at Butler County CC for five seasons. His career women’s record is 16-4. WILBERFORCE BULLDOGS (3-16 overall, 2-6 AMC) Top Storylines: The Bulldogs have struggled this year as in years past. Wilberforce is just 3-16 overall with two victories versus winless Fisher (0-25) and a win over non-conference Brescia. Wilberforce was just 4-27 last year and 6-22 the year before that. Wilberforce has lost six games in a row. The Bulldogs give up 82.6 ppg and score 63.0 ppg. Wilberforce’s opponents shoot 44% and they shoot 32%. Last Time Out: Lost at Roberts Wesleyan, 92-46, on Saturday (Jan. 28). The Bulldogs were just 2 of 24 (8 percent) from 3-point range, turned it over 24 times compared to four assists and were down, 45-17, at the half. Tanadra Spivey had 13 pts, and Angelica Rucker had 10. Key Players: Guard Danisha Brown leads the team at 14.1 ppg. Angelica Rucker (5.6 ppg) has started 16 of 18 games, and Diamond Wright (6.4 ppg) has started 11 of 17 games played. No other player has started more than seven games. LOOKING AHEAD: Point Park continues its road trip at Houghton Feb. 4 and at Walsh Feb. 7. The Pioneers return home Feb. 11-12 vs. Roberts Wesleyan and Fisher. The final week of the regular season includes a trip to Carlow (Feb. 14) and a road game at Daemen (Feb. 18).
