Frank Baum THE SYNOPSIS Dorothy is a young orphaned girl raised by her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em in the bleak landscape of a Kansas farm. She has a little black dog Toto, who is her sole source of happiness on the dry, gray prairies. One day the farmhouse, with Dorothy and Toto inside, is caught up in a cyclone and deposited in a field in Munchkin Country. The falling house kills the evil ruler of the Munchkins, the Wicked Witch of the East. The Good Witch of the North comes with the Munchkins to greet Dorothy and gives Dorothy the Silver Shoes (believed to have magical properties) that the Wicked Witch had been wearing when she was killed. In order to return to Kansas, the Good Witch of the North tells Dorothy that she will have to go to the "Emerald City" and ask the Wizard of Oz to help her. Before she leaves, the Good Witch of the North kisses her on the forehead, giving her magical protection from trouble. On her way down the road of yellow bricks, Dorothy frees the Scarecrow from the pole he is hanging on, restores the movements of the rusted Tin Woodman with an oil can, and encourages them and the Cowardly Lion to journey with her and Toto to the Emerald City. The Scarecrow wants to get a brain, the Tin Woodman a heart, and the Cowardly Lion, courage. All four of the travelers believe that the Wizard can solve their troubles. When the travelers arrive at the Emerald City, they are asked to wear green spectacles by the Guardian of the Gates as long as they remain in the city. The four are the first to ever successfully meet with the Wizard, who is a giant head who agrees to help each of them—but only if one of them kills the Wicked Witch of the West who rules over the western Winkie Country. The party finds many challenges on their journey together, including overcoming obstacles such as the Killer Bees, the Winkie Army, but by the power of the Golden Cap, the Wicked Witch of the West summons the Winged Monkeys to capture Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion and Toto, and to destroy the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman. This plan is successful, and the survivors are carried to the Witch. The Wicked Witch forces Dorothy to do housework for the castle, all the while scheming to steal Dorothy's magical shoes. When the Wicked Witch gains one of Dorothy's silver shoes by trickery, Dorothy in anger grabs a bucket of water and throws it on the Wicked Witch. To her shock, this causes the Witch to melt away, allowing Dorothy to recover the shoe. The Winkies rejoice at being freed of the witch's tyranny, and they help to reassemble the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman. Dorothy, after finding and learning how to use the Golden Cap, summons the Winged Monkeys to carry her and her companions back to the Emerald City. When Dorothy and her friends meet the Wizard of Oz again, he tries to put them off. Toto accidentally tips over a screen in a corner of the throne room, revealing the Wizard to be an ordinary old man who had journeyed to Oz from Omaha long ago in a hot air balloon. The travelers are greeted warmly by Glinda, and it is revealed that Dorothy had the power to go home all along. The Silver Shoes she wears can take her anywhere she wishes to go. She tearfully embraces her friends. Having bid her friends farewell one final time, Dorothy knocks her heels together three times, and wishes to return home. When she opens her eyes, Dorothy and Toto have returned to Kansas to a joyful family reunion. 3 THE WONDEFUL WIZARD OF OZ cast list AUNT EM & UNCLE HENRY - are Dorothy's aunt and uncle. They live a hardscrabble life on a farm in Kansas. DOROTHY - A young and sprightly girl, Dorothy lives with her aunt and uncle on the bleak Kansas prairie. She is energetic and delights in her dog Toto. After a whirling cyclone lands her house in Oz, she embarks on a journey to the Emerald City to ask the Wizard of Oz how to return to Kansas. Dorothy is sweet and simple and represents traditional and idealistic moral values. She lives in the present and does not trouble herself with much anxiety or worry. Throughout her journey, her goal is to return home despite the wonders and magic of Oz. TOTO – Dorothy's trustworthy and loving dog. WIZARD OF OZ – The Wizard reveals himself to be a ventriloquist and balloonist from Omaha, Nebraska, who accidentally ended up in the Land of Oz and was taken for a powerful sorcerer by its Munchkin inhabitants. He prolonged the illusion and had them build the beautiful Emerald City. Benevolent but undoubtedly a humbug, the Wizard is unmasked by Dorothy and her companions when they return to claim the promises he made them if they were successful in killing the Wicked Witch of the West. He helps the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Lion with their wishes and tries to take Dorothy back to Kansas in a hot air balloon, but it unfortunately departs without her. GLINDA THE GOOD WITCH – Glinda the Witch of the South is young and beautiful. Dorothy appeals to her to help her return to Kansas, but Glinda reveals to her the power of the silver slippers that can take her there right away. SCARECROW – Rescued by Dorothy from his dull life in a farmer's field, the Scarecrow's greatest wish is to procure brains for himself from the Wizard of Oz. Despite his perceived lack of brains, however, the Scarecrow is exceedingly intelligent and resourceful. TINMAN – Rescued by Dorothy after rusting in the forest, the Tin Woodman desires a heart from the Wizard of Oz. He used to be a real man and was in love with a Munchkin girl, but due to the Wicked Witch of the East's evil machinations he lost his limbs and eventually became a man of tin without a heart. Despite his belief that he lacked emotion, he proves himself a kind and sensitive man. LION – The cowardly Lion encounters Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodman in the forest. He claims to be a coward and wishes for the Wizard of Oz to give him courage. However, he proves himself courageous in many situations throughout the play. WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST – Powerful, bitter, and full of rage, the Witch covets Dorothy's magic slippers, recognizing their power, and tries to take them from her. She has enslaved the Winged monkeys and has the Yellow Winkie Army at her command. ENSEMBLE – Includes the Munchkins, the Emerald Citizens, the Yellow Winkie General, Winkie Soldiers, Winged Monkeys, King of the Winged Monkeys and the Dreammakers 4 WIZARD OF OZ AUDITION EXTRACTS THE WIZARD: Hello! I just popped out of the story you are about to see. I better get back inside before the Dreammakers find out I'm gone. Who are the Dreammakers? They're the ones who make the story happen. They're invisible. Not even the witches can see them. I hope you don't mind a story that has witches in it. (Dreammakers start to move) Look out! The Dreammakers are beginning to stir, and once they start making a story, there's no telling where it will end up. We all know how it begins, though. Don't we? You know what a tornado is? -- a great whirling wind that destroys everything in it's path. (Wind starts to blow) Dorothy had just fetched Toto out from under the bed when the tornado struck. The house whirled around two or three times and rose in the air. (Wind gets louder and the noise is unbearable) It was then that Dorothy, Toto, bed and everything else in the house were sucked out into the roaring wind. Higher and higher they went until they were at the very top of the tornado. (Tornado passes and it gets quieter) Hour after hour passed away, and slowly Dorothy got over wondering if she would be dashed to pieces when the bed fell again, and resolved to wait calmly and see what the future would bring. WICKED WITCH: She has the shoes, the silver shoes. The crows have come and told me so. This Dorothy must be a witch then, a little witch. How cute. How droll. How dead! this little witch will be when I am through with her. Then the shoes will be mine. Eppe, Peppe, Kakke, Kow! I must get to know her now Eppe, Peppe, Kakke, Kee! The little girl I want to see. Eppe, Peppe, Kakke, Kie! It's time to use my magic eye. (The WITCH appears to drop her eye from her head to her hand. She pulls an eye patch down over the empty socket and holds the eyeball at arms' length.) Eye of mine I understand, I can see me from my hand. Eye of mine up in the air,I can see from everywhere. Go find Dorothy, little sphere, Little moonlit eye, my dear. Witch's eye, a telescope, Robbing Dorothy of all hope. Witch's eye, all-seeing ball, Dorothy helpless, weak and small. (She throws the eye into the sky, WITCH laughs and exits.) GLINDA: Oh no, that is a great mistake. Some witches in Oz are good. And others are very wicked. Indeed, you have killed the one who dwelt in the East. Now there is but one wicked witch in all the Land of Oz -- the one who lives in the West. She is sister to the one you killed. She was so old, that she quickly dried up in the sun. That is the end of her. But the silver shoes are yours, most noble sorceress, and you shall have them to wear. Now, you must go to the City of Emeralds. Perhaps the great Wizard of Oz who lives there will help you. You must walk. You cannot lose your way for the road to Oz is paved with yellow brick, but the journey will be long and the way is sometimes dark and terrible, but I will give you my kiss, and no one will dare to injure a person who has been kissed by the Witch of the North. Goodbye, my dear. I wish you well. 5 TINMAN: (Throughout the story, the TINMAN uses the axe to illustrate the story.). But the Wicked Witch of the East didn't want her to marry me because she wanted the girl to do all her cooking and house work. When I went into the woods and began chopping, the axe slipped and cut off my left leg. It was horrible! Because a one legged man is not a very good woodchopper. But I said to myself, "Oh well. It's not me, it's just my leg." And I hopped over to a tinsmith who made me a brand new leg out of tin. But this must have angered the wicked witch because when I went to cut wood again, the axe slipped and cut off my right leg. But again I thought, "Oh well, it's not me, it's just my leg." And I had the Tinner make me a new one. So with my new legs, I returned to the forest. But the enchanted axe cut off my right arm, and then my left one. Each time I thought, "Oh well, it's not me, it's just my arm." And got a brand new one made of tin. So with my shiny new arms and legs I continued to work hard so that I might earn a fine house for the Munchkin girl. But then the enchanted axe slipped again and cut off my head. "Oh dear," I thought, "This will be the end of me." But luckily the tinsmith came along and said, "Don't worry, it's not you, it's just your head." And made the one that you see here, with eyes that work and a mouth that speaks almost as well as the old one. Well, I thought. I have beaten the wicked Witch at last because now when my axe slips, it will just bounce off my arms and legs and head. But I never realized how cruel my enemy could be. She caused the axe to slip one last time, and it passed straight into my body, cutting my heart into two pieces. At first I thought, "Oh well, it's not me, it's just my heart." And I got my friend the tinsmith to make a new one out of tin. But I was wrong. (Starts to cry) Because, without a heart, I no longer feel any love for the Munchkin girl. MUNCHKIN: Oh my goodness, oh my dear! What has happened? What is here? Ring the bell and sound the gong! Tell me what is going on. (a little Munchkin tries to explain) Step back, son. You bother me. Let a grown-up Munchkin see. Don't go near it; it's a trick. Only touch it with a stick. It's a magic bed, I bet. It's reasonable to be upset. And since no one here has seen How it got here, where it's been... Then as the Mayor here, I say That everyone should run away. (The MUNCHKINS scream and run away) SCARECROW (Attached to a pole, scaring crows away) Eeeeeaaaagh! Fly away, fly away! Get outta here, crows. Go on! Shoo! Go on, shoo! Heeeeaaaagh! Heeeeaaaagh! (The SCARECROW shakes head and lips.) Blublublublublublub. Shoo! Go away! Aw rats! I can't even scare an old crow. Go on, help yourself, crows. Eat all the corn you want for all I care. I hope you eat so much you can't even fly. I hope you eat so much you flop yourselves to pieces trying to get off the ground. You're not a crow? Oh, that's all right then. Say, do you think you could lift me down off this pole? It's easy. All I am is rags and straw. (Dorothy helps him down) Oh my, this is wonderful. Say, this walking isn't as easy as I thought it would be. Is this what they call running? (The SCARECROW goes flying off and runs into the fence) 6 LION ROOOOOOAAAAR! ROOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAR! (The LION springs on stage.) ROOOOOOAAAAR! Give me food. Lion wants food. (He sees TOTO in the basket) Mmmmmm. Lunch in a basket. (As the LION starts to bite TOTO, DOROTHY slaps him on the nose) WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh . . . . Whada ya do that for? Whada ya do that for? I didn't bite him. I only sniffed him. I'm hungry, and I thought he was your picnic lunch. (still sniffling) He is small. Now that I look at him, no one would think of biting such a little thing except a coward like me. I have always known I was a coward because whenever I meet another creature in the forest, my heart starts beating fast and I feel so scared that I begin roaring as loud as I can to make them run away. And they always do because they don't realize what a coward I aaaaaaaaaaam. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh GUARDIAN OF THE GATES And who might you be? So you've come to see the great and powerful Wizard of Oz, have you? And what makes you think he wants to see you? You can't just walk into the Emerald City like that and see the Wizard. This is a very important and famous place, filled with important and famous people. . . . . What? This is the important and famous Dorothy of Kansas who slew the Wicked Witch of the East with her magic bed. You don't say? Well, why didn't you say so. GENERAL I'm the Yellow Winkie General and I serve the Wicked Witch. I only do as I am told; I never lie or snitch. Winkies, ten hut. Underneath our marching feet, Crushing, smushing sounds so sweet. Pounded between sock and rock, Nothing can survive the shock. Massive, marching multitude, We are rough and we are rude. We will wear our fiercest frown, And tramp and stamp and tamp them down. I'm the Yellow Winkie General and I serve the Wicked Witch. I have come to tell you that I never lie or snitch. My Army will destroy you here forever once and all. And now I call my soldiers forth with this, my bugle call. 7 Audition Tips & What to Expect! Be confident and try to enjoy the audition as much as possible- remember the team will be there to help and support you, not to judge you! Arrive with plenty of time to spare so that you do not add to your nerves. Warm yourself up in advance both physically and vocally using exercises you will have used in Academy classes to help warm up the voice and body. If you are short on time, you can easily do vocal warm-ups in the car on the way there! Good preparation in advance of your audition is key to helping you feel calm and confident on the day. Giving you the best chance of showing yourself off to the best of your ability. It is advisable to learn the pieces of script if possible, again to be able to perform it fully and confidently. Arrive in comfortable clothing (no skirts as they hinder movement) that is easy to move around in for the dance audition. No jewellery please. Students with long hair should ensure they have their hair tied back. Try to enjoy the audition and use it as a fun, learning experience. Do not make the mistake of believing that you have a part before you do! Building yourself up too much can lead to disappointment. Go into the audition with an open mind, looking at it as an opportunity and new experience from which you will learn. Do not worry if something goes wrong in the audition. The audition team is there to see the potential not to see a finished, polished routine. Presentation is important. Ensure that even if you feel nervous and everything goes wrong, you smile, project your voice and try to come across as enthusiastically and confidently as possible. We will be looking for several different things in the audition, these include; enthusiasm, talent, the ability to perform and present yourself confidently to an audience, the ability to be both independent and work with others as part of a team. We will also be looking for the following skills in candidates; the ability to focus, listen, react and take direction from the directing team.
