Here at St Richard’s we are always
looking to improve our services so that
we can be confident that we are able
to meet the needs of our patients and
their families. More people are using our
services each year. More people are visiting
our Worcester site, being cared for by
our community nursing teams or being
supported through their bereavement by
our family support team.
We know that our care means such a
lot to patients and their loved ones and it
is important to us that we will always be
able to offer this help when people need
us most. We know that more of us will be
living longer and living with long term
conditions, and that hospice care needs to
adapt to meet changing needs.
Recently we have been looking in depth
at all our services and how we can ensure
that we can support everyone who may
need our help in the future. As we have
done since we were established 31 years
ago, we are committed to continually
reviewing and developing our services so
that anyone who needs specialist care can
easily access our services and that we offer
the right support at the right time.
Currently, we are looking at how we
can engage with patients earlier in their
journey, offering them a responsive and
effective service that is flexible to meet
each person’s particular needs. For example,
we are investigating the feasibility of
developing a ‘wellness centre’ to enhance
our day hospice services, and extending
our Triage phone support so that we can
respond quickly and appropriately to
patients, carers and others who call us for
help and advice. As more of us become
familiar with internet services and make
use of online facilities such as Skype, we
are investigating how we can use such
technology to help us work more efficiently
and in a way that best meets modern
lifestyles.
Over the coming months and years, we
will be developing new services and new
ways of working, alongside our patients,
communities and partners to make sure
that we continue to offer the very best
specialist care to patients with life-limiting
illnesses, helping them to put life into their
days and to support their loved ones.

Community nurses reaching more people
Family support picks up the pieces
Sheila Harrington explains how the Family Support Team helped her cope before and after the death of her husband Patrick:
In October, an international report
ranked UK as the best in the world for end
of life care and praised the quality and
availability of services provided by hospitals
and hospices.
At St Richard’s Hospice we are very
proud of the quality of our compassionate
care and we work closely with community
healthcare teams to ensure that patients
receive excellent joined up care that meets
their needs. Our aim is to help people to
stay at home if this is where they wish to be.
We are always looking to improve our
community services. Recently we have been
looking at how we can reach more people
who do not traditionally access the hospice
such as the homeless, travellers, ethnic
groups and patients with conditions such as
dementia.
Our community nursing team is also
hoping to expand to include a wider range
of skills, such as mental health specialists,
and making our specialist phone support
available for longer hours. We hope that
these changes will mean that we can offer
care to more patients and their families, and
that everyone can be cared for by the most
appropriate person at the right time.
Teen thanks hospice with head shave
Pershore youngster, Toby Vallely wanted
to do something to thank St Richard’s for
the care his step-father, Martyn Wakeling,
received during his short illness last year.
Like any teenager, Toby’s shoulder length
curls were an important part of his image
but he decided to sacrifice them in the most
public way possible - in front of his whole
school.
Toby said; “The last few months of
Martyn’s illness and death were difficult
for the family. When Martyn collapsed
on Christmas Day it was the most
terrifying moment of my life, and Mum
was hit especially hard as she nursed him
throughout his final months. But
St Richard’s Hospice made it so much easier.
It is thanks to St Richard’s Hospice that
Martyn died with the woman who loved
him most in the world and his best friend
with him, and a pair of nurses who visited
him regularly to ease his passing and help
comfort the family. Martyn’s death didn’t
leave sadness in me in the conventional
sense, but instead I just felt a responsibility,
I wanted to make it mean something more.”
Care team experience pamper treatments
Recently, hospice staff were treated to
the kind of pampering they are more used
to arranging for their patients. A team of
volunteers staged a special evening for the
care team who were treated to a make-up
demonstration and foot massage.
Here at the hospice a dedicated team of
volunteers offer patients a wide variety of
treatments from hairdressing and beauty
treatments, to osteopathy and chiropody.
Patients attending Day Hospice tell us that
these treatments are an enjoyable part of
their hospice experience and a valuable
addition to their hospice care.
Colleen Gaffney, one of the hospice’s
nurses, said:
With the shock of everything I literally
fell apart, there’s no other way of putting it.
My husband, Patrick, was diagnosed
with cancer of the oesophagus in February
2014. The first connection we had with
St Richard’s was through the hospice nurse
and she introduced us to all the other
services. It was not long after that I started
one-to-one counselling while Patrick was
still alive, which really helped us to get
through. In the May, Patrick came into the
In-patient Unit, and I came in with him; he
was here for a week and then passed away.
The Family Support Team makes it
perfectly clear that whatever you say
is confidential and that it’s totally nonjudgmental and you feel safe and secure
and that you can speak about anything.
It’s just very honest and helps you put
your life back into perspective. It’s taken
me a long while and I couldn’t have done
it without the counsellor I see. I also had a
bereavement course which was a life saver.
That sounds pretty dramatic but I was really
going under.
The staff and Family Support Team
are just so caring: it sounds cheesy but it is
unbelievable, nothing is too much trouble.
Sometimes you get on with life and for
no apparent reason you whizz back to total
despair again and through contact with
family support you realise that it’s ok and
with their help you get through it.
It is like you know there is a place and
people who understand you and the process
and the fact it is different for everybody.
This just rocked my world completely and
the family support here is like a huge safety
net. In my case I’m so grateful the support
started when Patrick was here.
I was never aware of the care that the
hospice has for the family. My perception
was the fact that if someone was at the
end of life then that was what the hospice
was there for. But it’s so much more
than that, with all the day care, looking
after the families, the children’s support,
bereavement groups, cookery groups and a
new walking group. It’s almost as though
once you’re involved with the family
support team they will say ‘we’ve got this’ it’s absolutely amazing. It’s one of the main
Nursing Times award
A joint training programme by
St Richard’s and University of Worcester
received national recognition when it was
shortlisted recently for a Nursing Times
award. The shortlisted project is centred on
helping student nurses be the best that they
can be when caring for patients and their
loved ones at the end of life. The project
involves two day tailor-made courses for up
to 20 student nurses and clinical placements
across the organisation.
Vanessa Gibson, St Richard’s Hospice
Community Nursing Services Manager said,
“We know that as specialist community
nurses we are in an ideal position to
support and influence nurses of the future
and therefore ensure more patients receive
a skilled palliative approach. We feel
honoured to be recognised in this way.”
things that’s got me through, particularly if
people haven’t got many family members
and are on their own. It’s been an absolute
life saver for me.
Solar panels
St Richard’s is now more
environmentally friendly after an array
of solar panels has been installed on the
hospice’s roof. The panels are part of a
government scheme to install renewable
energy technology. The installation, which
will provide up to 230Kw of electricity, will
help us reduce our environmental impact
and save money. Only visible from the rear
of the building, the panels will provide the
hospice with eco-friendly electricity, with
any surplus energy generated returned to
the national grid in exchange for Feed In
Tariff payments. The cost savings will mean
that more of our income will be available
to directly support patient care.
“It was such a lovely surprise!
We thoroughly enjoyed being
treated with the same level of care
and dedication – one nurse from
our In-patient Unit was treated to a
lovely foot treatment after finishing
her 12 hour shift.”

Last year 303 patients stayed for 4,429
nights on the In-patient Unit, 43%
of people staying for 1-7 days and
21% for 1-2 weeks. 25% of patients
were discharged home where they
continued to receive care and support
from our community team.

Families are welcome to visit their
loved one while they are staying in
our In-patient Unit at any time of the
day or night and we have had some
unusual visitors, including pet dogs and
horses. Our family bedroom enables
families to remain close to their loved
one overnight.

All of our services are completely free
to patients and their families. We are
able to provide compassionate care for
patients with life-limiting illnesses and
support their families thanks to the
generous support of the community
through regular giving, fundraising,
hospices lottery and donating or
buying pre-loved items in our shops.
Only 25% of our income comes from
the NHS.
Many people think that a hospice is a
place where you go to die, but in fact
the majority of our patients are cared
for at home, where we help them to
manage their symptoms and care for
them at home during their final days if
this is their wish. Last year, our Hospice
at Home team provided specialist
nursing care to 489 patients.
New
Malvern shop
Hundreds of supporters joined us when
we opened the doors of our latest shopping
experience in November. A new department
store in Malvern Link will build on the
success of the popular Malvern shop just
across the road. The newly refitted store
offers approximately double the size for
clothing and also incorporates furniture,
household, electrical and linen items. The
existing St Richard’s shop will be converted
into a specialist book shop.
The Malvern shop will be operating a
collection of donated furniture on Tuesdays,
Thursdays and Saturdays for the new shop;

Last year we dished up around 15,000
dinners, lunches and snacks. Each year
we use 57,200 tea bags, 8,760 pints
of milk and 3,000 loaves of bread. A
cookery group for carers who have
recently been bereaved offers a chance
to learn or rekindle practical cooking
skills and social support.
44,938 individuals and businesses
are registered on our supporter
database and raised £2.1million last
year to help us care. We email regular
update newsletters to keep supporters
informed about the difference their
contributions make to our patients and
families, and invite them to upcoming
events.

We offer bereavement support to

specialist care and social support to 46
bereaved children and young people
and their parent.
Our care is underpinned by a dedicated
army of over 1,000 volunteers. Last
year, volunteers donated 146,172
hours of time, equivalent to saving the
charity £1,060,988 on salaries (based
on minimum wage). During the last
year, 72 new volunteers joined our
dedicated and skilled team, working in
our shops, administrative functions and
patient services.
