Another decent entry with perhaps a fewer best sorts on offer that met a decent trade
throughout the morning. Friesian bull calves continue to be more difficult to sell but
any shaped sorts still £80+ and topping at £115.
Native Breeds continue to be wanted with heifers particularly well sold even if at less
money than a fortnight or so ago. DJ & NJ Wall topped the Continental bulls again
with a Belgian Blue at £430, a Blue heifer from F G Smith & Sons at £332. Weaned
calves sold to £458 for a Blonde steer from Thomas Gaden.

Steers Avg £724 (170p/kg), Heifers Avg £592 (163p/kg)
Good numbers again this week saw the best stronger cattle a good trade but the
middling farming cattle showing signs of the recent wet weather much harder to
place.
The stronger short term farming Continental steers met a very good trade selling
between £1150 – £1300 (180 – 220p/kg) topping at £1405 (211p/kg) & £1200
(195p/kg) for British Blue steers from M/s J Jones & Son, Down Hatherley. A grand
run of Simmental steers from Mr J Butt, Epney sold to £1340 (203p/kg) & £1325
(194p/kg). The stronger farming Continental steers traded between £950 - £1100 (185
– 200p/kg) but the lesser shaped or cattle showing signs of the weather were much
harder trading between £700 - £850 (130 – 150p/kg). The strong native breeds saw
Hereford steers to £1280 (189p/kg) & £1175 (185p/kg) from Mr D Browning,
Longney with his Aberdeen Angus steers to £1200 (187p/kg). The general run of
farming steers traded between £770 - £900 (170 – 190p/kg). The Friesian steers saw
the stronger sorts selling between £800 - £850 (135 – 150p/kg) topping at £910
(151p/kg) from Mr D Browning, Longney with the smaller farming sorts traded
between £300 - £440 (100 – 110p/kg).
The heifers saw the stronger near meat sorts trading around £1000 topping at £1100
(183p/kg) for a Limousin from M/s J Jones & Son, Down Hatherley. The stronger
Continental farming heifers traded between £800 - £950 (160 – 180p/kg) with the
general run £650 - £750 (135 – 150p/kg).
The younger cattle (14 – 18mnths) sold to a good trade with the better shaped steers
£850 - £1000 (180 – 220p/kg) topping at £1030 (180p/kg) for Charolais’ from M/s A
E Smith & Son, Hawling & heifers £760 - £940 (180 – 200p/kg) topping at £1040
(194p/kg) from Mr R Scott, Braydon.
The weaned calves met a very strong trade with a grand run of Simmental steers (7 –
8mnths) from M/s W Lane & Partners, Denchworth selling to £812 (216p/kg) & £750
(234p/kg). Limousin steers sold to £770 (256p/kg) from M/s Longbarrow Farm
Partnership, Aberdeen Angus steers sold to £822 (198p/kg) from Mr P J Davys,
Standish.

Lamb SQQ 177.9p/kg Overall Average 176.8p/kg
A short entry as in many centres with lambs not doing in the wet conditions. Cirencester
trade was back to the top of the tree with the dearest trade in the country this week and the
SQQ some 3 – 8p/kg dearer than any of the other local markets.
The export buyers lifted the price with the best handyweight lambs traded between 190 –
205p/kg topping at 215p/kg £87 for 40½kg from Mr R Cruse. The general run of
handyweight lambs traded between 170 – 180p/kg. The medium weight lambs saw the
better sorts £75 - £85 with heavier sorts in short supply topping at £90 for 45½kg from M/s
C & K King.


Another fair entry sold to a good trade & similar to last week. No exceptional ewes on offer
with the few bigger framed Suffolk & Continental ewes trading between £70 - £80 with
Mules £55 - £62. The half meated ewes traded between £55 - £65 with the leaner grazing
ewes £45 - £55. The small & very plain ewes traded between £32 - £45. The best rams sold
between £75 - £90 with the medium types £50 - £65.
692 STORE LAMBS

Overall Average £57.67
A good entry with trade continuing at very high levels and more could be sold to meet
demand. The stronger framed medium lambs traded between £64 - £66 and seem the best
buy at present. The small well bred longer term lambs traded between £55 - £63 and the
very small, lesser bred types seemed extremely dear between £45 - £58 generally.
Vendors are recommended to draw lambs and sell as stores if not feeding them.
36 BEEF CATTLE & BARREN COWS

Averages – UTM Steers 213p/kg, UTM Heifers 191p/kg Cows 100p/kg,
A few better cattle forward with the beef trade easing nationally but a good trade on all
forward. The better shaped sorts (U- & Mostly R grades) traded over 215kg topping at
233p/kg for a 625kg Bazadaise heifer from M/s P & T Akers & 229p/kg for a 630kg
Limousin from Mr H J Noad. The general cattle (Mostly O+ & O- grades) traded between
180 – 195p/kg.
The cows saw a similar trade and again dearer than most other local centres with more
buyers in attendance. No real top cows on offer with the better meated beef cows trading
between 126 – 140p/kg with mediums 105 – 110p/kg. The half meated Friesian’s traded
between 85 – 100p/kg & the plainer sorts were 70 – 85p/kg generally.

Sows to £220, Fat £140, Stores £138
Another full house of pigs on offer today at Cirencester and a complete clearance of all lots
on offer. Fewer cull sows and boars about but most present of good quality and meeting a
good trade.
Boars started the day at £205 for Abbey Home Farms, £165 for A Basson, £170 for a Duroc
Board from R Holditch. Chris and Lyndsey Morgan, Berkeley sold two super sows at £220
per head topping the trade with another good sow forward from Ben Carter at £185. Two
sows with litters of 5/6 from A R Tuck, Thornbury made £85 per head. Mediums Sows
similar to last month £140-£160.
Some first quality pork pigs on offer with 2 strong clean gilts from Abbey Home Farms to
£140 with another good sort from S Freeth at £100. Mrs D Puxley again sold first quality
pigs to £94, with D & M Whitcombe close behind at £90 with G B Doel at £86. The best
sorts all £80+ and plenty of demand for all forward. Store pigs also looked well sold in
comparison. Strong stores from Mrs J M Jones made £76-£81 with other good types
forward from D H & D R Smart at £75 with Mrs Dawson, Winchcombe making £72, plenty
mid £60’s and better. Rare Breeds also wanted with Tamworth x from Miss Meeres to £55
and £65. Slip pigs in good demand with the 6-9 week olds wanted £32 per head for Dean
Bowen with 5 good stores from Mark Little at £46, Matthew Wood, Malmesbury sold GOS
x slips at £24-£25 with small stores £21-£28 for Abbey Home Farms. J Waldron sold good
white slips to £30 and £33 with a cracking trade for 7 GOS slips (8 wks) from Mrs L Jayne
at £36 per head. Best Petriane slips from S K Farms sold well but looked a good buy at £27
per head, finally, Ray Hares sold GOS x Landrace to a good £30 per head.

A surprisingly high entry of poultry forward today was met with a strong trade.
Chickens and bantams to £26 for a Buff Orpington hen (20 weeks). Geese to £15 for
a Toulouse Gosling and a Canary and Cage reached £22.

Voyce Pullin with the help of Gloucestershire & Wiltshire Young Farmers are pleased to
welcome all Young Farmers Clubs to our Young Farmers Stock Judging Competition.
Clubs affiliated to the NFYFC are invited to make UNLIMITED entries of teams of 3
members, who must be 26 years of age or under on 1 st September 2012. Competitors will
be required to judge all 3 of the following rings of 4 stock, and to give reasons on one, (one
member of each team to give reasons on each ring). All to be judged as commercial
Fatstock.·One ring of Beef Cattle ·One ring of Prime Lambs ·One ring of Prime Pigs.
AWARDS First, second and third team prizes, Highest placed individual, Highest Placed
