The Danube is the longest river in the European Union. Innovations … … need efficient partnership! As the challenges of the future have to be solved on crossborder level, nine partner organisations from the entire Danube Region are working together on the WANDA project. The involvement of observers ensures the enhancement of the project’s quality through external feedback. The Danube River … 2,845 kilometres long, the Danube River connects 10 countries on its way from the origin in the Black Forest in Germany to the Black Sea. The river and its catchment area are an invaluable and unique ecosystem providing habitat for the most diverse fauna and flora. ... is an international waterway ... Given the historical and technical developments in the last centuries the Danube River is gaining increasing importance as an international waterway. Although inland navigation is an environmental-friendly transport mode, concepts for handling the potentially negative side-effects of an increase in passenger and cargo traffic on the Danube still have to be developed. … which has to be protected from pollution! The project „WAste management for inland Navigation on the DAnube“ (WANDA), was created in order to ensure the protection of the Danube and its ecosystem from pollution. The aim of WANDA is to find common solutions for a sustainable, environmentally sound and cross-border coordinated approach to ship waste management for cargo vessels along the Danube. © via donau, Vessels at Lock Melk From the very start, already during the project design phase, the innovative approach has been one of the basic characteristics of WANDA. The following innovations result from this approach: A comprehensive examination of different legal and technical framework conditions in the Danube riparian countries enables the development of adapted implementation concepts. Technical innovation comprises test pilot actions for ship waste management in the Upper and Lower Danube countries. Administrative innovation comprises the development of a financing model for oily and greasy ship waste. The outputs of the project activities aim at sustainable, long-term oriented and integrated results and solutions: WANDA paves the way for future large-scale and long-term ship collection services along the entire Danube stretch. The project activities contribute to the reduction of environmental risks related to (illegal) ship waste discharge. Skippers navigating on the Danube River, ship-owners and fleet operators will be provided with clear structures and procedures for coordinated ship waste disposal.
