Message from the Director of Financial Aid
Aloha,
Hawai’i Pacific University (HPU) is fortunate to have a large network of alumni,
community supporters, and friends of the university who contribute annually and
beyond, to support the scholarship of our students. As we get ready to celebrate
our 50th year as an institution, I want to encourage all students to apply for these
generous scholarships, to assist them in the pursuit of their academic goals.
Scholarships are available to both incoming and continuing HPU students, and these
scholarships may be added onto scholarships that you may have already received
based on merit or talent.
Scholarships are available across a wide range of disciplines, community
involvement, academic ability and special interests. Please take a moment to read
through this Scholarships & Awards Program application to find scholarships that
meet your qualifications and interests. Completed scholarship applications will be
reviewed by a scholarship committee, to be awarded for the 2015-2016 academic
year. Your application provides our committee a view of your academic and
extracurricular achievements; tell us everything you can about yourself.
The deadline to apply for the Scholarships & Awards Program for the 2015-2016
academic year is Friday, March 20, 2015. Completed application packets with all
letters of recommendation, and attachments must be submitted as one packet by
this deadline for consideration.

Allen and Nobuko Zecha Scholarship
Description: Awarded to incoming freshman; high school graduates.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: A high school cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.75 and scoring
in the top 10% on the SAT, ACT, or international equivalent tests; or being in the top 3% of graduating class.
Majoring in Marine Biology, Oceanography, Pre-Medical Studies, and 3-2 Engineering.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,500
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Allen and Nobuko Zecha Scholarship (Biology)
Description: Awarded to incoming freshman who are accomplished students with demonstrated leadership and
sportsmanship qualities, and intent on majoring in Biology.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: A high school cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.75 and scoring
in the top 10% on the SAT, ACT, or international equivalent tests; or being in the top 3% of graduating class.
Majoring in Biology or Marine Biology.
Scholarship Value: Up to $2,000
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring. Recipients may apply for renewal with a minimum of 24 credit hours per
academic year; completed years 1 and 2 with a minimum 3.8 GPA; and completed year 3 with a 4.0 GPA.

Allan Woodrow-TIM Scholarship
Description: Awarded to deserving students in the HPU Travel Industry Management program.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Recipient(s) must be in good academic standing.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,000

Founders' Scholarship - Helen G. Chapin, Ph.D.
Description: Awarded to incoming freshman; graduates of high schools in Hawai'i.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.50 and an 1100/24 SAT/ACT
score.
Scholarship Value: Up to $500
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Jeanne Allan Anderson Family Scholarship
Description: To encourage young people from the West Coast of Oahu to pursue higher education and work at
bettering their community.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Incoming freshman, graduated from a high school on the West Coast of
Oahu, enrolled full time in an undergraduate program at HPU.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,000
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

John Frystak Memorial Scholarship
Description: Awarded to students enrolled full time in an undergraduate program.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Minimum GPA of 2.50 and enrolled full time, involvement and dedication
in co-curricular and extracurricular activities at HPU, no restrictions on what degree program the applicant must
be in.
Scholarship Value: Up to $900
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

John H. Payne Scholarship
Description: Awarded to incoming freshman; high school senior or college transfer (maximum 31 college
credits).
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: A high school or college cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00.
Demonstrate involvement extra-curricular activities and community service. Demonstrate financial need. Must
enroll as a full-time student during the fall and spring semesters.
Scholarship Value: Up to $2,000
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Kunimitsu and Jessie S. Tamai Scholarship
Description: Awarded to incoming freshman; graduates of high schools in Hawai'i.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: A high school cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 and accepted
into the Nursing Program. Demonstrate financial need. Must enroll as a full-time student during the fall and spring
semesters
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,000
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Lloyd M. Fujie Scholarship
Description: Awarded to incoming freshman who have graduated from a public high school in Hawai'i.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.00 and a combined
SAT score (critical reading, math, and writing) of approximately 1500 or a combined ACT score of approximately
21. Applicants must also intend to pursue a major in Accounting and demonstrate leadership through
extracurricular activities, community involvement, or work experience. Preference is given to students who plan
to pursue a career in Hawai‘i. Demonstrate financial need.
Scholarship Value: Up to $2,500 per academic year
Scholarship Period: Renewable for up to three (3) years (Fall-Spring)

Paul C.T. Loo and Vi Shaw Loo Scholarship
Description: Awarded to incoming freshman
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: This scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman with at least a 3.50
GPA; or a transfer student with 24 or more transferable credit hours with a minimum 3.30 GPA; or an HPU
undergraduate student with a 3.30 GPA. Applicants who are students at HPU must submit a paragraph on what it
means to be a part of HPU with reference to involvement in student activities and opportunities offered to the
international student community. Preference will be given to students involved in extracurricular student
activities and/or community service. In the event the applicants are equally qualified, preference is given to the
student with the greater financial need.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,200
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Reverend Frank E. and Irene Butterworth Scholarship
Description: This tuition waiver scholarship is awarded to entering high school graduates or entering transfer
students who are current members of any organized religion or faith in Hawai‘i or in the Pacific Islands.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Be accepted as an entering freshman to HPU with 3.50 high school GPA or
transfer student (24 college credits) with 3.00 GPA. Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate degree,
demonstrate extracurricular involvement in his/her religious community, and be nominated by the leadership
representing his/her religious organization or congregation.
Scholarship Value: Up to $6,000 per academic year
Scholarship Period: Renewable for up to three (3) years
Special Requirements: Two (2) letters of recommendation. One should be from your minister or church affiliate.
The other can be from your high school counselor or teacher. For transfer students from a college or university it
should be a professor.
Continuing Student Scholarships

Adult Continuing Education Scholarship (ACE)
Description: HPU’s ACE scholarship is for adult students needing financial assistance who have exhausted the
more traditional avenues of support, such as the Federal Financial Aid Program.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: None
Scholarship Value: $500
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

American Carpet One Foundation Scholarship
Description: Awarded to students who are currently degree-seeking in the College of Business Administration
and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicants who are Hawaii residents; demonstrate financial need;
demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities; and in good academic standing.
Scholarship Value: Up to $2,500
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring
Special Requirements: Enclose an essay (maximum two pages) describing your educational and personal
objectives.

Ashton Hotels and Resorts Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to two undergraduate students majoring in the Travel Industry
Management (TIM) program.
Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must complete at least two semesters at HPU and also maintain a minimum
3.00 GPA. At least one recipient must be a permanent resident of Hawai'i. Preference is given to those who
demonstrate financial need. This scholarship is funded annually at the discretion of the donor.
Scholarship Value: Up to $2,000 awarded to each recipient
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Bossert Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated leadership ability and skills
through student activities, service organizations, or publications.
Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must have completed a minimum of two semesters at HPU, have a strong
academic record with a minimum 3.50 GPA, and demonstrate financial need.
Scholarship Value: Up to $700
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Brittany Pohākea Yap Scholarship
Description: Awarded to degree-seeking students within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicants who are of Native Hawaiian ancestry and have a minimum
cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00. Majoring in Education, Communication, English, Journalism, or
Humanities.
Scholarship Value: Up to $2,000
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Charles J. Pietsch Scholarship
Description: To help students achieve their educational goals.
Eligibility Requirements: Undergraduate students with junior or senior status who are enrolled full time
cumulative GPA of 3.0 and at least 59 college credits, US citizens and permanent residents of Hawaii
Scholarship Value: Up to $750
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

School of Social Work Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate who is a Senior majoring in Social Work.
Eligibility Requirements: Applicants pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work degree; who are enrolled full-time;
demonstrate financial need; 3.0 GPA with a minimum of 90 credits completed (Senior status).

Special Requirements: Students may reapply for subsequent semesters.

Conrad W. Hewitt Accounting Fund Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate who is a Junior or Senior majoring in
Accounting.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must have a 3.50 GPA. Scholarship is renewable for an
additional year provided the recipient is a Junior. Eligibility for renewal (Senior year); student must maintain a
3.50 GPA.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,000
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

David Tyner Memorial Scholarship for Diplomacy and Military Studies
Description: To assist graduate students with their tuition in pursuing an HPU MA degree in Diplomacy and
Military Studies.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Graduate student enrolled full time at HPU pursuing a Masters degree in
Diplomacy and Military studies, undergraduate studies overall 3.2 GPA, demonstrates financial need and is in
good standing with no history of code of conduct or academic dishonesty.
Scholarship Value: Up to $2,500 over 2 years
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Doo Wook and Helen Nahm Choy Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to one or more full-time students who have completed a minimum of
two semesters at HPU.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Student is active in the Christian ministry (e.g. pastor, Bible teacher,
music, minister, missionary, etc.), have a minimum 3.50 GPA, and demonstrate financial need.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,500 awarded to each recipient
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Helen D. Varner Endowment Communication Scholarship
Description: Awarded to full time undergraduate students at Junior or Senior status majoring in Corporate
Communication (BS) or Communication (BA).
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: The award is based on demonstrated leadership in HPU, community, or
professional associations, and leadership potential in the field of communications. Applicants must list three HPU
faculty as references.
Scholarship Value: To be determined annually by the University.
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Eleanor Meader Putnam Scholarship
Description: To encourage young people from the United States and Canada to excel in their studies in marine
or environmental sciences and to work at protecting and enhancing the quality of their environment.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Graduate or undergraduate student enrolled full-time in any degree
program, completed a minimum two semesters at HPU, cumulative GPA of 3.25 and demonstrates financial need.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,000
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Elizabeth Kehrer Anderson, M.D. Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to one full-time student who has completed a minimum of two
semesters at HPU.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Undergraduates who are enrolled full time, majoring in Marine Science,
Environmental Science, or related program at HPU.
Scholarship Value: Up to $16,000
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Enterprise Holdings Foundation Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled full-time.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicants major or concentration are travel industry management
(TIM), marketing, or management. Students must be U.S. citizens and have earned between 45 and 75 credit
hours. Applicants must maintain a 3.25 GPA and also demonstrate financial need. This scholarship is funded
annually at the discretion of the donor.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,000 awarded to each recipient
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

First Insurance Company Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to full-time students majoring in business administration or accounting.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must have completed a minimum of two semesters at HPU and
have a minimum 3.50 GPA.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,500
Award Period: Fall-Spring

Gertrude M.F. Moir & John T. Moir, Jr. Educational Foundations
Description: In order to assist those who have demonstrated active community service and positive work habits
to continue such service during and after their years of college.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Undergraduate students who are enrolled full time with a GPA of 2.5,
incoming freshmen accepted for matriculations with a 3.0 or higher high school GPA, students with lower
averages who have had to work to support themselves or their families.
Scholarship Value: Amount to be determined annually by University.
Award Period: Fall-Spring

Gordon T and Florence Y Furuto Endowed Fund
Description: To assist the University in by giving support for Information Technology students’ educational
goals, to give support for technology equipment and technology related capital projects.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled full time majoring in
Information Technology with a 2.5 GPA or higher, priority will be given to student workers in the Client Services
department and, in addition, to those involved with community service.
Scholarship Value: Up to $700
Award Period: Fall-Spring

Hawai’i Accounting Education Foundation Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate or graduate students with a major or concentration in
Accounting. Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must have completed a minimum of two semesters
at HPU and also have a minimum 3.50 GPA.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,200
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Hawaii Association of Broadcasters Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded assist a full-time college student with the cost of tuition for one year in
their pursuit of college study. Student must have career goal of working in the Broadcast Industry in Hawaii upon
graduation.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in any communication
degree program; Must have a career goal of working in the broadcast industry in the state of Hawaii upon
graduation; Must have completed one semester at HPU and have a minimum 3.25 GPA

Scholarship Value: Up to $3,500 awarded to each recipient
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring
Special Requirements: Applicants are required to submit a written essay between 300 and 500 words on the
topics of the scholarship.

Hessel H Flitter Scholarship
Description: The purpose of the scholarship is to provide funds for students enrolled in the Nursing program to
enable them to continue in their chosen profession.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Student enrolled as degree seeking within the Nursing program in good
academic standing.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,600
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Isaac Tan Scholarship
Description: Julian H.W. Tan establishes the annual scholarship for tuition assistance to provide opportunities to
students majoring in Travel Industry Management (TIM).
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Full-time undergraduate at the sophomore level or above or graduate TIM
major; Cumulative GPA of 3.4; Demonstrated involvement in extracurricular TIM program activities and
participation in community service activates.
Scholarship Value: Up to $500 awarded to each recipient
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

J. Watumull Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate and graduate students with a major or
concentration in business or economics.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must have completed a minimum of two semesters at HPU, be
enrolled full-time, have a minimum 3.00 GPA, and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to students of
East-Indian ancestry.
Scholarship Value: Up to $2,000 awarded to each recipient
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Keiko Glenn Scholarship
Description: Awarded to a full time undergraduate student majoring in Japanese language, history or culture,
international studies or international business.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Fulltime undergraduate student majoring in Japanese language, history,
or culture, international studies or international business
Scholarship Value: Up to $800
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Mader Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is given by Emma Jean and Charles L. Mader, Ph.D. Dr. Mader was a visiting
professor when the university was known as Hawai’i Loa College. He valued the teaching structure of small class
sizes that allowed professors to mentor many of their students.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students studying in the
marine science program. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and have a minimum 3.00 GPA.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,000

Margaret Hustace Pietsch Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund
Description: This scholarship is awarded to either a graduate or undergraduate student enrolled in any degree
program.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicant must 1) be enrolled full-time and have completed at least two
semesters at HPU; 2) be a U.S. citizen and permanent Hawaii resident; 3) demonstrate involvement in community
service outside the University; 4) maintain a 3.25 grade point average; and 5) demonstrate financial need.
Scholarship Value: Up to $4,800
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Marley Irons Memorial Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is given by Richard and Anne Palma in memory of their daughter, Marley Irons, a
former nursing student at HPU. The scholarship is awarded to students in the Nursing program. Preference is
given to those planning to work in intensive care units or in pediatrics.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must complete a minimum of 61-89 credit hours with
a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA, demonstrate financial need, have a record of community service, and an
interest in service to children and youth.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,500 awarded to each recipient
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

MerryAnn Jancovic Award in Psychology
Description: Scholarship directed at assisting psychology majors.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: This tuition waiver scholarship is being offered to HPU students who are
pursuing a degree in Psychology with a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and also
demonstrate service to others through volunteer service, internship, or equivalent community activity.
Scholarship Value: Up to $2,000
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Martin and Illie Anderson Endowed Award for Scholar Athletes
Description: To assist student athletes who demonstrate the best standards of leadership, athletic performance,
sportsmanship, and academic achievement.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: An undergraduate student athlete enrolled full time at HPU who has
completed at least two semesters at HPU and is at least into a third semester, documented evidence of a minimum
cumulative 3.5 GPA at HPU.
Scholarship Value: To be determined annually by the University.
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Nancy Ellis Award for Achievement in the Arts
Description: This find is an annual award(s) to a student(s) who has made and outstanding contribution to the arts
at HPU.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Student is involved with the performing, visual, or literary arts at HPU;
Undergraduate sophomore, junior, or senior, or graduate student; Must have demonstrated artistic achievement
and contributed time, talent, and leadership to the arts at HPU.

Pacific Islands Institute and Diana W. Lockwood Memorial Scholarship
Description: This scholarship is given in memory of University alumna Diana Lockwood who was the founder of
the Pacific Islands Institute.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: It is awarded to undergraduate or graduate students from the Pacific
regions: Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji,
French Polynesia, Guam, Kirbati, New Caledonia, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Rapa Nui, Samoa, Solomon Islands,
Tonga, and Vanuatu. The recipients are expected to return to their home country upon completion of their
studies and apply what they have learned within their communities. Preference is given to those who

demonstrate financial need.

Pakinee and Ralph Portmore Scholarship Fund
Description: Awarded to undergraduate or graduate students from Thailand, with preference to those with
greatest financial need.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Must be in good academic standing.
Scholarship Value: Up to $3,000
Scholarship Period: Offered each academic year up until 2019.

Robert Midgley Scholarship
Description: Awarded to full time or part time students in good academic standing.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Students in good academic standing who are full-time or part time,
preparing for careers of social or community service to humanity, demonstrates the great financial need.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,500
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Rowe Scholarship, Chandler and Margaret
Description: Awarded to students majoring in social science or history.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Must have academic excellence and a recommendation from a professor
within the students major of study and the Academic Dean.
Scholarship Value: Up to $900
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Smith Scholarship
Description: This scholarship will be awarded to a student from Guam or the Pacific Islands, or to a student
majoring in Asian and Pacific Studies.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must show academic promise and demonstrate financial need.
Preference will be given to students from Guam or the Pacific Islands.
Scholarship Value: Up to $6,000
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Steve Hirano Memorial Scholarship-American Resort Development Association Hawaii
Description: The ARDA Hawaii created the Steve Hirano Memorial Scholarship Award to facilitate the education
of students attending HPU, and provide an opportunity for students to pursue a career in the timeshare industry.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be enrolled full-time in the Travel Industry Management
(TIM) program with a Junior or Senior class status, and have a minimum 3.20 GPA. Preference is given to students
from Hawai'i.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,000 awarded to each recipient
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

Sukamto Foundation Scholarship
Description: Awarded to incoming freshman, undergraduate transfer students, or currently enrolled HPU
undergraduates who have graduated from a high school in Hawai'i.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00, enroll as a fulltime student during the fall and spring semesters, demonstrate financial need, and be involved in extracurricular charitable community service and/or student activities. Applicants must also intend to pursue an
undergraduate degree with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and have a major in Asian Studies,
International Relations, or International Studies with a focus on Asia.

The Terry Beaudoux Memorial Scholarship
Description: Awarded to the student who is showing the greatest tenacity and making the greatest personal
sacrifice in order to stay in HPU, while at the same time making satisfactory scholastic progress.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Applicants at the Sophomore, Junior, or Senior level are preferred.
Scholarship Value: Up to $1,000
Scholarship Period: Fall-Spring

William E. and Dawn G. Aull Award for Leadership
Description: The award will be given to an undergraduate student whose exemplary leadership has been a
significant positive influence within the University community. Through this award, the goal is to encourage
students to develop leadership qualities through involvement in University and/or community organizations.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements: Full-time, degree seeking, undergraduate student with a minimum of
three semesters at HPU, minimum 3.4 GPA and in good academic standing, to be considered for the award the
applicant is to complete a nomination packet and participate in an interview process.

The Hawai‘i Pacific University Scholarships Office is not responsible for assembling student scholarship
application packages. Students must submit complete applications, including applicable letters or recommendation
and transcripts as applicable. All other documentation outlined in the Scholarships Checklist, and any supplemental
materials, letters or requirements related to specific scholarships, are the responsibility of the applicant. Incomplete
application packages and application packages postmarked after the scholarship deadline of Friday, March 20th,
2015 may not be considered. Late applicants may be considered at the discretion of the Financial Aid and
Scholarships Office based on the need of the program, or the ability to award unused funds. The Hawaii Pacific
University Scholarships Office also reserves the right to add existing applicants for consideration for other
scholarships for which they meet the established criteria.
HPU reserves the right to cancel, reduce, or substitute an institutional scholarship. HPU scholarships that pay
institutional costs such as tuition, will be reduced in the case where a student receives other direct tuition benefits
from an outside sources, such as, but not limited to, VA tuition benefits or employer tuition payments made directly to
the institution. Tuition scholarships from all sources cannot exceed the cost of actual tuition, and must meet the terms
of the specific scholarship. In addition, the Hawaii Pacific University Scholarships Office reserves the right to add,
retract, or edit scholarship awards and listings at any time. Scholarships may be awarded based on incomplete
transcripts, but a scholarship may be removed if the applicant fails to meet the terms of the scholarship at the time of
disbursement. Scholarship recipients must maintain full time enrollment & Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) to
receive there scholarship. Future disbursements are subject to cancellation if academic or university requirements
are not met.
