A Diary Collection of Relatingto MargaretLeyden
MargaretWoodruff Leyden,of Rochester,NY, was one of the women who
registeredto vote with SusanB. Anthony on 01Nov1872.Shewas alsoone of the women
votedwith Ms. Anthony on 05Nov1872.Within the Civil War ManuscriptsArchivesin
the BinghamtonUniversityLibrariesthereis a collectionof fifty-onediaries,spanning
the thirty-nineyearsfrom 1860to 1908,which relatedirectlyto MargaretLeyden.These
diariesare in the MauriceLeydenCollection.
Twenty-fiveof the diariesbelongedto MargaretLeyden'shusband,Maurice
Leyden,a Rochester,
NY, dentist,businessman,
andpolitician.Fourof the diaries
bclongedto Margaretand MauriceLeyden'sdaughter,Blanche.BlancheLeydenalso
continucdthc lastof Maurice'sdiariesafterhe becametoo ill to do so hirnself. The
remainingtwenty-twodiariesbelongedto MargaretLeyden'smatemalaunt,Sarah
Woodruff Pottle,wife of wealthyRochesterbusinessman,
EdwardPottle.Unfbrtunately,
of the tifty-onediariesnonewere writtenby MargaretLeyden.MauriceLeyden'sdiaries
spanthe ycars l 87l - I 906. SarahPottle'sdiariesspanthe years1860-I 886.Blanche
Leyden'sdiariesspanthe years1897-1908.
Thesediariesmay proveusefulin researchinto Wornen'sRights:Maurice
Leydcndoesmentionthc 1872vote,and SusanB. Anthony'ssubsequent
trial, in his
1872and 1873diaries.And, asidefrom that,MargaretLeydenis a prominentfigurein
both her husband'sand aunt'sdiaries.Thereis, ofcourse,potentialfor otherresearch
within this collection.Althoughthe two main diaristswerenot of the samenuclear
family, thcy were closelyrelatedand the diariesmay afford a close, gendered, dual
perspective
of Rochester'supper-middleclassduringthe latterhalf of the nineteenth
century. This is especiallytrue in light of the fact that for ten of the fifteen yearsbetween
1871and 1885therearediariesfrom both MauriceLeydenand SarahPottle.
